Hello,
Does anyone use compression shorts when playing? Would it help? Are there any brands that are specific to badminton?
Thanks
CM
by compression shorts, do you mean the tight fitting shorts like the Lycra shorts people wear for cycling?
apologies for my ignorance.

i can't say anything about compression short, but when I used my compression top, It wasn't very good for badminton because it restricted my movements and I was prespiring more than usual.

Compression clothes are restrictive at first, but I find that they feel better after I get used to them. I prefer them to my poloshirts cuz they usually don't have uncomfortable collars to deal with and they stretch nicely when I reach for shots. Poloshirts short sleeves also tend to cling unevenly, so sometimes I would get distracted by them when I go for a smash. I do perspire more at the beginning but I would dry off as soon as I keep moving.
Have yet to play baddy in a lycra shorts, I wouldn't advise playing in a cycling shorts though:p. It sure won't feel comfortable with those 'extra paddings' when one stretches/lunges for a shot:D.

Yes, similar to the Lycra shorts - they are similar to cycling shorts but they do not have the padding - that's typically built into cycling shorts. The companies that manufacture them claim - it supports the muscles and reduces vibrations in the muscles - so the muscles do not get fatigued as quickly.
I started playing some singles badminton and thought these types of shorts might help with groin muscles and hamstring.
Thanks

PS: Typcially you wear your shorts over them. They are usually worn as underwear - although some people wear them as shorts

i have worn cycling shorts to play badminton before (long long story :o ) and it felt ok. cycling shorts are designed to allow leg movements and they are not too tight and thus not restrictive. i am not sure if compression shorts are heavier weight / more elastic material or not.

Not sure how they compare to cycling shorts - but more elastic material - the higher the compression and higher the price. So I guess you can pick amount of compression you are looking for.
So far looking at pro - badminton players I haven't seen anyone wearing it (from the videos I have downloaded). At the local provincial championship a couple of players were using it. But it appeared quite a few players were rubbing some sort of gels/ointment into their thighs during the breaks. Indicating quite few players were experiencing issues with leg muscles (actually I'm not that good - I experience a lot of strain after playing singles).
Thanks

After pulling hamstrings left and right, I weared compression shorts for the first time today. My unscientific assessment is that they really help. I think they keep the muscle or whatever together such the chance of pulling something around the hip is lowered.

I wear tights and long johns to play badminton and volleyball and have done so for years. A lot of Japanese players would wear stuff like this back in the old days. Even Dwayne Wade and other NBA players wear a lot of McDavid and Underarmor compression stuff. I have tried many brands and I find that really tight compression is too restrictive for me (maybe because now I am out of shape). Some of the new advertising says that it actually helps muscle memory, etc. I find it more comfortable than wearing track pants and suit and I need every ounce of wind resistant streamlining. They can get expensive though. A pair of Underarmor that is suitable for Badminton might cost $70. I went of Mountain Equipment Co-op for a pair and they also carry Champion at Target that are moisture wicking for $15.

They are just called "compression shorts", Under Armour and Nike ones are widely available. I think the ones on hangers provide more grip than those packaged in plastic boxes.

I've worn compression top and shorts for badminton. Not used to them at first. Actually played worse. Really have to get used to it then its alright.
They claimed to reduce fatigue but did not feel any difference.
One aspect i can say is, they wick off sweat from the body like magic. Especially good for those who sweat alot. In return you feel cooler.

Compression shorts are like Spandex but for guys.
As a soccer player I use them for every game and every cold day of practice because it really helps keep your thighs warm (reason #1). Compression shorts are also worn to keep a mans package from moving around too much while running (reason#2). (sorry tried to put it nicely) This is the reason why almost all soccer players wear compression shorts.
As for compression shorts for badminton. I have tried them for badminton, maybe its just because I'm used to how they feel, but they do not hinder or harm my game even the slightest bit. Even though there are no negative effects I don't think there are any positives that you can get from wearing them because courts are usually in a gym where it isn't too cold. And I haven't heard anyone complaining about (reason#2). And also they are quite expensive coming in at about 25$usd per pair, ALL FOR A PIECE OF FANCY UNDERWEAR!! One possible upside I can think of is if sweat ALOT and want to have not so sweaty thighs and bottom, the compression shorts are very breathable.
