Kenneth Johannsen lost to Shoji Sato of Japan in 3 sets. One of the biggest upsets so far beside the lost of Gopichand.

I would say Ghaffar beating palyama also a big upset. Palyama was 10th seed and had beaten Ghaffar in straight sets just last week in German open. Home advantage?!

Apart from these not many upsets, a few big names out, but to good players.

I say the Xia Lee Hyun Il match too, and I thought Xia was just being his normal inconsistent self. Some moments of brilliance, but too many mistakes when he got the upper hand in rallies.

The biggest upset today must be Jens and Mettes lost to compatriots Tomas and Kamilla,

15 - 8 , 15 - 13 to Tomas and Kamilla

hmmm, it's an upset against the seeding system - but tomas and kamilla are the danish mixed champions. they seem to be the form danish mixed pair at the moment.

Pi Hongyan going out is probably quite an upset. and Both Zhang Jun and Gao Ling and Nathan Robertson adn Gail Emms seem to be making hardwork of their round 2 matches.

It's not just an upset against the seeds. Go back six months or so, and there would be a class of difference between these two pairs. I was pretty sure that the Danish Championship victory was a freak incident, and that Jens/Mettes loss had more to with themselves than with the opposition. I think few Danes really considered Thomas/Kamilla to be the best mixed pair in Denmark. To illustrate that, before this AE match even Thomas himself admitted that he feared they would get totally creamed by Jens & Mette this time! (He used the Danish term "snittet", which translates to "cut with a knife"!)

However, it is clearly time that I (and Thomas) face it: Thomas and Kamilla have obvsiously improved a LOT. It remains to be seen if they are just "Jens and Mette-killers" or if they can take trouble the rest too...

A good win it was, no doubt about that.

...

And Pi was indeed ousted by Kaori Mori. The Japanese ladies are leaving victims all over the place in this tournament! And now, Eriko Hirose seems to be winning, this time against Maria Kristin Yulianti...

I saw some of Thomas/Kamilla v Kristian Roebuck/Liza Parker in round 1, and Thomas/Kamilla were struggling early on. Maybe just 1st round nerves.

Is Jens more likely to have a "bad day" in XD than in MD?
It may be that Jens is stuck with one style of play, but Thomas/Kamilla are younger and more able to adapt ?

I don't see them as much as you, Mag, but it's just an impression I get.

Well, when Jens is not playing well, he can be really lousy. Maybe that happened today, but I rather think that maybe Thomas/Kamilla have found a good strategy to beating this pair. Or perhaps Mette had one of her days off... :p

Next match for Thomas/Kamilla is the quarterfinal against Blair/Munt, certainly not an impossible task. A possible semifinal will provide tougher opposition though...

Thomas and Kamilla also thrashed Mogensen/Olsen in their national champs, this is nothing specific to Jens/Mette, they were just above their opponents...

What I was wondering was rather whether they would be able to maintain the same performances at international level and the answer seems to be positive! :)

Well, I should have written "Dane-killers" rather than "Jens-and-Mette-killers". As part of the national squad these pairs all know each other really well. Playing one's compatriots (be they ranked #1 or not) is very different from playing other "big guns".

Nobody would be more happy than me if a new good Danish pair has emerged! :)

Well, I suppose for the moment they have just proved they can not only beat the best Danes in "domestic competitions" but also beat the best Danes in major international competitions.
Now they still need to prove they can beat the top pairs from other countries! ;)

Not sure they have the shoulders to struggle against top chinese pairs as Jens/mette do.

Not sure either that chinese coach would have let a "second knife" pair beat his top one in order to keep the best chances to win the tournament.

Amen!

I still need to see them play well against a good asian couple before I draw any conclusions...

I wouldn't say it is an upset Gade has lost to roslin. He was very lucky to have beaten him last year in QF. Roslin had him, but made three simple errors that let gade get back in.

upsetting to gade fans, but not a huge upset.

I thought you'll be happier if a new good SWEDISH pair emerged to take on the Danes and become "Dane Killers" instead! :D

Of course that would be great if we could have some success for our swedish players.

IMO the biggest negative surprise is that there is no dane MS in the quarter, nor any korean XD in quarter:crying:

On the positive side I'd say the japanese girls are no doubt the revelation. As already mentioned, what will happen in Uber cup?

Positive individuals, Eriko Hirose and Shoji Sato must equally be the buzz so far. Also the best tournament in ages for Lee Hyun -Il.
