Welcome onboard Miyuki! :)
Japan is a strong badminton country but we hear very little of your clubs and badminton stars, except when they participate in GP events. We need someone like you from Japan, who can communicate in English, to tell us more.
Why not start off by telling us how long you have been playing and more about badminton in your club, the days and time you play, who your teammates are and their level of play.
Now that the Japan Open is around the corner, wonder what your thoughts are? Which Japanese players do you think can give the others a good fight?
Hope to hear more from you soon. :D

Hi Miyuki!
I would love to play at your club sometime! Do you know how to use the private message function? If you could send me your mail or keitai address we could meet up later this summer. I am a student in Canada right now but I will be back in tokyo in august. Also, maybe you could help me find a good club in Chiba-ken?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi, Loh.
Sorry not to introduce me and our club.
My son was cring then:crying:
Now , He was sleeping. So I introduce me and our club.
About me,
I have played badminton for 18 years .
But last year, I couldn't play it becouse of my pregnant.
I begun to do it last month again and play it once or twice a week.
I don't know how to say my level.
I won the championship in Kinki District of a member of society five years ago.
But now I can't do smash becouse my abdominal muscles has gone:p hehe..
I have to train my abdominal muscles before playing it hard.
About our club,
Day Sat. Sun. National holliday(it depends on the school schedule)
Time 6:30-9:00pm
Place junior high school in Kawasaki
Level intermediate or upper
I made this club for training last month.
You know, I need a badminton training now.
If you want to join here, please PM me.
There are some good site to find a place where you play badminton in Japan, but I have never seen the English site .
Almost Japanese can read and write in English.
So when you join a Japanese club, you need a pen and a note to talk with many Japanese:p

Anyway , I'll help you to find them.
When you PM me, please tell me more details .

Hi. Loh.
I forget to say...
:) Happy birthday :)
How was the great day?
You played badminton on your special day, didn't you?:D
Oh, Thank you very much. :p
It was yesterday actually but I had a quiet day in the office. Then I went to my Club to attend a sports meeting and after that, at about 8 pm, I joined my Club choir in singing! Unfortunately no Japanese songs, but we have some songs in Malay, Thai, Filippino and Chinese other than English ones.
But this evening I will play some badminton with my colleagues. Actually last Friday, our Club had a friendly match with another club of which I am also a member. My partner and I lost our doubles match, but all my other teammates won their matches with one draw: 5 men's doubles and 2 mixed doubles altogether. :D
It is good that you get back to playing badminton after giving birth. I can understand the urge in you since you have been playing for 18 years! Do you bring your son to the club so that he can watch you play? Does your husband play badminton too?
Hope you like the pics of our friendly match last Friday:
Sayorana ? :)
Miyuki

Hi, Loh
Thank you for the pics of our friendly match .
They look nice and fun. After seeing the pics, I wanted to play badminton as soon as possible. Now I cook a baby food for my son;)
Yes, I bring my son who is 7months old to the club. My husband plays it , too.
We take care of him by turns.
I joined my Club choir in singing! Unfortunately no Japanese songs, but we have some songs in Malay, Thai, Filippino and Chinese other than English ones.
Do you like to sing? In Japan, we say "KARAOKE" as we sing a song in a shop.
I like some English songs ... woops, this site is badminton forum ,not singing forum:p hehe...
I have a friend in Singapole. To my regret,He is not badminton player.
I want to go there someday. Badminton is popular in there?
I use "MATANE" instead of "SAYOUNARA"
I feel "matane" is more friendly than "sayounara"
But "sayounara" is correct and polite Japanese:)

Thanks Miyuki, i think that website will be helpful for me :D
Well i guess it doesnt matter what kind of english teacher i want to be. I guess high school you will need a higher education? But i like to be both high school and conversation teacher. Depends on the education level i guess. I'm about to finish my TEFL certificate which allows me to teach overseas, but i know some schools need at least a bachelor's degree too? But im not sure if it is a good time to go to japan, because of the China and Japan relationship. I'am not japanese, I'am chinese, but Canadian born. I'am also learning japanese too, which will be helpful when i go to japan.
but yes, hopefully i get to go soon, I'd like to play with new people in badminon :D

