if you can catch the shuttle in mid-air, pick a shuttle off the group with your racket, or spin the racket on your finger you are a C player. If you can do two, you are B. If you can do all three, you are A. ;)

play an open tournament. Or ask people at a club how they usually fare at tournaments and then compare yourself.

It varies. I was invited to join an "advance" badminton playing group, once. And I was treated to a different interpretation of "advance."

A more accurate way is to join tournaments, and see which flight you end up at. At the last Collingwood (in Vancouver) tourney, I ended up in "C" flight. See? :D

what if you go flight b, but then get killed really quickly? whereas if you intentionally go to flight c by losing, and then become flight c finalist?

The problem is that there are so many good players playing at C and D level. I signed up for D level a couple times. One match I beated my opponent by 15-2, 15-3, but turn around in another game I was betan by 1-15, 3-15. I can't tell if I really belong to D level.

Well you'll come across players like that in D. Sometimes players play 2 flights, C and D. And you may have come across a C player who's playing D as well.
