well ... i dont know about you guys but ... when i smash, sometimes i would make a grunt before smashing. Like a sharp "HUP!" you know what i mean ? is that legal ? or is that considered as distracting your opponents ?

lol one of my friends does that but he only does it for a smash in a game but when were just rallying with people we will both do that for alot of the shots, just a grunt then hit it. but yeah i also make a sound like that when i smash (even louder than my friends grunts), i just find that it lets me let it all loose and put all my power behind the smash.

But the opponent CAN call the umpire if he/she thinks you are distracting him/her.

I think I make quite a loud grunt when I lunge for a shot.
I remember watching something on TV about tennis players, and some medical person (I forget what profession) said you could be in danger of rupturing your diaphragm if you tried to hold the grunt in. I think they mentioned Seles and V Williams.
Would an umpire really consider a claim that my grunting put my opponent off?

I think it is legal. I also think moaning is legal too.

wont it be a bit boring if ur not allowed to scream n call for ur shots lol
I don't think you can be called for grunting when you are hitting your shots!
What is a fault is if you shout or grunt as your oponent is making their shot.
In other words you can't put them off if you are hitting the shuttle on your side whilst you grunt or shout but you can put them off if they are hitting the shuttle on their side and you make a noise which is considered loud.

i agree with Dill. also, you can think about this: players are allowed to call the bird so that his/her partner would know they are getting it, such as a clear to you and you call "mine!" so that your partner knows... i'm sure everyone knows this is legal, and i think "mine!" would be louder than a grunt / war cry (well, maybe not the war cry lol :D ) anyways, yeah... i think you can understand my point through my comparison.

I'm pretty sure that grunting before a smash is legal.
But I was wondering about this senario
I: do a bad lift (I know whats coming so I just sorta grunt "ahh bad lift")
Opponent: runs up and smashes into the net.
Of course I don't do it on purpose but is it legal??
Thanks^^:D

i would like to know that too:p cuz when i do a bad lift of i accidentally lift it to the middle of the court (when i'm suddenly indecisive of where to place the bird) and i say "crap!" and usually my opponents mess up :D i think it would be appreciated by many to get an answer to this scenario/situation.
manduki, are you in high school? if so, where? pm me if you cant actually post it along with a response.

The IBF rules states that it is a fault to distract your opponents.
It's a fault:
13.5 if, in play, a player deliberately distracts an opponent by any action such as shouting or making gestures;
It does not state that this has to happen only when your opponent is about to make a shot. It could be you shouting "OUT" and then taking your shot at the very last minute when your opponent could have been distracted and stop playing.
Usually the Umpire will notify the offending player that telling the offending player, "You distracted your opponent".

what?! you serious?! or maybe it means like.... well maybe only i dont do this, but i only call it 'out' if my partner is to hit the bird. for example, i would think that it's illegal if YOU call it out and YOU hit the bird last minute, but i wouldn't agree taht it's a fault if your PARTNER is about to the get bird, you tell them it's out, they look carefully at the landing spot, and hit the bird last minute. so maybe you should ask for clarification on specific situations.
a more specific and common example: you're playing doubles; your opponent does a short serve to your partner; to you it looks short and you yell out "short!"; your partner hears you but watches carefully where it would land, and hits the bird last minute before touching the ground.
in this situation, i think it's legal. if it lands in, i think it should be the fault of the opposing team for not being ready/prepared.

I think you misunderstand me and also the example given might not be the best. In your example, if your opponents are obviously distracted by your call, then it would be considered a fault.
For example, your partner is about to take the clear and you run around the court waving your waves (making no sounds) and your opponents are distracted, wondering what in the hell you were doing. That would be a fault to you and your partner. (BTW, this did happen in a game that I played in and because it was a friendly, we didn't bother calling it but my partner and I was wondering what the heck was going on because the guy was jumping and pretending to smash in the front left court while the shuttle was actually in the back right corner).

i guess it depends how easily distracted u r, pros play in stadiums with specetators screamin n shoutin all the time, done see they miss any shots =) Specially when they play along side another court.

But this is a common senario where the person in the front jumps and mis-swings on purpose and the person in the back smashes/hits.

Again, please note that shuttle wasn't even close to (near) the player in front. The shuttle was high and deep in the back court and only one person can get it (i.e. his partner).
The intent here was not an attempt to play the shot & missed but rather an attempt to distract.

Lol, you know i always thought Badminton was the a quiet sport untill i went to the All England Open a couple of weeks ago. It was so noisy. I thought they would at least say Quiet please before the players started a point. Nothing. Sometimes there was huge shouting during the points themselves. I have to say the Chinese supporters di make the most noise! lol.

This thread has gone a weird direction:rolleyes:. Its gonna keep me up all night!!! jks. So we've established that breathing loudly is indeed legal under the discretion of the referee(?) right? But for things like the Pre-ROPSAA, there isnt going to be judges at every court is there?
