Taufik is the reigning Olympic gold medalist. Lin Dan tripped in the Olympics first round and never got the gold medal that he thinks he deserves.

and Lin Dan being the world number 1, has only lost 3 matches and won 5 championships this year, and that's not including a stellar performance in the TC.

Taufik has emerged from a long fight with the PBSI and took the Olympics gold by surprise.

the amazing thing is that these two have only met once in 2001. then Lin was only a emerging player and Taufik was in a bad fiasco with his national organization.

Hehe, i'm also following the semi-live report by Sandy-thx Sandy for the report, still staying awake...I bet there must be people screaming in the back while you're typing this heh Sandy?!?!..:).

Yah, i wasn't really surprised at the result...Along with the reasons I gave why Taufik will win against Lin Dan, I believe the match could go either way, but IMO the fact that Taufik is playing in his backyard was the difference, esp. with all his supporters is something else(maybe it could be different if the match was played in China)..The MS final should be interesting though, as this will be Chen Hong's 3rd consecutive final appearance in IO..Will 3rd time's the charm for him??Or will Taufik dominate and once again prove that he is still the 'man' in Indonesian Open??..

As a consolation, Lin Dan should meet with Taufik again in a couple of weeks for the Copenhagen Masters-if so, it should be another interesting match...Hope we can see the same type of exciting and fun match...:).

Anyhoo, future-term plan, I can't wait to meet and see both of them play *LIVE* in the World Championships next year in Los Angeles, should be one heck of a treat!!:)

I've made some quick calculations on the XD rankings.

Koo/Wong will be the first XD pair from Malaysia to make it to top 20 next week with 1341 point (world no 20, after just 4 tournaments together).
Should have no problem to qualify for WC next year.

I agree with you. In fact, the English pair is in the top 10 just because they have played more than 10 tournaments together. Their best achievement prior to Indonesian Open was last 8 in Singapore. Looking at the 2 pairs' achievement, most people will conclude that the Malaysians are the better pair. Well, perhap's KKK is really feeling the tiredness of playing 4 tournaments in a row (see below URL).

I watched the match between Saputra/Li and Blair/Munt in Singapore where Saputra/Li just managed to win. My impression is that Blair/Munt is no easy meat.

Thinking back, KKK did play in 4 tournaments in a row in both men's and mixed doubles and not just losing in early rounds, and mostly being unseeded too. Not bad for a young upstart.

Waaa great match between Taufik Vs. Lin. Especially in set three when both players did many hard rallies and nettings. They smashed only at the right moment, and it usually worked! Even though the smash didn't that hard but the accuracy and precision were great.

Jae-Youn is the sole reason i came to watch the tournament. I think she's one of the cutest women singlers around and i was so damn freaking happy when she agreed to pose for my camera. i was like her only supporter during her match vs Eriko Hirose (JPN) which she eventually lost. She only reached the round of 16s, when i was expecting her to play Xie Xing Fang in the final -_- nvm, Jae-Youn FIGHTING !

Taufik Hidayat and Chen Hong will meet in the finals of the Indonesian Open badminton championship for the third consecutive time after winning their semifinal matches here on Saturday.

Taufik of Indonesia has won the previous two meetings and he will face the third seed from China at the expense of top seed Lin Dan whom he beat 15-5, 5-15, 11-15 in front of noisy home supporters inside the Bung Karno Tennis Indoor Stadium.

Chen Hong booked his final place after outlasting fellow Chinese and second seed Bao Chunlai, also in three games, 6-15, 15-6, 15-9.

"Holding two wins from the previous two final matches, I guess I have a good chance to win the third," Taufik said during a media conference after his semifinal match.

But Indonesia's hopes for a guaranteed title in the men's doubles did not materialize after Flandi Limpele/Eng Hian failed to overcome second seeds Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun of China, losing 17-15, 15-8.

Title hopes now rest on Luluk Hadiyanto/Alven Yulianto, who brushed aside Malaysian pair Chew Choon Eng/Choong Tan Fook 15-7, 13-15, 15-3.

China dominated the event also with representatives in the remaining three events.

They are already assured of the women's doubles title after top seeds Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen set up an all-Chinese final with third seeds Zhang Dan/Zhang Yawen.

Yang/Zhang were too strong for South Korea's Lee Kyung-won/Ha Jung-eun with an easy 15-3, 15-5 win, while the other two Zhangs were involved in a three-game fight with compatriots Du Jing/Yu Yang before pulling away with a 13-15, 15-8, 17-14 win.

In the mixed doubles, top seeds Zhang Jun/Gao Ling, who edged out Hendry Kurniawan Saputra/Li Yujia of Singapore 15-10, 15-8, will be challenged by English pair Robert Blair/Natalie Munt, the 15-9, 3-15, 15-8 winners over Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat/Wong Pei Tty.

Chinese contender in the women's singles is Xie Xingfang, who will be challenged by Japanese Eriko Hirose, a surprise 11-2, 9-11, 7-11 winner over Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand.

Xie cruised to the final after holding off Tracey Hallam of England 11-4, 11-4.