Firstly, thanks for the comprehensive information.
Hope to make more friends & keep fit while enjoying badminton. Used to play about once a week. Probably intermediate level doubles play. Speak/read/write Japanese for survival only. Will stay in Tokyo (Ikebukuro) until end of May.
Musashikosugi Eki is not far. Will be able to find Nakahara junior high school on the internet. Since the Golden Week is coming soon, I will have more free time. If there is vacancy, please let me know the next badminton session. By the way, I have only cross-training shoes (no court shoes) & will need to borrow/rent a racquet.
If you need further details, I can send them to you via Private Message in order not to bore everybody.....

Hi Miyuki,
On May 25, 26 and 27 I'll visit Nara. Is there any place to play badminton around there? I think Osaka will be too far and I am looking for a place closer to Nara. I'll be in Tokyo on May 24, but I will be too busy with business to play in the Tokyo area.
Sorry to bother you, but most Japanese badminton clubs do not have much English on their websites.
Thanks -- Gerard

Hi Miyuki,
I am a B level player. The most convenient time for me to play would be the afternoon/evening of Wednesday May 25. Also possible are the evening of Friday May 27, or Saturday morning May 28.
I will be staying close to both the JR and Kintetsu Nara stations. I do not speak/read Japanese, but I have travelled in Japan a lot, so I can travel to any station to meet people.
I prefer to play doubles (I can play singles, but I am getting too old and slow). I will bring my shoes and clothes, but I will not bring a racket and shuttles. I will be in Hong Kong and China before Japan and carrying a racket is too inconvenient.
I have no other requirements. I have played in many countries in many different conditions. I adapt my play to any racket/shuttle/floor/ligthing. I won't have time to play in Hong Kong or China this time, so I hope you can help me with finding a place in near Nara.
Thanks -- Gerard

Thank you for replaying me.
I see . It is inconvenient for you to bring rackets to other country as your business trip. I hope somebody make a conpact badminton racket for trip.
And I have question more.
*You said that you are too old and slow. Tell me your age like 30's, 40's ...
*If you have cell phone in Japan, tell me the number. If not , I want to know how to contact with you. ex:your e-mail address ,or a hotel number.
*Is it far for you about 1 hour trip from Nara?
I know a club in Osaka. It takes 50min. from Nara st.They have a racket for borrow. Moreove I may go there and play it with you:)
*Where will you go after badminton on Saturday morning.
If you go back to Tokyo by Shinkansen(super express), you use the Shinosaka st. or Kyoto st..Which is better for you to play it near Nara or Kyoto or Osaka?
*Tell me your country name. Most Country names are defferent
pronounciation between Japanese and English. So I don't know your location:confused:
I am sorry to ask a lot.
But I want to find you a confatable place to play in Japan.

Hi Miyuki,
Thanks for arranging my play in Nara last night. I had a lot of fun playing badminton (and drinking beer and sake afterwards). Lucky for me they let me win all my games. This is because they gave me the best player as doubles partner. Anyways thank you very much for the arrangements. May be next time I am in Tokyo we can play together, or next time you get to San Francisco I can show you many places to play. Please consider coming to the World championships in Anaheim in August. I can meet you there.
Thanks -- Gerard

Hello Miyuki-san,
I have just arrived in Tokyo last week. I am an avid player of badminton since last year and am wondering if I can join your club in Nakahara. I know Nakahara a bit since I lived in Musashi Kosugi area for 3 years before but I am not sure where Nakahara junior high school is.
I will appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dennis,
I just came from the Windsor racquet shop in Shibuya tonight. They have a clearance sale until end of July. They have all the goods for badminton. It's quite easy to get there. Again, thanks to Miyuki-san for the link from the Nakahara badminton club site. Yonex shoes are going at around 50% off (last year model). They are open up to 8pm. Yonex armortec 800 and Nanospeed 8000 are around Y17,000.

