VRC (Vancouver Racquets Club) is a badminton/squash club with fitness centre, pro shop, and restaurant. I've been on the waiting list since last Oct :D

What you see there is the door key, shoe tag, and parking sticker.

I'll probably visit the gym though maybe Sunday.

-dave

You can always use your electronic pass at 12:01am Sunday!

I'll bet, even if the door was open, you would let it shut, flip out your pass from your pocket like a gun-slinger at the OK-Corral!!!

*oooo OOOOO oooooo waaa WAAA waaaaaa* (theme song from The Good, Bad & The Ugly)

The rusty gym doors at local VRC saloon are blasted open by a gust wind. All the Badders inside quickly dropped their rallies and stared at the one and only exit out of this shuttle-ridden saloon, and all the while, standing there shaking & shivering like they've just downed 3 bottles of their local firewater (remember Cappy75)

As the broken feathers clear, a veteran racquet-slinger, wearing the latest CAB-shooter strapped to his shoulder, stops at the door, slowly scans the entire gym from left to right. He takes a sniff of the air, chuckles and smirks as he walks towards the center of the gym, for he senses mass hysteria & fear.

Badders waiting to get on the court, scamper aside like cockroaches caught with the lights on. Some quickly take their racquets off the sign-up rack in fear of the stranger wanting to add his shooter onto their foursome, while others offer new shuttles to the veteran racquet-slinger as a bribe in hopes he will not force his ways onto their games.

(to be continued...)

Ha-ha. You remember Indiana Jones (forgot which one). This one dude did this fancy routing with a sword for about a couple minutes. Jones just took out his gun and shoots him.

I'll bet a huge percentage of VRC players'll do that to me!

The VRC is what you choose to make of it. Some consider it a second home. (although there is a creepy member who I swear uses the club as his first home - the same fellow who practices nude yoga in the mens locker room).
The only consideration I suggest to you is to avoid making cost comparisons to playing at drop-ins or other centers. I often find that members who do that will totally miss seeing the benefits of the club. In other words, you are a VRC member, and it offers you certain use privileges. Enjoy them, and be a good member!

See you on the court sometime... (I am nursing yet another ankle injury sustained while attempting to avoid running into my doubles partner. Cappy knows who I am talking about...)

Man, how my perspective changed in over just a few months! The first two months of my summer membership, I was literally penny pinching:o. Now, I pay the membership first before everything else:eek:! VRC is the best place to play around lower mainland. It really helps to be friendly with people at the club. It can be really lonesome for members trying to drop-in by themselves. Also notoriety can be quite a burden for one to carry in such a tight knit community:rolleyes:. So be careful whose shoes you step on;).

Thanks for the advice, badrad/cappy75. Looking forward to my time at VRC.

Visited the gym last night (not well enough for baddy yet). It's a little small, leans toward exercise machines rather than free weights. On the plus side, it's cozy and not crowded at all. I hope with the (rumor) expansion, the gym'll be upgraded with more free-weights for back, legs, chest exercises.

No wonder the changing room's benches are sticky sometime. :D :D :D Cappy75 had a close call with that glue-like substance  . I will tell ya. That dude who always practise nude yoga has an interesting hobby. Just wonder what else he does when no one is around.

Was your double partner the one who almost chopped off little badrad's hand?

You guys sound like a terrific bunch. I live in Victoria and travel to Vancouver once in awhile and hope to meet up with fellow BCers/BFers sometime. Now, I know VRC is a private club but, does it feature special days for non-members or Guest Days or Guest privileges for non-members. I would like to check out the club the next time I'm in town. Can someone provide some info or advise where I can obtain the info...:)

so i was reading the VRC website about guest privs and they mentioned something called social guests... what does that mean? people who come to watch but not play?

cappy75
05-05-2005, 06:35 AM
Yup! Dunno if you could last the whole night just watching us play:p. Most visitors would rather shell out the $10 for a game or two than agonise over exciting games while sitting on the side benches:D. Also, the drop-in fee allow you to use all the facilities... shower and changing room as well as the gym.

Be careful, this is the typical VRC TRAP!!!

1st, they let u know how much fun and give u a warm welcome. Then, u will see 20+ BFers (even non BFers) waiting in line for u. With several consecutive matches, ur arm will be sore and legs are cramping, etc. hehehheheh... at least, with my lowly skill and absolute no endurance, that's what happened. :o

Of course, that's a joke. Come and visit VRC when u get a chance, u will get a great night of workout with exciting games, and tons of great ppl around. That's totally worth the $10 from ur wallet. :)

I'm Dave, and I'm a VRC-a-holic, ha-ha ... There's a BadmintonForum group that plays Mon, Wed, Sat nights that start around 9 or 9:30pm and the always-friendly speed78 that organizes games, introduce newbies to other VRC members. So come on up and say hello.

You'll recognize me when my doubles partners get frustrated with my cross-court shots and start yelling at me! :D

Hey NotGood,

Welcome to VRC and also BF:)! How do we identify you? I think there's alot of Davids at VRC:D. Anyway, don't be shy to approach us. We usually gather near Court 4 and 5 where there's a corner along the benches. Also, most of us don't come in until after 9pm. So don't be surprise if you get puzzled stares from people when you tell them that you're NotGood:p. See you tomorrow night:).

