ongonig match.
ChenQQ/ZhaoTT leading Kim/Lee 15/11. C/Z surged off to a 9-0 lead in the first game only to be caught up to 11/11 and then they got their act together and took the first game.
C/Z seems to have problem holding up their pace when they are on a good run. gets too relaxed and allow their opponent to gain advantage. and of course, the usual C/Z problem of being too defensive, seems to be happy just lifting everything.
ChenBalloon/ZhaoTT took 2nd game and the match 15/11 - 15/7.
was kinda disappointed by Kim/Lee. to my eyes, they show glimpse of the brilliance of Kim/Ra. however, KimYH isn't as powerful and deceptive as KimDM, and Lee doesn't have that killing instinct of Ra.
Ra sees an opportunity and have the ability to end the rally in a decisive manner, LeeHyoJung on the other hand, seems to be happy just putting it over the other end of the court in a relatively lazier manner and continuing the rally.
but credit must go to Chen/Zhao for the 2nd game. they boosted their effort and never slowed down. both displaying brilliant coverage at the rear/mid court and at the net.
Chen has a very clean and surgical style of badminton, unlike for example ZhangJun who is more power, Chen prefer steep sharp smashes and accurate placement. very composed and patient player.

still prefer JR/Rikke. :(
with Robertson/Emms and Zhang/Gao out, and Kim/Ra not competing, the XD field is wide open and we could potentially see a revival of the XD event for Indonesia.

I agree. They won 8 or 9 straight points. ZhaoTT killed everything. Then after she fell on her butt, I think they lost a bit of concentration. Chen especially started making a bit of errors. But it's good that they managed to get it together. I like how they communicate on talk on the court after every bad rally. And :D @ ChenBalloon!
Kim/Lee seemed sort of flat, though, especially the second game. But it was a good game. I hope someone recorded the stream.

woohoo!! haha... cqqztt used to be a totally defensive doubles pairing and they were good at it too but playing like they used to, they could never get very far in most competitions... plus they used to be very very inconsistent too... well great effort on their part!! hope this marks the begining of better times for them... haha... and now that zhang gao have lost, china will hafta bank on them for the gold... like the falling out of the old guard... haha woops ;)
hmmm yeah i'm quite shocked zhang gao lost... but i'm even more surprised mogensen olsen lost too!! i wonder wat happened!!
Wizbit 11-11-2004, 03:31 AM Maybe because Lee and Kim's attacks are not as penetrative as Kim Dm and Ra. From what I can tell, their stamina is not as good either, so maybe the Chinese are trying to tire them out, especially Lee HJ. With Kim and Ra, if either of them are not having too good a day, either one of them can hold them together (apart from that rare Olympic occasion). Not many other pairs are capable of this (maybe only Gao Ling and Zhang Jun on the same level)

actually, i think ZhaoTT made the difference in this match. she was much more proactive in the front court and was able to do more than just block the shuttle, she was able to keep the shuttle down and pressured Kim/Lee. before now, she was only scrambling in the front to protect ChenQQ, now she contribute much more to the pair.

Not many other pairs are capable of this (maybe only Gao Ling and Zhang Jun on the same level) i am not sure if it is stamina or it is just their style/personality. i don't think i have ever seen LeeHJ really go off and play all out agressively, her style tend to be more laid back. she seem to be just holding back and playing the game joyously instead of going all out and kill kill kill.
or perhaps expecting any pair to be in par with the great Kim/Ra is too much to ask for.....

sunzhi 11-11-2004, 06:43 AM in the WS, apart frm Zhang Ning, Xie XF, Zhou Mi and Gong RN also made it to the last 8... Youngster Liu Jian almost upset 4th seed Pi HY, losing closely in the rubber.

wl2172 11-11-2004, 07:25 AM I am actually quite disappointed with China open this year. Being a six star open and having no live scoring. The excel spreadsheet method is terrible, they could have at least created a decent website and updated the scores every 1 hour or so.
Anyway, anymore results? Thanks to those people who are keeping us without live telecast updated. Thank you.

