England lose but take the series
GAIL EMMS (Herts) returned from injury to secure two wins but it wasn't enough to save England from a 3-2 defeat by Germany in the final Carlton Hi-Tec badminton clash of the week at The Parks in North Shields tonight.
The Olympic silver medallist won the mixed doubles with Athens partner Nathan Robertson (Notts) and also took the women's doubles with Donna Kellogg (Derebyshire), another Olympic squad member.
But for the fifth match in a row England lost both singles, Julia Mann (Warks) returning from injury only to lose to unbeaten Xu Huaiwen 11-0 11-0 while Nick Kidd (Avon) took a game off Jens Roch but couldn't quite fathom the left-hander.
The whole series has hinged on doubles matches and Germany came out on top on the night when Ingo Kindervater and Kristof Hopp had just too much nous for debut boys Paul Trueman (Yorkshire) and Ian Palethorpe (Lancs). Their win gave Germany a 3-2 triumph although England took the series 3-2 where, for the fifth consecutive night, the final match had decided the outcome.
Like Wigan last night, the Parks was a sellout with well over 500 fans attending a match which once again showed what a popular touring squad Asger Madsen's German side has been.
We wish him well with his new career in Sweden from January and we wish the Germans a speedy return to England. They have proved themselves great ambassadors for their sport and their team and helped maintain this autumn tour as a fundamental part of the English badminton season.
And as a footnote, Marc Zwiebler, who played in the early part of the tour, is through to the men's singles final at the Scottish International Championships in Glasgow tomorrow - while England's Jill Pittard is in the women's singles final against Scotland's Yuan Wemyss.