Thanks for the map. I finally got it. I actually went last Saturday and found Nakahara high school. Unfortunately, no one was around when I got there (6.30pm or so). I waited for a bit to no avail. It's probably not my day to play badminton :-(
Will there be a game this Saturday? Which part of the school is the badminton court? I saw the basketball court with lights on but no one was there.

I was lucky and arrived in Narita after the earthquake which I saw on CNN when I checked into the East 21 hotel (Toyo, Koto-ku, Tokyo). Thank you for asking - it looked like a pretty substantial quake (7.5). What really got to me was the video clip with the child who was walking around with a bandaged left cheek and I continue to hope and pray that everyone is ok.
I will check out the website link and see if I can get there over the weekend.

Hi Miyuki san,
I am a big badminton fan. I am from China, working in Singapore right now and going to stay in Japan for 1 year. Could you help me to look for a club to play badminton? Any help will be greatly appreciated.:-)
My level is intermediate, I can play any day in the evening. I am going to be at Ibaraki-shi,Osaka. It is not a big city, so I am not sure if there is any badminton club there. But I am willing to travel if it is not too far from Ibaraki-shi.
Thank you and my email is emailchao@gmail.com

Hi,
Welcome to Tokyo:D
Tell me your badminton level. Do you have a racket and a pair of shoes for badminton?
You know, it is humid in Tokyo now. Almost club use a gym in a school. There are not some air conditioner in the gyms. So it is very hot and humid in a gym. Is it OK?

Hello Miyuki, thanks for your prompt reply :)
regarding my level, I've been playing for 3 years in my club in France, but never played in any tournaments. I play doubles and singles, and I love both. I'm definitely not a beginner anymore, and I'm getting back to a decent fitness level thanks to my gym. I love competitive games, with people who really mean playing. I did bring one of my rackets with me from Paris, and I also have my shoes, so that makes me ready to play I guess :p
Regarding the weather, well, that's expected isn't it? I'll give it a shot, and I'll see how it goes... No air conditionning in my local gym either, and it does get pretty hot too these days...

Dear Miyuki,
I hope you still view this forum as I can see you have been very helpful to other people in my position.
I will come to Japan for 2 or 3 years from 1st September. I will live near Seijo and will work near Musashi Kosugi.
I noted that you play(ed?) at a club near Musashi Kosugi? It is still going?
Any advice about where to play would be great.

Hi, Alex
There are 2 shops in Shibuya. Thier websites are as following.
They have some branches. So check "渋谷” in the website.
*Windsor
http://www.windsorracket.co.jp/shop/shop_shibuya.html
5 minutes from Shibuya station for a walk
*Wembley
http://www.bps-wembley.com/
1 minutes from Shibuya station for a walk
There is a police station next to Hachiko exit on Shibuya station. Ask them with their map or address when you are lost. You can find them easily.

Hi to all members of this forum..first i want to introduce myself, i'm Chris from Makuhari-cho, Chiba. I'm a Filipino working here in Japan. My colleagues have suggested we find a place to play badminton, and so i browse the internet and i ended up in this forum which i think will become very informative...what caught my attention was Miyuki-san's tireless efforts in helping forum members fit in with their respective locations and i wish Miyuki-san can help me too in finding a place where we can play badminton...and hoping we can play with her too. You have a nice forum here..keep up the good work guys and gals.

Hi Miyuki,
I am Thomas Taro, half japanese, living in Sweden. I will be in Tokyo from 24/12 2007 to 11/1 2008. Can I play badminton with you during this period? Also, I wonder if you can recommend any clubs with training weekdays between 24/12 to 11/1..
About me: I train in a club in Stockholm 2-3 times a week + competitions maybe 2 times a month. I have played for around 10 years. I like both singles and doubles. I speak japanese, but not very good - no practice in Sweden :(

It takes 30min from Azabu-juban to our nearest station by train.
Some non-Japanese said to me that they want to play on that period.
If it is possible, I hope that we all play together:)

Ah, how I wish that I was back in Japan again. The clubs ( and some members ) here in NewZealand are terrible.. very arrogant and unhelpful. Expensive too.. I loved how in Japan, everyone welcomed me, gave me a discount ( 500yen -> 300yen :D), and also the fact that there were practise/training sessions and free tea/snack breaks too..

