View Full Version : Indonesia Open Finals Day

Please post progress of matches here.

First of all, let me confirm that KKK/CCM actually lost to Riyadi/??? in the earlier round and not as widely reported.

For today's matches, I somehow don't see any interesting prospects. I normally hold the view that semifinal matches are more interesting, but this year's Indonesia Open finals are even worse than usual, downright anti-climatic.

XD, WD and WS feel like mismatches from the outset, although (1) Zhang/Gao seem beatable nowdays, (2) Yang/Zhang have kept on winning but showing chinks in the armour at Singapore Open and (3) we will see how Park Joo Bong's girl fare with the Chinese elite.

Even the MS and MD are not that appetizing as finals. Somehow Chen Hong does not fire the imagination like Lin, Bao or Peter Gade does, but if Chen plays at his best level, it will be a good match. Also, Luluk/Alven seem unstoppable. The MD event is the worst affected when the Danes skip the tournament, and it shows. Anyhow, like before, if Cai/Fu can play at their best level, ... (Note: Both Chen and Cai/Fu have not been playing at their best recently)

Another factor to note is the wind factor. A lot of reports and players' comments site the wind (not just draft, wind). I think it accounts to more than a few upsets. Having the tournament in a tennis stadium is wrong from the start. Can't they find some place better?

Next up : Men's Doubles : Alven/Luluk vs Fu/Cai ;)

this is imho the most exciting match of the final.

the head-to-head is 5-1 in favor of Cai/Fu. however, the last time they played was 8 months ago and it was won by Luluk/Alven. and Luluk/Alven has improved leaps-and-bounds since then and Cai/Fu has barely improved.

my prediction is a 2 games win by Luluk/Alven. but we all hope for a longer match as that will be a treat for us badminton fans. :)

Chinese pair Zhang Jun/Gao Ling add another grand prix title this year to their collection after defeating unexpected finalist Robert Blair/Nathalie Munt.

Blair/Munt starts the game very fiercely with Blair shooting strong smashes that wreck the Chinese pair's defence. Unfortunately despite Munt's good play, Gao Ling is much faster at the net returning the bird to attack back.

Blair's brilliant attacks are sometimes ruined by Munt's careless play. It also seems she was the weakest link on several occasions. But Munt also contributes a lot to Blair's attack by setting up the game and ball for him.

In the first set tough fights occur until both reach 9 but then the chinese pair are unstoppable and take the first set. In the second set Zhang/Gao seem to be more in control over the English pair and leaving them 8-1. But the Blair/Munt fight back and trail until they get 9 points. At 14-9 Munt's smash is out and the Chinese pair collect their title.

Well, 3 of 5 titles for China is not bad but darnit, both men's teams fail at the most crucial time. Indo's singles and doubles are rising again.... China has to watch out in next TC if they want to retain the cup.

I don't like Taufik myself. But after watching him on DVD so many times, I have to admit that he may be the most talent player since Zhao. If he is at his best, he can always find a way to beat anyone including Lin and Bao. One example is the 2003 Sudraman Cup.

I can't believe some of you are actually harking the death of China's men's team. Chinese men consist 3 of the 4 semifinalists in the Indonesian Open, and they have title-winning juniors coming up right behind them.

It is hard to deny Taufik on his own turf, yet Lin Dan stretched him fully and Chen Hong did not do too bad against him. Who knows what would have happened if Bao Chunlai were to face him?

Indonesia has Taufik and an inconsistent Sony and one or two unproven juniors. Denmark has a couple of ageing stars and no apparent juniors. Malaysia has two players who are just merely showing potential. As for Korea, who knows what's happening in there now.

It's a different story with doubles, but China has always won the Thomas Cup with the strength of singles, with some reliable doubles sometimes.

Saw something interesting during the prize giving ceremony today:

1. Lin Dan was standing among the journalists, recording Xie's glorious moment on the podium...

2. Taufik Hidayat was given an opportunity to express his gratitude/feeling, etc after he received his cheque... I can't hear a single word he said although he was using a microphone!!The crowd's cheers were deafening!! Taufik is indeed treated as though he is David Beckham... How come Alven/Luluk doesn't gets this sort of opportunity? ;)

I agree about being nice to the loser, but its Xie's turn to have a place in the sun. Did you emphatize with her when she went down again and again to the big 3? Say nice things to comfort her in all these 2.3 years?

