Olympic stars lead England bid

Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson
Emms and Robertson won silver at the Athens Olympics
Olympic silver medallists Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms are among the 15 players named in England's squad for the 2005 Sudirman Cup in Beijing.

National champion Elizabeth Cann is the only female Sudirman Cup rookie with Nick Kidd, Kristian Roebuck and David Lindley also getting first call-ups.

The Sudirman Cup world mixed team badminton championships takes place from 10-15 May.

England begin their campaign against Denmark on 10 May.

They will then meet holders Korea on 11 May with their final group match coming against Thailand on 12 May.

England will be aiming to retain their place in the First Division just as they did in Eindhoven in 2003, when Robertson and Emms remained unbeaten throughout.

The team will be led by manager John Quinn.

England team for Sudirman Cup: Simon Archer, Robert Blair, Anthony Clark, Aamir Ghaffar, Nicholas Kidd, Nathan Robertson, Kristian Roebuck, David Lindley, Elizabeth Cann, Gail Emms, Tracey Hallam, Donna Kellogg, Natalie Munt, Ella Trip and Joanne Wright.

Was thinking the same thing :) I had expected Nathan Rice to be in there at least. Then again it's not likely they'll get any MS points so it would make more sense to take doubles players instead.

Its look like England team had a realistic aim. They just want to stay in group 1 and probably for Nathan and Emms, try not to lose any match. Probably this will relax them and they can play all out and trouble other team in their groups.

IN BRIEF

BADMINTON… England have suffered a setback in their preparations ahead of the Sudirman Cup, after Simon Archer was forced to withdraw from the squad for the World mixed team championships in Beijing. The Olympic mixed doubles bronze medallist from Sydney 2000 underwent minor surgery on his right knee, which has ruled him out. His place goes to David Lindley, who was already in the squad as back up to Archer. More @ www.badmintonengland.co.uk