Haha, I heared on some minkanhousou tv programme a while ago that Kansai has the 'best services', which I believe is really true. I was quite suprised when I first visited the club. People stopped and greeted me, 'ohayougozaima-su!' and the organisers quickly rushed over to me and introduced everything, as if they were expecting me to come or something :D.

hello all...
I found shinjuku sports center with the help of Miyuki San a several months ago. I went for a while, but because of work I haven't gone for a while. But I went to today to get a schedule. I want to start going again on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Saturday nights...
It's not so fun to have nobody to play with, would anyone here like to play?

The nearest station is Kumazawa Daigaku of Den-en-Toshi line. If you are interested, I plan to go there this Saturday and we can meet at the station. PM me if you want.

I would like to play the badminton somewhere close to my appartment. I played badminton for many years. I have not played for a couple of months and I really want to get back to it.
Important thing: I do not speak Japanese (I am learning but I am still a beginner)... I guess this won't help.

Hi Miyuki,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I can play anytime, as I am waiting for my visa to be organized. So I have lots of free time.
I played all the way through school and University. But I haven't played for 3 years now. I was a team player in England. I'm not to sure what the standard is to be honest. Probably experienced average.
I would be traveling by train or bus at the moment.
My nearest station is Fukuyama station, it is Hiroshima prefecture.
Thanks for your help

Dancestar

Important :crying:
It is very important to note that the system in Japan is not very good for badminton.
When I say not good I mean NOT USER FRIENDLY for badminton.
I recommend not to take Miyuki's advice as the last word as to how to play and enjoy badminton in Tokyo.
Most courts are overly managed and there are no club facilities and dedicated courts for badminton except for maybe a couple embassy's (to the best of my knowledge).
Japanese courts are well maintained but they are very picky about indoor shoes. You cannot leave your door and expect to play in those same shoes. Be sure to bring your indoor gym shoes in a separate bag. They will check it at most facilities.
Courts are mostly public city/ward courts
or courts on elementary school courts on evenings and weekends.
Public courts usually have no system. If you go by yourself you may not get a chance to play. I know even in the US, if you are waiting on the court either by yourself or a pair or 4 of you after the previous game is finished the next group comes on. This is not the case in Japan.
If you do not know someone they will be hesitant to play with you and allow you join their court.
If there is a coordinator (shido-in) they often use a lotto system and in this case in particular you will find it difficult to find someone to play with (of your level in particular).
The challenge system is virtually unheard of here.
Most public courts are monopolized by a single club:eek:
The elementary school courts are usually small clubs. The clubs have a coordinator that may or may not arrange matches according to level.
Sometimes they have dues or you may just pay every time. Most do not allow anyone that they don't know but I suggest you ask if you can join.
What to do!?
I recommend to try making friends with a few clubs. Clubs are limited to days they have access to facilities. The facilities rotate the schedule amongst other activities, clubs and groups so they usually only have fixed days. The more clubs you have a relationship with the better.
Try to make as many local badminton friends as possible as soon as possible.
Go to courts in pairs or groups of 4. Japan rarely allows singles play. Only in very early hours of the session or the last 10 min.
Find a group where foreigners are active. Chinese, Malay, etc are avid players and usually congregate at the more friendly clubs.
If you need specific recommendations please send me a message. I can recommend places where the level is pretty advanced near Shinjuku that has a very open environment.

Dancestar,
where are you playing?
Atleat in Nerima ku where i am playing regularly for the last one year, i like the system they manage the courts. I agree if you are alone its difficult to get a slot or join with the groups already playing. In Nerima ku public gyms they release the games schedule before 2 months. check the schedule and go there with your group(atleast 2 members) and they allot slots first come first serve. depending on the facility its either one hour slot or 3 hours slot. If you can go early you are sure to get the slot.

