BADMINTON: Kim Hock’s first test coming up
Rizal Hashim
Feb 5:
THE German Open on Feb 28-March 5 will become the first stage for chief coach Yap Kim Hock to gauge the outcome of the weekly simulation matches between the two groups of singles shuttlers.

Under scrutiny will be Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choon Hann and Lee Tsuen Seng, who train under foreign coach Li Mao, and those who come under Misbun Sidek’s wings – Muhammad Hafiz Hashim and Kuan Beng Hong.

All five will head a team of 14 to Mulheim on the Ruhr River, an industrial city famed for its research on coal.

In order to keep everybody on their toes, simulation matches between the two group of shuttlers every Wednesday and Saturday have been conducted under Kim Hock’s supervision.

Basically, Kim Hock’s intention is to see whether the programme is bringing in the desired result ahead of the All-England championship on March 8-13, followed by the Swiss Open on March 20-26.

“The matches between the two groups is not to judge who is the better coach. We all work for the greater good of the team.

“What we want is for the shuttlers to be prepared for the three tournaments,” said Kim Hock, adding that singles coaches Wong Tat Meng and Tay Seu Bock have been helping Misbun and Li Mao whip the players into shape.

During their playing days, Li Mao was always at the receiving end of Misbun’s crafty play but his reputation as a producer of champions has certainly surpassed his achievements as a player.

Appointed last month as BA of Malaysia’s high-performance singles coach, Li Mao’s job is to revive the flagging fortunes of Choong Hann and Tsuen Seng as well as enhance Chong Wei’s reputation as a rising star.

Following Li Mao’s appointment, Misbun is free to focus his energy on his product, Hafiz, whose win in the All England two years ago after nullifying the airborne attacks from Chen Hong seemed like ages ago. Also enjoying Misbun’s touch is Beng Hong, whose game has been described as being similar to that of 1995 world champ, Hariyanto Arbi.

Kim Hock, who was disappointed with Malaysia’s performance in the recent Korean Open, will also cast a glance at his charges in the doubles section, Choong Tan Fook/Chew Choon Eng and Koo Kien Keat/Chan Chong Ming.
