View Full Version : Whats the best shot you've ever played?
R20190 02-16-2005, 06:57 AM ... or what was the most memorable shot you ever played?
For me it was when I was playing in a school singles tournament, I was at the net, opponent lobbed me, so I was chasing a shuttle which had gone past me on my backhand side.
I played the shuttle with my back to the net and the shuttle inches from the baseline with a backhand under-arm shot.
My opponent was waiting at the net for a weak return and to his surprise the shuttle shot cross-court, skimmed just over the net for a tight drop and landed on the singles sideline before the service line.
I did intend to hit that shot but never to that precision! :D

Wow you are using your tennis skills and adapting them to badminton...nice!
I can't remembered the ultimate shot I have played (probably cos I was as surprised as my opponent), but there is one shot I feel the greatest satisfaction in.
It's to anticipate a lift and jumping to intercept (by smashing down) at the net, just as the shuttle is about to rise up. I think I am on form if I can pull that shot off at least once.

I, too, would love to pull off that shot at least once in a match that counts. I played against, from what I was told, an ex-England junior national and he was able to pull it off on a consistent basis.
To answer the OP's question it's the run-off-the-mill back to the net, shuttle between the legs shot. But, the shot ended up clipping the tape and trickling over. :) Unfortunately, it was just a fun open gym match when we were all practically just trying all sorts of trick shots.
Gollum 02-16-2005, 09:55 AM One that sticks in my mind:
I was playing in the John Radcliffe hospital, Oxford. It was a Chinese club that played until the early hours of the morning. They were generally pretty good players. Bizarrely, they used plastic shuttles and the roof was a little low. I was visiting with an Asian friend who knew them. It felt distinctly hardcore
My then doubles partner and I played a game against the (then) county junior champion and his partner. We lost, but gave them a good game. Onto the shot:
The shuttle was at about net height in the backhand front midcourt (maybe slightly behind the service line). I was getting into a good rhythm; for once, I approached the shuttle with good footwork and balance. This gave me control.
Watching both opponents, I started to play a backhand drive. I watched to see if they would both move to cover it; the rearcourt player moved first. Just as I was about to hit the shot, the net player shifted his balance towards my backhand side; as he did this, I dropped my elbow and swung my body to produce a perfect cross-court netshot, which cruised the net, crossing late, and landed on the outside line. He didn't get near it.
The whole stroke-cycle seemed to happen in slow motion. I seemed to have lots of time to observe exactly what the opponents were doing, and time to change my shot at the last moment.
I think this is the only time I've received a round of applause from the sidelines at a clubnight :D

splitstep 02-16-2005, 03:20 PM i did a drive flick serve just missing the net and went straight into the oponents forehead :p was sssooooo funnny!!!! :D he was a decent player aswell haaha
Gollum 02-17-2005, 07:38 AM was the junior champ very tall, used a red mp88?
I don't remember his racket, but he was astonishingly tall for his age; this was about 2-3 years ago, and he was 14 then (I think).
wilfredlgf 02-17-2005, 08:51 AM A jump smashed that was actually a sliced drop shot. Don't know why I remember this presumably normal shot, but we were in the middle of a fierce rally (doubles), my side attacking with smashes pressuring the others to keep lifting until I decided to try to slice and abruptly slow it.
Fell right in the middle, almost dead centre.
The opponents stopped in their feet, looked at each other and shook their heads. :)
tinkerbella122 02-17-2005, 05:10 PM The best shot I've ever did was a really tight drop shot . It was pretty high when it is straight above the net . But then it just came right down . That was one of my best drops ... but I've only done it once during practice ...:D
oab729 02-17-2005, 05:27 PM I was playing a singles game with someone and i was up 15-14, we were playing win by 2 at that point. It was my opponents serve and my opponent was running me hard. I was exhausted, he did a high baseline serve and i dropped. He cross dropped and i net cleared, but he cleared to my backhand, and i had to run as fast as i could back to the net to cross drop down and then he quickly played it back w/ a drop so i had to run and dive to retreive it and i tried to net clear, and it hit the net and tumbled over just barely.
V!nce 02-17-2005, 09:27 PM for me, it was during a doubles game at the YMCA
the net opponent did this reallly tight drop shot over the net, and I had to run to get it
Right before it landed, I managed to slice it and it flew straight up and literally rolled over the net to land on the other side.
It happened so fast that I was unable to see if it was in or not, lol
Fortunately, my opponent saw the entire thing and was like.... ---->
I was just warming up with net drops with a partner. All of a sudden when I tapped the feather over the net, it got caught on the "TOP" of tape and was stuck there, until we plucked it out.
To bad i can't do those during a singles or doubles game :p
DaN_fAn 02-18-2005, 03:36 AM even i have hit the backhand underarm on quite few occasions,,each time it has suprised my opponent but only twice has it been a winner.i have 1 more shot too-when the shuttle comes to my forehand corner near the baseline i sometimes do a smash action[intending to hit straight] but at the last moment change direction using my wrist and it lands crosscourt on the centre of the sideline like a half-smash.almost every opponent have i tricked with this shot.:D
Neil Nicholls 02-18-2005, 04:42 AM I don't often hit the shuttle between my legs, but I did recently in a doubles match, in a Sigit style.
I was in a flat driving rally, and losing. The other guy was getting closer to the net and I was backing off. Then he hit a shot at my stomach that I couldn't take in front of me.
I jumped in the air to let the shuttle go between my legs, and played it back through my legs, and it luckily went low over the net.
I don't think he was expecting it to come back, and then he played a weak net shot which my partner managed to pick off and we won the rally.
Schneider 02-18-2005, 06:27 AM I was playing a School singles match away and it was match point (we played to 11) 10/6 and I did a long serve and he did a powerful over-arm clear to my fore-arm corner so I looked like I was going to smash and actually did a cross court over-arm slice and he couldn't get to it. It was a great shot to end the match with.:D
ploppers 02-18-2005, 04:30 PM Well, I don't have a 'best shot' but I had a best rally before. The opponent from the back court half smashed a really angled shot landing almost on the service line. I dive for it and gave it a really nice tight net shot where he had to cross court drop. I then dived again for the drop and pushed it to the baseline. I remember that rally going on for a while longer, but I just couldn't believe how far I could jump.:)

m_poppema 02-27-2005, 07:54 AM My best shot ever, that actually was a match-point too...
I was playing singles, I remember that I wasn't winning the point because I was defending all the time..
At a surtain point in the rally I was out of potition and had to run to return a tight dropshot..
My footwork was really bad so I finished too close to the net, my oponent then thought he had won the rally and just played a weak clear..
I started running again and played a between the legs with my back to the net (i happen to use this trick when I play people who aren't that good)
I intended it to be a drop so he had to lift it again (had to be real tight obviously)
It was so well placed that my oponent couldn't even reach it as it landed exactly on the line well in front of the first service line..
He stood there, in awe 'cause he thought he would have another change to turn the match around..
trunks512 03-03-2005, 11:32 PM my running back hand jump smash (no not a back hand kill at the net)
1/100 tries i can get it