Hi Nrappa,
I play at the genki-kan in Shinjuku (Okubo/Takadanobaba) amongst various places.
Thank you for mentioning the rental of courts. I forgot touch on this. I have not done this myself but the clubs I attend do that regularly.
But I do know that certain slots are usually monopolized as various clubs have their fixed days.
I know this because my club is there every week, same time, same place. Reason is because it has been pre-negotiated with the other clubs. It is extremely hard to grab any of these fixed time slots.
nrappa
09-23-2009, 11:05 PM
>>But I do know that certain slots are usually monopolized as various clubs have their fixed days.
even we can form a team with atleast 10 members(atleast 5 members living in the same ward where the facility is located) and register the team, we can apply for the time slots. If there are no other teams applying during the same time slot you are usually allotted the time slot.In case there are more than one team applying for the same time solt they pick the draw. May be in that genki-kan gym no other badminton club is active or they are working with mutual understanding:)
In my office we have footsal team and i came to know about this process from them.

Hi, this is miyuki.
I understand what you said.
About indoor shoes, not only for badminton. When we play Other sports, we also need a indoor shoes. It is a culture, I think.
Some of badminton players are not friendly. But others are kind and helpful.
There are many system and rules in a team. There is few courts only for badminton in Japan. But I didn't hear that there is in Tokyo.
We play in Shibuya with non-japanese from this forum and Japanese players.
There are any level from bigginer until advanced, I think we can enjoy to play together.
As you said, I also reccomend all people to make many local friends. When you go a club, you may not find a good person. But I don't want you all to give up to find new place. and communicate with them.
Actually some Japanese may not be friendly. But it isn't only for non-Japanese. When I came to Tokyo, it is also difficult for me to find a good place and good badminton friends.
When you have time, come to join us in Shibuya on Saturday night.
maybe not so bad, I believe.
Best regards

Most people playing badminton in Japan are friendly.

Winner stay system is not used on any courts in Japan.

Challenge system is not used on any courts in Japan.

Hi, Dancestar
1.Winner stay system
I have never seen the Winner stay system in Japan.
2.Challenge system
Challenge system is a system which lower level player challenge to upper level player?
Almost people play with a same level or upper level players. When Upper level players teach badminton to Lower level players, they play together. But if you don't have a friend or a coach as upper level, it is difficult to play with upper players. because they also want to play with same or upper level players. If you want to play with strong player, had better to participate a tounament, and make a friend who is stronger than you.
3.Singles
If there are not so many people, some people play singles.
If there are many people, it is difficult to play Singles.
There are many tounament for doubles, but there is a few Singles tounament. Many Japanese players play not only for their helty life , but also for win the touanaments. So they play doubles a lot.
I think you can play singles if you can choice the time and the place.
Or you lental a court in a public elementary school around your place, you can make a Singles badminton team.
I can't say that they aren't user friendly. The gym and clubs believe that it is user friendly for their system. If all courts are winner system, it is also not user friendly. Almost Japanese players don't know winner system and challenge sysytem as you said. So if you have many friends, you can give the idea to the gym and courts.
If Many players feel the systems are better than current system, they use the systems, I think.
(sometimes old stone-head players don't want to change...)
Our club are many non-japanese players. but none of them said to me the system.
I will try the winner system. If almost players want this system, we should take a better system.
I just wrote as I felt.
Thanks for reading

Hi, Miyuki:
thanks for helping me out.:p
I would like to go to Shibuya to see you and your club overthere.
However, I did not bring any racket with me to Japan. I have tried to buy 1 racket for a short term usage. I went to Wembley and Winsor in Ikebukuro, but I have found nothing. Also, I went to Kawagoe Sport shop. All shops do not sell Sotx rackets here. I only found those Yonex/Wilson/Gosen new models with over-priced tags. Why nobody sell low price with high quality rackets like Victor, Sotx...here in Japan? I have broken too many Yonex rackets already(more than 10). I am not a Yonex fan any more. :crying:
I have also tried the Sekaimon(ebay in Japan) and Amazon in Japan. I could not find any racket I want.
So, may be I just give up to play in Japan(well still good for visiting).
Thank you, Miyuki. You are such good(kind-heart) person like to help peoples who you do not even know.
Thank you.:)