Viver,

It's always a treat and an enlightening experience to have you with us. I am sure that all of us benefited from your wisdom and experience. I don't think I exaggerate when I say what I said before. First game in with you and Steve against me and Nephrus was tough as hell. There wasn't a dry spot on my Tees after that game:p. It's a miracle we didn't get blown away:D! Hey Dave dont get upsad; are you going to vrc this weekend night? I'll compliment you one :-)

wood_22_chuck
06-02-2005, 12:49 PM
Not upset at all, Marky! :D

So let's see. The good and the bad?

Sociability
From various sources before joining, I was made to understand that VRCians, in general, are a serious lot, and not very friendly. The quote in general were of the nature:

I played there for X number of years, and I didn't make friends aside from my playing partners

Now that I've joined up, it seems there's no shortage of people with friendly smiles, asking me how my day was, jokes etc. If I've met a person once or twice, and smile, I can count on a conversation with them the next time I see 'em.

Games
People join VRC to get serious about badminton. And it shows in the calibre of play at VRC compared to community centres that I frequent. I certainly know that private groups exist that congregate in private places everywhere in Vancouver, but getting invited to 'em is elusive.

VRC represents the best "open" environment for badminton, in my opinion.

Price
I use the gym, showers and lounge upstairs in addition to badminton, for a price of roughly CAD 60 or CAD 65 per month. The gym closes at midnight, while badminton is 24 hours.

If I visit a community centre twice a week for a drop-in fee of CAD 5 per visit, that's CAD 40 per month. But that's for 2 hours of baddy on fixed days at fixed times. I'd have to pay extra for gym.

It's works out for me to join VRC, as the quality of games I get at VRC far surpasses that I can get at community centres, on the whole.

The Bad
PeteLSD won't see me a Ti-10 for CAD 50, no matter what!

Errrr, who am I to refuse? :D But there's NO WAY anybody's touching this ankle till the soreness goes away! Damn thing was THROBBING at 3:30 am and woke me up from sleep ... 2 ibuprofen (Advil) pills helped though.

Sprained ankles suck :(
Thanks for wishes, Pete! Friendly-bunch, the VRCians ... there was plenty of advice, two packs of ice, bench-space, badminton bags to rest my ankle on (raised! I might add) ....

Sure is a big difference from Kitsilano CC where I sprained my ankle BADLY, and the comment I got was "Are you done with the court then?"

Kudos to VRC! Sure was fun games last night though :D

Nah dude,

VRC is almost a close knit community comparing to other drop-in community centers. Everybody knows almost everybody else, so it's easier to help one another when we're in trouble. However VRC also has its shares of ass-holes. You're lucky to have injured yourself in the company of friends. Bad behaviours have a way of rebounding ten times faster (maybe it's karma:p) in VRC. Groups thrive at the club and there aren't many who lone-wolfed there;).

You should check out timeless' story about the time he severed his achilles tendon. Now that's true grit;). You haven't had it bad until you got screwed and abandoned by a stranger in the last game of the evening with no one around to help.

Another sad tale of terrible conduct by fellow badders: A friend of mine sprain something in his back while playing at Roundhouse, he must have hurt something after such a long absence from baddy. After waiting for a short time, the bastards who played with him basically pull him out to the courtside and continued playing with a replacement while he layed there motionless. My friend got stuck in a wheelchair for a while with his lovely GF (now fiancee:D) taking care of him for two weeks before he could walk again. Him, timeless and you are fortunate to have someone to give you TLC when you're down:).

By the way, for you late niters at the VRC. Emergency numbers are posted on the bulletin board.

The concern for member safety is also reason why the weight room, saunas and steam rooms are closed to members from midnite to 6am. The last thing we want is for a member to have a critical accident alone in the club in the dead of nite.

So remember, it's only for fun! Don't kill yourself in the wee hours at the club. Let your spouses do that when you crawl into bed in the middle of nite, with another lame excuse like "Honest - I really was playing with the gang at the club til 3 in the morning!". :crying:

Speaking of cuddle in safety and sleep over at VRC. There is this dude who does nude yoga in the men's changing room. This is what happened. On Monday night I did gym until 1:00 AM and saw Mr. Yoga (fully clothed of course) came to the fitness room's door. He couldn't get in as the door was locked. So I opened the door. He asked me if anyone from the pro-shop was still around to help him. I said not a chance. In the back of my mind, I swore that the pro shop closed down by 9:00 PM the latest. So he left and I went back to finish up my routine. At about 1:30 AM, I was on my way to the shower and bumped into Mr. Yoga. The guy headed up to second floor for reasons I didn't know. I speculated that he camped out in the lounge :D . Go figure.

BTW, no one was inside the building at that time, except Mr. Yoga and myself.

The Bad
In a semi-crowded gym, etiquette, politeness makes the gym environment more "fun" ... it's members that are extremely inconsiderate, non-courteous and downright rude that spoils the atmosphere.

Incidents like

reach down and grab the dumb-bells I'm working with next, while it's clearly off the rack and at the sides of the incline bench I'm on, while I'm still ON THE BENCH, and doing another workout
stepping within the reach of my barbell curls, forcing me to stop in mid-motion so I don't hit this person ... forcing me to step back so this person can PICK UP dumb-bells of the rack, when there's another rack free not 3 feet away.
said rude person doing bent-over-lateral raises with utter disregard to swinging the weights almost hitting another member on the next bench.

really turns me off, including other gym patrons, I'll have to say.

Being a provincial-level badminton player really bloats your head, I'll have to say, if these behaviour is acceptable to this person.
