Peter Rasmussen is going to stop playing Badminton. At US Open He Felled on his foot, and he said to the national coach that he would stop playing international.
I FEEL SOOOOOOO SORRY FOR HIM..! :crying:
It's really sad that his career had to end like this.
I had hoped, that he would recover at least to celebrate one more big title.
Who has seen him playing in my alltime favourite match (WCH 97 vs. Sun Jun), knows at what incredible level he was able to play.
He really would have deserved to quit with one more big bang, sniff.

I feel sorry for him too. Both Gade and him were having so many injuries. I think the Danish national team needs to find someone to look at their Feng Shui. ;)

Well, congrats to Peter for his great achievements, despite being injured so long and often.
There is now only ONE MS World Champion in activity (XXZ), and for how long?... :(

Interview with PR about his decision to stop (in Danish)
http://www.badminton.dk/default.asp?pageid=2249
I've translated a few quotes from the interview to the best of my ability:
"I've had fantastic expiriences with badminton and I quit with my head held high. Others may think my career riddled with injuries but I have a different view. For me 90 percent of my career has been positive. You have to accept that when you're reaching for the extreme then there will be difficulties and disappointments."
...
"I've always trained hard - maybe too hard, but it's been worth it. Badminton has given me a lot. I've said it this way: Badminton is life and life is badminton."
Farewell Peter and thanks for everything!

This is such sad and depressing news. Peter Rasmussen is one of my all-time favourite MS players. Plagued by injuries, he could not always live up to his potential, but when he did he was absolutely fantastic to watch. Such fluid movement around court, amazing jump smashes and sharp net play. The 1997 WC semi against Haryanto Arbi is one example, and to some extent also the legendary final against Sun Jun.
It appears that his dynamic playing style took its toll.
His career ends with a retired US Open final, but for me his last great match will be the 3rd singles in the Thomas Cup semi against Indonesia, where he convincingly beat Simon Santoso and won the tie for Denmark.
I read that Peter is now going to complete his medical studies. It's comforting to know that he will have a career after badminton. I wish him the best of luck with his new life.

It was his picture at my desktop saying to me good morning every time I switch on my computer in the morning.
His dynamics is absolutely amazing (as well as Raphael's eye).
We will miss you.

Odd timing since Carlton have just released new versions of the "Rasmussen" rackets

I am just wandering, I've seen the first part of the Rasmussen vs Sun Jun match (and it is easily one of the best matches i've ever seen) and one of the commentators says that Peter Rasmussen has a style that can beat a asian player as he was taught by one, does anyone know who the chinese coach was?
Thanks in advance

And yes, that is a great match.
But Peter was actually playing even better when he beat Arbi in the semi-final of the same tournament... :)

I agree it was an incredible match and it was very unfortunate that Sun Jun's leg cramped up, but before that Peter Rasmussen played extremely well, tireing out his Chinese opponent and his jump smash was incredible!, getting the lines frightengly well and manage to come back from a 9-13 to take it 18-13 in the 2nd game it was just incredible to watch showing that Peter Rasmussen had strong mental disipline. And in all fairness the handling of the dilema of Sun Jun's cramping was handled very poorely, Peter Rasmussen having to wait a long time between rallys and he too having to stretch to keep the latic acids out his muscles. But at the end it was a very nice thing to watch as Peter Rasmussen won but at the same time rather sad as Sun Jun had to get rushed out not even shaking Peter's hand.
The feelings going through Peter Rasmussen at the very moment he won i can't imagine:D. Don't think i'll ever see a match as good as that.

He has started running, and if his body allows it, he will maybe start competing next year.

I have spoken with Peter, and he say that he would like to try to play again, but it will NOT be on top level.
