Have I missed something. Is the world championship taking from 2005 taking place once a year instead of every second year? Read at worldbadminton.net that Madrid where going to host the 2006 world championsship.

Yes from now on the WC will be held annually.
I dont really agree, I think it devalues the anticipation. 4years like OG is too long, 2 Years is Just right, but nevermind, at least we have another big tournament every year, but maybe some surprise winners due to the frequency.

arghh.. totally agree with you. The prestige in being WC champ is from now on not that great, almost like being AE champ.
i am 50-50 on a yearly WC.
a few years back before all the economy troubles, there was a World Grand Prix Finals that was a 6* event with lots of prize money. it acts as a conclusion event for all the small grand prix over the year. players like it coz it is lucrative in terms of both points and prizes.
now that it is gone, we no longer have a yearly competition. and we are starting to see the attendance of grand prix events varying as there is no incentive to gain more points.
if the WC is held every year, perhaps that way players will be more keen on attending more events like they did before the Olympics. it will be a real treat to us badminton fans.
i do agree that the prestige is somehow less when an event happens every year. perhaps the IBF can make it up by putting in some good prize money. or how about a special cup for each individual event? a big cup not dissimilar to the Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cup where the title holder needs to return at the end of their reigning year.

I think we need something similar to the grand prix finals and perhaps the problem could be solved by reviving the grand prix finals in where top 16 compete.

Accordingt to www.worldbadminton.net madrid will held the badminton W.C. in 2006 ?? this event became annually?? did i miss something? 'm quite confuse by that .. there is alreay an IBF WC in august 2005 and a few months after another WC??  That's weiird
Rumour has it the IBF are now doing one WC per year instead of every 2 years, something to do with filling in the void left by other withdrawn competitions.
Do have to say it will detract from the prestige of the tournament. :(

It is no rumor. It is official that from now on, there will a WC every year. The IBF officials said this almost one year ago.

Yes from now on the WC will be held annually.
Is anybody reading these posts???
I am reading this post now..:) I personally think it would bring some prestige if its held once every 2 years. But anyway I guess that WC and AE is a tourney that every players will look foward to play in.
Look at Tennis , Wimbeldon is held every year. But yet it didnt lose its prestige.

Wimbledon is so prestigious is because of the history and tradition - the grasscourt competition had been held there for years and considered the biggest of all tournaments in the tennis calendar. Sort of like AE during its heydays.
I don't quite suscribe to an annual WC thingy but a year end GP is definitely something they should bring back. The climax to a year of badminton as well as the incentive to play extra hard for the whole year can definitely help increase in competition.
To me it's either WC every two years or one year end 'ultimate' tournament where only the top 32 will play.

IMO, this is probably a marketing strategy by IBF to expand the game. By making the WC yearly, my thinking is it will stir up more interest esp. in Europe thus more interest, more money-flow. If this strategy is a success, it will reap much benefit and cash.
As I mentioned in one of my earliest post about the growth of badminton,
one way they(IBF) can generate good success is to invest in the U.S. I know the sport is not at all popular here, and I'm not saying this is the main reason, but have you guys ever wonder why hasn't IBF make a push to invest for the sport in the U.S. all these years??I mean, it seems like this is the only continent in the world that IBF has been avoiding like a plague, until this year again. I mean it's the U.S., the center of world commercialism and arguably the "biggest influence" of the rest of the world today. Where else could IBF really start it's influence other than in the U.S. You've got New York in the East, Chicago in the Middle(soon it will be Houston, TX as the NTC) and Los Angeles in the West. What else is the excuse?? It seems like it's a far-fetched idea, but I'm waiting for a day where U.S.(with all it's available resources) can produce world-class players just like China, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, Denmark, Japan...again.
I'm not suggesting IBF should start moving all the big tournaments to the U.S. but say if they do *at least* 1 big grand prix tournament each yr. in the U.S.(let it be WC, SC, TC, UC, well AE probably will stay where it's at), then I'm pretty sure it will gain some interest. Esp. now with several former professional badminton players coaching in the U.S. Ah, but then again, there's also the economic factor, esp. for certain nations....
On that note, I like IBF's idea of opening training centers all over the world, esp. one in the U.S..at least they're giving U.S. a try..
anyways...just my 2 cents..

I agree that US is very strong in commercialism.. but now everyone even the Statesseems to look to China.. i think its time to look East. Or just produce some American World badminton Champion.

The WC will be held every year EXCEPT the OLYMPIC year.everyone in the thread are saying that the prestige etc. becomes lesser if it is held every year.but i think it's going to do more good than harm.It is the wc,tc,uc,ae that are noticed in general in people living in non major badminton countries.so considering that u could say that this is definitely a good move to help promote the game.because it is these big tourneys that get noticed.of course the negative of this will be that players wont value it as much.a player may lose but then think ,'what the heck ,there is always next year.'and the solution as u have all suggested would be to have real biggy prize money and say have a great cup carved of gold or silver.

Sorry, i might be talking more about politics here..
Hmm, i was just wondering about this. True China is now "trying" to put itself in the forefront along with the rest of the elite nations. The key:population to fuel their economy. But on the other hand, the U.S. has been waiting and looking for quite a while to jump in and invest in China, basically most elite nations are jumping in and investing in China. Actually the U.S. are quite happy with the trend that China is approaching a more "democratic" system and in a sense "challenging" the States. Just look at Wal-Mart, who has already "invaded" China with their stores(since 1996). They brought their system overseas to China and then trained the people there. I heard in a television report that by 2010, Walmart plans to open some 1,000 stores in China?!?!. Now even more American companies are getting in there. Even the American steel and construction industries are basically selling their stuff overseas, limiting their supplies in the U.S. and mainly selling them to China, one reason is to assist them with their preparation for the upcoming 2008 Olympics(where they are erecting new stadium(s) left and right). On that note, U.S. is not only "very strong" in commercialism. IMO, they are "the center" of commercialism in the world.
China, IMO, as a nation is beginning to show it's mettle, it still hasn't put any "major technology" stamp in the U.S...yet. Cars are mostly still dominated by Japan. Computers are beginning to show some influence, but Taiwan is tagging along. Telecom are either by Japan or Korea.
..just my 2 cents..