It looked dull on Saturday after rain fell outside the sports compound and clouds remained above. But that did not hold back spectators.

Few were seated early but when Taufik took to the court the number grew, almost filling the 4,000-seat stadium, shouting relentlessly at him.

Taufik honored their loyalty on court, though it was not an easy task in the early stage as the Indonesian star had to cope with a strong wind from the building's AC system.

"It was blowing too hard. I felt my shuttlecock was in the wrong place whatever shots I made. It was difficult to take control of my shots," Taufik said.

Taufik's hardship was evident when he fell to a string of either long or wide shots which handed Lin Dan eight points on the trot.

In the second game, it was Lin Dan who had to struggle with the wind, which allowed Taufik to level the score.

"In the third game, Taufik began the game on an unlucky side of the court and I told him to try to win as many points as possible," coach Mulyo Handoyo said.

Olympic champion Taufik was leading 8-5 during changeover. Though, he was dealt a brief fright when he trailed 9-11 before regrouping to wrap up the match.

While admitting difficulties caused by the strong wind, Lin Dan, who beat Taufik in 2001 in the only other meeting between them, appeared disappointed by the defeat.

"I had been confident about my prospects. I played well in the opening game but I could not maintain that winning momentum," he said through an interpreter.

SINGAPORE, 25 OCTOBER 2004 – Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat is among the first marquee name to be confirmed for next month’s Aviva Open Singapore 2004 (Nov 15 –21) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The 24-year-old Indonesian ace, who missed last year’s Open, will start as one of the pre-tournament favourites this year. The temperamental and flamboyant shuttler broke into tears after winning the Olympic men singles gold in Athens back in August. Taufik, the reigning Asian Games champion, also won the Asian Championships in April.

The current world number eight will have fond memories of the Singapore Indoor Stadium, where he won the 2001 Singapore Open in an epic final against Malaysia ace Wong Choon Hann. Taufik, who trained in Singapore briefly in 2001, is popular among badminton fans and is trained by famed coach Mulyo Handoyo, who used to guide Singapore ace Ronald Susilo.

“Taufik, like Ronald, both stand a good chance of winning big tournaments like the Aviva Open,” said Mulyo, speaking from the Indonesian training camp in Jakarta earlier today. “Of course, the Athens experience puts Taufik in good stead in the long run and he is in a very strong position for this year’s Singapore Open. I believe Taufik will still be playing even in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but by then, age will be a factor for him.”

Chinese star Chen Hong may have won the last two Singapore Opens, but if there is anyone who can break his stranglehold, it will be Taufik. The talented Indonesia ace has a perfect 5-0 head-to-head record against Chen Hong and holds a 1-0 lead against world number one Lin Dan and 3-2 lead against 2003 world champion Xia Xuanze in head-to-head meetings.

Besides perennial crowd favourite Taufik, badminton powerhouse Indonesia will also be deploying all its top doubles specialists to the US$170,000 Aviva Open Singapore.

Indonesia failed to win any of the five titles in the last two Singapore Opens, but this year, Olympic bronze medallists Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian, current world number two Luluk Hadiyanto and Yulianto Alven, 2003 All England champions Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto are all possible contenders for men’s doubles.

Flandy and Eng Hian won the Singapore Open back in 2002, but were representing England that year. The experienced pair is back playing under the Indonesian flag and this year, they managed to reach the semifinals of the All England, Korea Open, Japan Open and Asian Championships, before winning the bronze in Athens.

Luluk and Yulianto meantime are the hot Indonesian pairing after climbing to a career high world number two on Thursday. The relatively new pairing won this year’s Thailand and Malaysian Opens and finished runner-ups in the Malaysia and Swiss Opens.

But Indonesia’s best hopes for the men’s doubles title could lie with veterans Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto. The two veterans are re-united once again after competing most of this season with other partners. Sigit has been playing with Tri Kush Aryanto, while Candra has had three different partners in his last three tournaments.

Candra and Sigit are one of the most interesting men’s doubles pair in badminton history. The pair became world champions in 1997 at the age of 22, but their glory days were thought to be over after Sigit failed a dope test in 1998 and was banned for a year by the International Badminton Federation (IBF).

Candra then teamed up with Tony Gunawan and went on to win the 1999 All England and the 2000 Sydney Olympics gold. However, Candra and Sigit were again reunited in 2001, won the Japan Open the same year and reached the final of the 2003 World Championships, before splitting up again. Now reunited for a third time, the Indonesia pair will be hoping to win their third Singapore Open titles after wins in 1997 and 1998.

Besides the Indonesian team, fans can also expect several other Indonesian ‘imports’ at the Aviva Open.

Tony Gunawan will represent the United States and he will play in the men doubles with Howard Bach. Dicky Palyama will be wearing Holland’s colours in the men singles, while Agus Hariyanto, Yohan Wiratama and Albertus Susanto Njoto is representing Hong Kong.

you should use attachment instead of the image button. you will find the manage attachment button when you make a reply. that's the most robust way to post a picture here.
