nice pics Loh.........thanx
more please!!!!!!!!
Just had a quick lunch with Chan, our BFer from Brisbane, at a food court near my office at Raffles Place. We had beef noodle. ;)
Before I depart to the SIS to meet up with Kwun, who touched down at 1 pm, and the other BFers, I thought I should include some action pics of the players.
Nice pics.. more of it. :) Hows the attendance so far this year for Spore Open?

Thanks for the nice photos, hdson. Is the 2nd photo showing the match between Kenneth Jonassen and Ng Wei? If so, that was fast posting as this match finished only about 2 hours ago.
Ng Wei did his best but was clearly a spent force after two marathon matches (lasting a total of more than 3 hours) yesterday with Wiempie and Sato.

Yeah, just come home and "pushed" all pictures to the computer. Missed most QF matches :(, but at least I can confirm that photography inside SIS is tolerable :D

Nice stadium. Wished the World Junior were hosted at the Pacific Coliseum or better GM Place. Latter would be a bit much ($ wise).
Man, the Minoru now feels like a rat hole.

From what I read from SISTIC, cameras are not allowed inside the stadium. How did you manage to bring your camera in? Did anyone check at the gate?
Thx

yeah. i have a D70. it was well worth the money i spent on it. i took nearly 1400 pictures. i spent one whole 1Gig card in the KJ vs. LCW match alone. i just wish i have another one so i can take even more. it takes nearly 15-20mins to download them into my laptop.

i am still scaning through my pictures. here are a few which i think are interesting. aside from the action, i think capturing the emotion of players are also quite interesting.
Martin Lungaard Hansen looked nervous even before the match.

here are some more action ones. they are from earlier matches.
catching the right moment in the action was very difficult to do, i say 4 out of 5 shots are wrong timing and among the ones that are good, only some of them are worthy...
luckily, digital photos are free until storage space runs out.

thanks Dave. only a handful of good one out of 1400. :crying:
i have a few lenses for my previous camera. a 50/1.8, 24/2.8 and a 70-210/3.5-4.5. i also have a manual focus 24-85/3.5-4.5.
even so, i did get the kit lens as it covers a nice focal range and it was quite cheap for the quality and convenience. furthermore, anyone can use that lens in "auto" mode and effectively turning the camera into a very high quality P&S for the mom and wife... :)

Time to post more pics after the event. It had been a tiring week made worse by the lack of sleep for most nights. Managed to catch more hours during Sat & Sun, the non-working days, to compensate for the previous days' shortfalls.
I always like to visit the SIS (S'pore Indoor Stadium) at Kallang. Although built many years ago, it has always been the best venue for badminton since the Konica Cup days, followed by Yonex-Sunrise sponsorship for the Singapore Open for a number of years and now Aviva.
The SIS is one of the most modern and unique buildings in Singapore during its time. The adjacent National Stadium, which sits 55.000 spectators, and is a major venue for important events like the National Day Celebrations, pales in comparison. With its spectacular 'silver' diamond-shaped roof, the SIS nestles majestically in sea of calm and greenery provided by the Kallang River and surrounded here and there by the high-end private condos on the other side of the river.
The inside is just as spectacular as you can see in my earlier pictures. Seats are in abundance and certainly more than what a badminton tournament can hope to fill. They are relatively comfortable and I believe, recently upholstered with a change in colour from blue to purple now. The facilities are good - the sound system, the air-conditioning, the special lighting, the thick dark curtains to block out both unwanted drafts and glare, the large central overhead TV screens and the recent introduction of big side screens at opposite ends specially to project the results and information of the ongoing badminton matches being played on the various courts. It is most enjoyable if you bring alongyour sweater as the air-conditioning may prove a bit too cold for the locals. :p
Changes are happening at Kallang. Originally the site of only the imposing National Stadium (NS), the SIS has taken prominence and overshadowed its erstwhile bigger brother. But the SIS may find a new challenger in that the NS is about to be pulled down soon and a brand new open-air stadium like the present one, hopefully with a more modern design, with and addition of an adjacent indoor stadium, will take its right of place. The new Kallang, well known as a venue for sports and recreation, will soon be transformed (in about two years) as a favourite meeting place for the young and old, more popular than previously as the new Circle Line (MRT) will make it much more easier for one and all to converge there. This place could be more popular than the Esplanade, as the Kallang River will once again be alive with sea sports and related activities.
This is the constant changing face of Singapore. :D

Guys,
My camera was just a humble novice camera Olympus D-540 (C31 in some countries). My friend was right, sport photography is one of the most tiring one, esp for fast sports like badminton.
I used the burst mode and out of 10 pics taken perhaps only 1 (if lucky) isn't blur.
Anyway, I haven't had the chance to upload all, but there r almost 50 now there.
Nice pics Kwun and Loh!!

Simply admirable. I have great respect for that dude, reminds me of Malaysian own Foo Kok Keong of all, will fight and defend each shot like their lives depended on it.

i know that perfectly well by now ;). just thought maybe you had a reason for the infatuation :)
OK, happy days we once had as teenagers ourselves.
Unfortunately during our time we didn't have badminton events like the SO, so sophisticated and well-organized, and where you can enjoy the handsome and pretty faces of the players in cool comfort, although the actions on the courts were boiling hot! And there were no internet to link up to BFers like you and share in discussing the proceedings.
But despite not having all these modern facilities, we still enjoyed playing backyard badminton in the open, catching fighting spiders in the dense vegetation or the colourful guppies in monsoon drains, climbing up rambutan trees and fighting the red hot ants in order to taste the fruits of our labour, braving the currents to enjoy a cool dip in the refreshing sea, etc, etc. :D

When I took the pics of the more popular stars at the players and officials area, I thought I saw a familiar face with the handphone to her ear.
She may be Tang Jiuhong, the 1989 World Grand Prix and 1991 World women's singles champion, just ahead of Susi Susanti! :)
The Zhou Mi stretching exercises pics were most unexpected as she was warming-up for her final match against the great champion, Zhang Ning (?). I was sitting not too far away and although the railings were blocking my view, I took the chance for such a golden opportunity. Zhou was doing her routine for quite a while, emphazising on her lower limbs, especially her legs whilst at the same time watching the match being played on court. You would think she was doing yoga at that time as she bent her legs in the most relaxed manner!

Yes, Mag mentioned this.
We're happy in Singapore to have played a role in publicising BC. It is unfortunate that may of the BF'ers who particpated at the BC Fun Games in Bedok could not stay behind at the end of the Singapore Open to be included in this historic picture. But the ones we took at Bedok Sports Hall will long be remembered as one of our finer moments with BC.com! :)

there are quite a few (1000+) so it wasn't practical to post them here in the forum, i had to install a new gallery program to host them instead.
the pics are unfiltered and unsorted pics i took. the quality improves slightly as you go to the latter images as i figured out the correct settings and as i learn more about how to take pictures. so my apologies for the poor photography skills...