Agree with u hcyong! If Indonesia players are keeping this type of performance then I will say only Taufik and Luluk/Alven can give some threat to other teams in the year 2006 TC.Taufik is good thats one thing we cannot deny but I think he is still a "homeground champion",when he goes out he is still struggling to get to the top form.As for Luluk and Alven they too struggle when not playing at home.I still think China are very invincible...and I have a strong feeling if CWLee,Hafiz and Koo/Chan of Msia are keeping up with good performance,Malaysia too may win the TC again in 2006.Even there are a few very young junior pairs in Msia now are showing very impressive progress(if you still remember last month Singapore Open QF)....So stay tune all badminton maniacs for next year circuit...we will see which countrys have their players improving the most...

there's this time where i was watching this MD match between china and korea, and i was wondering... what if china is being divided up according to their provinces? will they still be a superpower in badminton and other sports?

because so many of their players come from all the provinces, so maybe their strength will be dispersed if china breaks up.

but the chinese (china nationals) are better athletes, generally speaking. their tough training schedule is soooo infamous that i think it's not for those who can't bear hardship...

yep, Soni is really inconsistent. will perspire if you see him play.
but i think badminton overall need to have some revamp to make the competition among all countries stronger.

There is nothing wrong with Taufik except that he wasted 6 years during which he could have won everything. But he is his own enemy and a sourpuss - sulks all the time. Has he ever looked friendly and smiling happy? Kuncorro is young and he has partly the same problem as BCL - they are too tall for the optimal bandminton height. Look at them going down for the short corners -like giraffes. LD just needs a few lessons in humility; he is very unpleasent to watch when he plas or when he talks. As for the MD, Cai/Fu seem to have reached a plateau and Sang/Zheng are stale and not performing.Apart from the China Open, the Chinese youngsters in all disciplines have not been given a chance and those who have a chance are awestruck or maybe not good enough. I wait for the curtain to rise or a sign that I misread everything - would that it were true.

I really hope China won't be broken up into provinces. There is only this number of Olympic spots. As it is, the whole of China is just limited to 3 spots per event and that gives other countries some chance.

I think the competition between the provinces are very intense. Even the second-rate shuttlers are good enough especially the women, which other countries seem to relatively neglect. For instance, they go to Singapore, France or Hong Kong and make a name for themselves there.

I don;t think he wasted the six years whole??? I thought he began wasting his time from year 2001 or 2002??! just three years.

In 1999, 2000 he managed to reach All England but lost painfully to Gade and 2001 reaching semifinal WC but lost to Hendrawan who very rarely defeated him because of injury.

Don't know this is subjective as they only met twice this year, China Open and Thomas Cup finals. Even though China Open was last November and Bao won it, it was three sets (10-15, 15-3, 15-12) so relatively close.
While Thomas was in May and Bao winning, the first set tight(15-13, 15-6)

Agree with the Taufik & LD statements. However, Kuncoro being too tall is BS (he is only 1.76 which makes him shorter than f.e. Gade, young Hashim, and many Chinese players, let alone legends like Zhao, Frost or Hoyer). Kuncoro himself admitted - probably rightly so - that compared to some other top players like Taufik, Lin, Gade he is less talented, but compensates a lot by working hard. He has a persistent kind of game that troubles some players: like Gade, who has said that Sony's slowed down game doesn't suit him, because he (Gade) likes faster paced rallies. But apart from this quality, Sony has very few special strokes or weapons for a world class player. He performs well when outrallying other top players when they are a little short of their peaks (less important events).

There is nothing wrong with Taufik except that he wasted 6 years during which he could have won everything. But he is his own enemy and a sourpuss - sulks all the time. i agree. sony just doesnt have killing shots in the same class and level as taufik. thats why he gets into long hard matches when playing againts highly defensive players (eg boonsak)

Congrats to Taufik and Luluk/Alven as well as to the other winners(WS, WD and MXD)..

Again, like i mentioned earlier, Lin Dan and his co-horts will have another chance to prove themselves against Taufik in two weeks in the Copenhagen Masters..This time it's more in a "neutral" court, so no more excused of "home" court etc.

Yah, IMO, Taufik "wasted" 2-3 yrs.(2001-2003) while his coach moved to S'pore, eventhough he was able to win the last 2 Indonesian Open..I thought his coach coming back was the "biggest" difference as well as his "metal maturity" since then..Add to that the incentives of winning double the money, sure indeed should motivate him...I also don't think BCL would have won against Taufik in this year's Indonesia Open if he would beat Chen Hong in the SF(BCL won vs. Taufik in the China Open SF because Taufik injured his foot badly).

Anyhoo, let's move on folks..Looking forward to the Copenhagen Masters in a couple weeks and then next year(ie. All England, Sudirman Cup, World Championships)..:)).
