IBF has already started their campaign on changing the scoring sytem from 3x15 to 5x7. they are in the experimental stage by having all the IBF events to be 5x7, and next year, they will vote again to make it permanent.

having read quite a few comments in this forum, i noticed that there are quite a lot of people who are against this new format. and yet, there are people who thinks the new format change will benefit badminton as a whole.

with the risk of bringing this topic up again and redundant postings and all that, i would like to ask everyone to voice their opinion in the new format change.

do you think it is bad for badminton? do you think this is good? do you think it will draw more audience? and why would that be? do you think IBF is kissing up to the tv stations and run the risk of destroying the game that we all love so much?

a year will pass away very soon. next year this time, the IBF panel will vote on the scoring change. if we don't voice our opinion soon, it will be too late.

so please, say what the IBF should do. whether the scoring change is the correct thing to do, or are there other things they should be doing instead.

kissing up to tv stations? more like bending over
i could maybe live with 9x5 as a temporary compromise but 7x5 is too drastic of a change, format and number of total points played were changed at once.

Cooler is right in my opinion...
They gotta meet somewhere in the middle.
5x7? give me a break, it'll be like culture shock when the newer younger players realize that there is such thing as 15X3!
However, for the benefit of the sport to become more popular, I hope for the sake of the IBF, that this is not a bad decision, and I'm hoping it pays off, because Lord knows we need all the support we can get for the sport in North America!
good luck IBF.

I'd prefer 5x9 to 3x15. Five 'sets' are better than three and 9 points in a racquet game seems better than scoring all the way up to 15. Besides, I think it will make a better spectator sport.

I've played 3x15, 5x9 and 5x7 formats. My least favorite is the 5x7.

Not only will the new rules affect to fun of the game. it will also change, who beats who more often if you get what i mean.

For example, players like Gade will benefit as he is more of an aggressive smasher, and in the 5x7 rule, there is less time on court so he can afford to use more energy to smash more. Players like Hendrawan will not benefit as he players more tacfully, moving his opponent around the court forcing the errors before going for the kill.

Annoying, very........

5X7 is too quick. Takes away the the part of the game I love so much. I love having the time to out-think your opponent. Play a tactiful game.
Also there's the dramatic come back from 2-13, or 0-10 to win.

5X9 I can live with. Enuf to make it exciting and enuf time to play "your" type of game.

Just out of curiousity....where did they come up with 5X7???
I'm wondering if they conducted a poll with players cause from what I've been reading, they aren't listening to us.

how about 5x9 for the men & 5x7 for the ladies? The total no. of points remains status quo.

5x9 would be much less of a transition for women, except for the two extra sets possible in a match. Another advantage is the number of points played is the same as 3x15. I think stroke players like Hendrawan will have a better chance in a 5x9 format than in 5x7. On the other hand, maybe it won't make much difference. One former international player told me the stroke player would probably lose the first set in 5x7 but would come back to win the second.

The problem is, we haven't seen enough 5x7 tournaments to tell what would happen. Are Chen Hong, Xia Xuanze, Hendrawan, Pulella Gopichand having more trouble adjusting to 5x7, or did each of them meet an opponent who was having a better tournament, or who adjusted better to the drift in the stadium? By the end of the season we will know how much to blame 5x7.

I'm sorry to say this, but IMHO 5x7 will be better for tv than 3x15 because most tv is aimed at ppl with short attention spans. If 5x7 works for tv, then look for the next change to be longer breaks between sets (more time for adverts).

I don't think they do, now that women train to such high levels. The 11-pt singles game probably was set up in the era when the rulemakers thought women athletes were too frail and delicate to play a 15-pt game.

So now do we conclude that the IBF thinks all players, men and women, are too frail and delicate to play more than 7 points without a break? :-P