very true.. sigh...
anyway, in the MS, more upsets... Olympic bronze medallist, Sony DK ws beaten in 2 sets by Li Yu.. china hs 6 out of the 8 q-final spots, leaving only Kenneth J and Taufik H.
chinese other q-finalists (apart frm Lin Dan, Chen Hong) are Bao CL, Li Yu, Chen Jing and Gong Weijie
Gade is out, beaten by chn junior Gong Weijie in straight games...
Gaaaaahhhh! :crying:
I already started thinking about a Gade vs Taufik clash...
sunzhi 11-11-2004, 07:54 AM q-finals for the WS:
Zhang Ning vs Xie XF
Pi HY vs Yao Jie
T Rasmussen vs Zhou Mi
Wang Chen vs Gong RN
hcyong 11-11-2004, 08:31 AM What are the Chinese MS players eating? In my memory, this is the only time where they have more representative in the quarters than their women counterparts.
MS Q-Final lineup:
Lin Dan v Chen Hong
Li Yu (ousted WCH and Sony) v Kenneth Jonassen
Bao Chunlai v Chen Jin (ousted Xia)
Taufik v Gong Weijie (ousted Gade)
Only a few years after Lin Dan and Bao started making an impact on the scene, their immediate juniors are already breaking rank. No other countries have such a high turnover rate.
taneepak 11-11-2004, 08:48 AM Maybe these new Chinese youngsters are the product of China's new revolutionary training method, where all round skills take precedence over power and aggression.
Fook90 11-11-2004, 09:03 AM Maybe these new Chinese youngsters are the product of China's new revolutionary training method, where all round skills take precedence over power and aggression.
But this is amazing, there are six Chinese players in the quarter-finals. Peter Gade, Taufik, Agus Hariyanto and Sony could even lose to the junior players. Thinking of it, Chinese players aren't given the stage for them to perform.
hcyong 11-11-2004, 09:41 AM MD Q-Final lineup:
1. Jens Eriksen/Martin Lungaard v Chan Chong Ming/Koo Kien Kit
2. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Jae Jin (ousted Fu/Cai) v Candra/Sigit
3. Fairuzizuan/Lin Woon Fui (lucky draw but good job anyway) v Sang Yang/Zheng Bo
4. Choong Tan Fook/Chew Choon Eng v Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen
Match no 4 would be the match of to watch out for.
Also interesting to see the new partnership of Chan/Koo.
hcyong 11-11-2004, 09:51 AM WD Q-Final lineup:
Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen v Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung
Zhang Dan/Zhang Yawen v Du Jing/Yu Yang
Saralee T./Sathinee C. v Wei Yili/Zhao Tingting
Rikke Olsen/Mette S. v Gao Ling/Huang Sui
An all-Chinese semi-fnal? Would that be the first? In the past, even if the Chinese dominate this event, there would be someone like Ra/Lee to get a semifinal spot.

Li Yu didn't really beaten Wong Choong Hann, WCH is having a flu n he gave up in the 3rd set. Some kind of walkover i think...He won the 1st set but I think he's too sick to continue. The match lasts for 40min n I think WCH gave a good fight! Not meaning Li Yu is not good, just clarifying(on behalf of WCH, although i'm not asked to do so...) It's very pityful to be sick at this time. By the way, there are lot's of surprises in this China Open, juz can't imagine how XXZ is beaten in straight game. All Chinese in the last 8 except for Taufik n Jonassen, I wonder how the coach manage to produce so many good players in a time...

Ya, too bad Tan Bin Shen & Ong Soon Hock are beaten by Chan/Koo, they're gd. I've seen all the 3 double teams playing in the local tournament lately, they're very gd. Chan/Koo won all the local titles in last August n September, beating Tan/Ong in the finals. The scratch pair (Choong/Chew) did surprisingly well. They paired up because of Lee Wan Wah's injury. He has to rest for 6 months.

They are not as scratch as you may think. At least Chan/Koo should remain a permanent partnership. If only Chan is as good as he once was.

with XXZ and Peter G eliminated by junior champs, and i dont want to start a debate here, i have said it before, 'speed' (well, i mean speed that could last 3 games so stamina go with speed) is the dominating skill to have in singles ;) :p

redkingjoe 11-11-2004, 11:51 PM Cooler,
I totally agree with you on the "speed" "skills""staminas" triangle. In a Badminton court, my role is an observer. I told all the young players in my club that if they want to be good in Badminton, the first most important thing to do is train on speed+endurance.
Skill is "only" the foundation. Without "skill", don't need to talk about others. Skills without speed+endurance=coach. Dxxned right!

Cooler, I think you know my opinion - in development phase, skills are most important, then after knowing how to perform 'properly', then comes speed and power. In a competition, determination will be the key.
XXZ as you seen in other threads, I see him as a very good player, great speed and power. A fighter that never gives up in the court. Skills wise won't say he is among the best technically. Have a look at the game between him and Hendrawan. Hendrawan is apparently physically weaker, 'slower', less powerful and yet dominated and won the match(es).
GWJ on the other hand is a highly skilled player. Is he fast? Surely, but probably not as fast as Peter Gade. GWJ have a very good attacking clear - well disguised and well placed. Moves the opponent well and finish with a clinically precise cross court smash. In my opinion, and based on the World Junior MS final, he should be the player to watch, probably will rise higher than Chen Jin. At this level, skills, intelligence, determination, speed, power are EQUALLY important.
a3olus 11-12-2004, 01:47 AM Hi all...I'm pretty new here..jus registered today:D ...but I see you've got an interesting discussion going on.
