TSN replayed some of the highlights from the WJC this morning. In particular, the MS and MD finals. It was great to relive the spectacular action and to catch some of the crazy cheerleading characters in the crowd. All in all, I thought TSN did a creditable job putting the package together. They must have run commentary after viewing and editing tape... but sure sounded like the commentators were there watching live action. Also a great commercial on Richmond!

Although I commend TSN for putting on badminton, I must say the commentary left much to be desired. From the 10 minutes which I caught of the mens doubles final, the commentator literally said 8-9 times that "Oh that was a good serve."
It was just a regular low serve. No big deal.
There were a lot of uninformative comments and both commentators had a generally weak badminton vocabulary.
But hey, it's badminton on Canadian TV. They're forgiven.

Beggars can't be choosers. Imagine if an Asian country televised ice hockey and had to overdub commentary in their native tongue, how that would sound.
I can only guess the commentators were given a crash course in what to look for in badminton, and off you go. The "North American" style commentary was for the North American audience - at worse, the energy level made up for the lack of knowledge.
I, for one, am just happy to get badminton on TV. Let's hope for strong viewership numbers which might prompt our sports networks to show more.

Talk about ignorant.
Just watched 2000 Olympics MDF Wijaya/Gunawan vs Lee/Yoo. The commentator was atrocious. Got Wijaya/Gunawan names mixed up thoughout the whole match..had to mute volume, couldn't stand his commentary.
OTOH, give me the AE commentators anytime...

If you turn him down though, you lose the noise of the crowd, which really adds to the occasion in this case. I found him mixing up the names more funny than annoying. IMO nothing can detract from a classic match!
Give the Guy on CAN TV some cred, it cannot be often that they have to comment on Badminton matches (if ever before), it is hard to be a commentator. TV is easier though, try doing radio commentary  !

True, but did anyone see the game aired on CBC at 7:00am EST between Zhang Ning and Mia Audina? That was pretty bad commentating and they commentated like the viewers were utter newbs as though they've never seen badminton before (which is probably true :p)
Anyway, it's great TSN is FINALLY airing some badminton. But it sucks because I'm busy at ALL those times... Thursday is school (2:30 pm est) for me and if it's only a half hour, I won't make it in time to watch :( . The Saturday one is like in the middle of the day when I'm out playing badminton practicing for tourny and sunday... if that's REALLY 1:30 am... then I'm scared if it's 4:30 am EST lol.

yah, i watched (ZN vs MA), it was ~ 5am here. Volume was on but i didnt pay attention to the commentator, I can see what's going on. The big plus is when it's on cbc live, it was super clear compared to tapes and encoded disks, i can see the beads of their sweat.

I was watching it with Satellite TV on a 65" TV teehee. MA was pretty close in that game but at the end, ZN pulled away and made it look pretty easy.
Too bad TSN is using the World Juniors only as fillers though =/ I hope in the future they might air it for longer than 1/2 hour.

I could be wrong. Could it be that this is the only show? There is only one same show and not a series of different shows. They show it on different dates but it doesn't mean that we are going to see different shows. I mean they could have summarized the whole things into one show.
(Just checked back from the Ontario badminton website)
It looks like they are the same.
The first scheduled time is Sunday, April 03 at 9:30am
