Comments:
1) Gong ZC closed out in the final game? Maybe the 7 point format doesn't suit her. I saw part of her game in the WGPF. Much more attack style which is not her natural game and perhaps more mistakes as a result.
2) Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu. A breakthrough result!! These guys have been together since the beginning of the year after the retirement of Yu Jin Hao. Looks like things are starting to happen. Zhang/Zhang combination can be inconsistent with their play - I think it depends on Zhang Wei being on form or not. Then again Sigit also can be very inconsistent at times. China must be eyeing up that Thomas cup in 8 months time. Still some way to go in consistency, though.
3) Zhang Jiewen & Wei Yili winning against Gao/Huang. That must have been some match. Tian Bing Yi said Zhang/Wei are the girls for the future and got a lot of hopes pinned on them. He said this at the Japan Open 2001.
4) Liu Yong keeps changing Mxd doubles partner. My guess is China coaches now want Zhang Jiewen to concentrate on level doubles first. After another couple of years, we'll see her back in the Mxd doubles preparing for the next Olympic games.

Things worked out as I expected tho I wanted some other Chinese men or women to win, but they all come from the same stable. No major junior breakthro except in the WD where the senior women's pair was dropped in the semis by the top junior pair. Ellis.

Maybe Gong Zhichao doesn't need to change her style. Andy Chong (Chong Weng Kai, played MD for Malaysia with (Misbun or Jalani) Sidek at '92 Olympics in Barcelona), says that under the 7 point format the stroke player might have to lose the first game and come back in games 2, 3, & 4. I think we can all agree that GZC is the classic stroke player.
OTOH, GZC's old style must take a lot of conditioning to keep up that fantastic footwork and cover the court completely for an entire match. Maybe she doesn't want to or can't do that anymore. Stamina and great defense used to be two of Ardy Wirinata's best weapons, but when he didn't have the time to train to the level required to obtain that stamina he changed his style.
Please excuse my rambling from topic to topic, but I don't remember GZC ever having a serious injury (if she had, my wife, one of GZC's biggest fans, would have worried about it). Does anyone know of any injuries?
You're not rambling Marshall. I think the stuff you've said is pretty solid though I'm no Gong fan. No, I really haven't heard of her being hampered by any seious injury.
Eddy Choong in a recent book compares experimental 7 point
with 15 point as follows:
7 points is like running 5 races of 100m with 2.5 mins rest
between each.
15 points is like running 2/3 400m races with little rest in
between.Even within 15 game it is impossible to maintain a frenetic pace.
Chong Weng Kai used to be Msia's 3rd singles in T Cup.
I know it is like playing an old record but 15 points don't allow
players to produce best, more like an endurance race.On Tv
15 points was great in good old days when people had the time to watch TV for hours and govs were generous enogh to broadcast fr hours, nowadays with commercialisation of TV programs and a more hectic lifestyle most people have short attention spans which can only justify1/2 hours of programs.
If Tony/Halim was participating in China Open, both pairs will be more motivated and either one of the pairs would grab the MD title.

Interesting points, Bbn. Where can I buy Eddie Choong's book?
Of course, ppl in the US will sit and watch baseball, tennis, & golf for a couple of hours (with breaks for commercials), so they might do the same for badminton.
Do you know when Andy Chong switched from singles to doubles, and which Sidek brother he played with in Barcelona? My memory is terrible sometimes.
I had forgotten that he used to play singles, which makes his opinion on 7-pt strategy all the more interesting.
The thing I like about 15-pt format is watching the player's long-term strategies develop. When a competitor sees a flaw in opponent's game and starts a comeback, it's exciting. I'm not sure we'll see that flavor of excitement w/ 7 pts.

AGREED. Totally.
Ooi Lay Beng coauthor of basics of badminton
produced a second book called 'Way of the champions-Secrets of their Success" featuring Eddy,M Jegathesan and Istiaq Mubarak.
Sorry can't remember much about Chong Weng Kai or even Pang Chen, they were minnows.
Let's wait to hear Adel gripe about long winded 3 hour lectures
later to understand attention span.
Hahahaha.... u won't hear tt from me, Bbn. My lectures last 1 hr 20 min maximum (though I admit I was trying hard not to fall asleep watching a movie just now). You can hear me gripe abt my breaks though. I have 4-hr breaks bwt 2 classes on Mon and Wed. Waiting pisses me off. But things will be different once I start piling up on last-minute work.
only been to the US for one week, and already Adel's language has started to degrade.

i think the cold temperature has something to do with that.
ARRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Knock it off, you two.... I had an incredibly bad day today, well, sort of. First I lost my notepad (and I've only used 2 pages) and was late for this damn klas coz I forgot where it was held (I wrote in my notepad see?). Then, that klas turned out to be damn boring and one of the ref. books includes the BIBLE..... arrgghhhh...... Now I have to put myself on the waitlist for some other klas and pray hard tt ppl drop out of it so I can add on. It pisses me off all the more coz I was placed to sign up early.
The only good thing tt happened today was tt the Korean tr complimented my pronunciation. I think I shall continue practising on Lee Dong Soo's pictures.
Adel
ps. The cold is pissing me off too.

Adel are you a man or woman? Your language is that of a man but you want to practice infront of Lee Dong Soo ? Of course there nothing wrong if you are kinky or something, but since you display male/female characteristics you can pretend to be the other thing whatever you are in reality. Coco-nuts

Do what I did when I lived up North. Romanticize your situation. For example, after I watched "Dr. Zhivago" I was able to pretend I was Omar Sharif walking through the snow on my way to see Julie Christie, when really I was going to the supermarket, and the checkout clerk looked nothing like Julie Christie. So go rent the video and get to it. Make it an adventure. You'll have better success changing your attitude than you will changing the weather.
Good luck w/ yr classes.
BTW, now that you are away from May's bad influence, maybe your language will improve :)