Hi,Bruno
Sorry for late reply.
I didn't know the brand of Sotx.
If you want to need a low price racket, I saw some Victor in a sports department.
If you come to Shibuya, the gym borrow you a racket. So you only bring your shoes for indoor.
If you are OK to buy used racket, My friend said he can sell a gosen racket as 3000JPY. He used it , but he start playing other sports instead of badminton. So he sold his racket to his friends.
Anyway, Don't need to give up to play in Japan:D

I am leaving Japan tomorrow and going back to Boston. If you have chance to come to Boston, you are invited to our club to play badminton.
www.maugus.com (http://www.maugus.com)
Next time, if I come here to Japan again, I will bring my rackets. This time I got no exercise at all. I came here first time for 18 days without any exercise and just eating, hot spas, sleep, sightseeings...then gained some pounds.
Fun, fun, fun, by the way.
Sayonara,
Bruno

Hi,Remo
Thank you for your comment.
I have been here for 5 years. I belieave that I could reply a mail to all people once at least.
It was hard for me to make and type sentenses in English. It took 1hours to make 3 lines sentenses 5 years ago. I could improve my English level because all people here help me as a English teacher, haha.
Actually,I couldn't help a few cases.Especially, when I was too busy in my work. I hope more people help newcomer in Japan with me.

Though I have never lived there, Matsudo is good area to play badminton. According to the city's badminton association web site, they just had Matsudo Open(named "Azalea Open" on Dec 23rd) and it seems they have tournaments almost every month !! Check this site and you had better contact city's badminton association and get club info. Good luck.
http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~matsudo_badminton_association/schedule.html (http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/%7Ematsudo_badminton_association/schedule.html)
Here is a list of registered badminton clubs in Matsudo, some of which have their web site links. Hope you can read Japanese.:o

Thanks alot!
i will check out the pages :)
sadly i cant read katakana or kanji yet, but i got some friends that can translate it for me :)
How is the level on badminton?
ToyotaLexus
12-25-2009, 08:51 PM
There seems to be four or five levels in each tournaments. So unless you are a national champion or professional, you will not have trouble to find your suitable level, I'm sure.:D
However,
As you are staying in Japan just for a month or so, my anxiety is that you may not be welcomed to join in local club team, and that there are not many places you can play walk-in basis. You had better contact Miyuki-san or somebody to be ready to play as soon as you arrived.
F.Y.I. on Feb 14th they will have tournament(individual) and its deadline is Feb 3rd, to which you may join without being belonged to a club team.

In Japan, Year End and New Year's last/first week are crazy busy and irregular schedules in business/school/private/local, so is badminton club.
If you cannot search Japanese badminton club info(mostly written in Japanese) by yourself right now, it's hard for you to play during the week of Jan 8th. If you can read Japanese, it is easy to find through web site. Here are a few of them;
http://www.h2.dion.ne.jp/~tak70/ (http://www.h2.dion.ne.jp/%7Etak70/)
http://www.shibuya-badminton.ne.jp/club.htm
If you cannot read/speak Japanese, at least you should have somebody in Japan who can help you to contact to clubs before your arrival. I'm not your person as I'm not in Japan.:(
From Shiba-Koen, you can access to a place not only in Minato-ku district, but also in the other 22 districts easily by bus/train/subway. So you have more than a hundred options to choose a place to play. But you had better hurry. Good luck.:)

Play badminton is better. Miyuki is definitely an advance player. So, for those who want to join her. Please make sure you are at advance level. Else, you'll embarass yourself as you may need to wait for your games longer. For those really advance player, you will enjoy. I've loaded the videos into youtube. Just search of badminton in japan.

Hi, I'm an international student and looking for friends to play badminton with. I live near Yokohama city. Any intermediate badminton circle around Yokohama? If anybody knows please tell me. Willing to play on weekdays too, night or evening. Credit to Miyuki san for initiated this useful, informative forum.
One read somewhere in this forum asked about racket. I used to be Yonex fan but now I used APACS because they are cheap and very good quality. You can even find apacs fan in this badminton forum....ops, out of topic.
