Round 1
The 5-star Singapore Open was most unfortunate to see a number of last-minute withdrawals of some of the big names in badminton. It was bad enough when Lin Dan and Sony Kuncoro and some of the Korean big guns did not participate, neither did local hero, Ronald Susilso and Li Li. But when Taufik Hidayat, Gong Ruina and Roslin Hashim, pulled out at the eleventh hour, the tournament could not afford to lose any more of the big names.
So, it was a happy day for the Singapore Open when all but one of the big names failed to move to Round 2. The following are the results of the selected matches:

Hendri, Li steal show
Singapore unseeded mixed doubles team scalp World No 2 Chinese pair
By Gary Lim
HE was sacked by the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) earlier this year for being unfit.
Last month, Hendri Kurniawan Supatra, 23, and his brother Hendra Wijaya, 19, were given a second chance to prove their worth.
Yesterday, the Indonesia-born Hendri repaid the SBA's faith when he partnered Li Yujia to score the biggest upset in the opening round of the Aviva Open Singapore 2004.
The unseeded mixed doubles pair (above) played the match of their lives to defeat China's world No 2 Zhao Tingting and Chen Qiqiu 15-9, 7-15, 17-16 in an energy-sapping battle that lasted 69 minutes.
They will take on the English pairing of Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg in the second round.
Said Li: "We were under no pressure because our opponents were stronger and more experienced. We were thinking of learning from them.
"The win was unexpected, but we are not overconfident. We will take one match at a time."
The action on Court Four at the Singapore Indoor Stadium was as tight as the scoreline suggested.
The controversy off the court added spice to the match.
At 16-16 in the rubber set, Hendri went for the kill with a forehand smash.
The shuttle cock appeared to skim the line, and the line judge ruled it in, much to the chagrin of the Chinese players.
They promptly protested to the umpire, but he upheld the line judge's decision.
The incensed Chinese players and officials stormed off the court, and declined to comment after the match.
SBA technical director Zheng Qingjin preferred to downplay the incident.
He said: "I was sitting in the stands, so I didn't have a good view of where that shot landed. It certainly looked like it was very close.
"I don't want to discuss the call, but these things happen in badminton all the time."
Zheng was more keen to praise the duo's spirit against their world-class opponents.
He said: "Hendri just resumed his pairing with Li a few weeks after returning from Indonesia, so the performance was really heartening.
"What impressed me most was the fact that they never gave up, despite trailing 7-13 in the final set.
"In matches like these, the mental strength of the players will determine the result and I'm really happy that they fought till the end to earn their win."
SBA executive director Jacqueline Lim was also delighted with the win.
She said: "The boys realised that they lost a golden opportunity when they were sent back.
"They have come to terms with that and they told us they want to come back to play badminton.
"They will be on probation and have until February to pass their fitness tests.
"But Hendri and Li played an exceptionally good match today, and we are pleasantly surprised."
It also helped that Hendri and Li, 21, have played together before. So it did not take much time for the pair to gel.
Last year in September, they won the mixed doubles title at the Singapore Pools Asian Satellite tournament. One month later, they helped themselves to the India Satellite 2003 title.
If they can maintain their form, this won't be the last that one will hear of them.

it's certainly a little upsetting that chen/zhao lost. but reconsidering it, it's not THAT shocking. i've noticed that this pair can become complacent when they are playing a little ahead of their opponents. i think that is something they need to be on guard against in the future.

It kinda reminds me of the 2004 Thomas Cup where Flandi Limpele - Eng Hian defeated Koo Kien Keat and his another partner in a very, very close match, and it was the moment when KKK became quite "famous".
This time, with the victory on the Malaysia's side, I guess KKK must be real pleased because he has taken revenge on them :D

Another Malaysian pair made it to last 8 - Lin/Fairuzizuan who sent Cai/Fu packing in the opening round.
However, the other younger pair of Tan/Ong lost to their Korean junior peer in rubber set. Pretty close in the third set 17-16.
Looks like the Malaysian younger players are finally making their mark. It is about time as the seniors are gettting too old.

That seems to be a problem with the Malaysian players. They can perform well at small to medium level tournament but when it comes to the big ones - the olympic games and world championships, nothing.
Not to be-little their acheivment in the Singapore/China opens but winning/doing well in these tournaments mearly serve to raise expectation of more to come in the important tournaments.
In the past 10 years only Wong Choong Han and Cheah Soon Kit/Yap Kim Hock have reached a final of something big. That's a poor record for a nation that considers itself a giant in world badminton.
Still having said that I am glad to see that the Malaysians doubles are doing well and I wish them all the best in this tournament.

Hi Guys
Are you happy with the LIVE SCOREs and other internet info provided by the Aviva Open Singapore?
I'm sure you're relieved as I am to be able to following the proceedings live and keep track of your favourite player and team. Remember we had some problems with the China Open but since Singapore is basically an English-speaking nation, much of the language obstacles are non-existent.
As with all things, improvement can be made and if you can think of some suggestions, do make them here so that I can relay them back to Aviva.
For our overseas friend, do continue to enjoy the coverage. Tomorrow morning, quite a number of us will converge first at the Bedok Sports Hall for badminton Fun Games. Incidentally, the 2 courts we had were all sponsored by the S'pore Sports Council. We only need to bring ourselves and our badminton gear, plus shuttles. Wished you are with us! :)

hey Loh,
pretty much satisfied with the live scoreboard. except that the page failed to refresh a couple of times in the middle of the day, and pressing F5 didn't help. otherwise, very neatly presented. might i suggest that each completed match be placed right at the top of the list; and not slotted randomly between other completed matches that were played awhile ago.
hope i'm not being too fussy :)
The live score provided by the Aviva Open is good. Well i hope all of you guys enjoy yourself at the FUN GAMES! :)

your statement is a contradicting one. if zhou mi lost weight, how can she be like mia? :D

by saying that he hopes zhou mi would never be physically challenged like mia, i don't see how Feng is 'valuing' mia.?
