Bid Cities: Madrid will host the 2006 IBF World Championships
Madrid, May 9th 2004
The 65th Annual General Meeting of the International Badminton Federation (IBF), held at the Jakarta Convention Centre (Indonesia), has decided that the city of Madrid will host the 2006 IBF World Championships. The Spanish city beat Aarhus (Denmark) for this championship, which will be staged on August of that year. Madrid –in the running for the 2012 Olympic Games- will also host Archery, Taekwondo and Cycling World Championships in 2005 and Fieldhockey Women World Cup in 2006.

Cheung 04-29-2005, 10:04 AM Just a little disappointed with the choice being in Europe again. I'm wondering what the strategic direction of the World Championships is. Perhaps the Seville one generated a lot of interest and IBF are trying to build on that.
Another theory would be IBF moving to KL makes badminton drift towards Asia too much. The World Championships in Europe or USA is an attempt to balance this out.

It changed because of the lack of Grand Prix Finals :(...Kinda makes it feel less prestegious :s

The World Championship is indeed going to be held in Madrid, Spain in September 06.
The country and venue of the World Junior Championship in July 06 is still to be announced.

i agree with you. It could be just another All England. Never seen a world championship for a same event being held 2 years in a row.
jamesd20 05-02-2005, 12:41 PM Rowing + Snooker have their world championships every year, am sure there are many more examples.
I am warming to the idea now after being initially opposed.

KourKK 07-10-2005, 08:43 PM I predict that at this tournament, Youngsters like Chen Jin/Pei Wei Chung/Lim Kenn will come into their full potential. Mark my words :D
Anyone know where is the venue for the 06 WC?
ctjcad 07-19-2005, 07:43 PM My guess is they will hold it at IFEMA exhibition park of Madrid, the proposed venue where they are supposed to have had it, if Spain would've gotten the bid for 2012..
Here's the link and under Related Sections, select a sport -> Badminton. Then after that, you will see a small pop-up and click on the Installation link...Once there, you will see the description and location of the place, which is located on Parque Juan Carlos I, No. 1, Madrid, Barajas...I believe they held the 2001 World Individual Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships and 2001 Tennis Federation Cup

Anyone know where is the venue for the 06 WC?
ctjcad 08-23-2005, 02:22 PM Update,
It will be held at Palacio de los Deportes, Madrid, Spain from September 18th-24th
Looks like it will be the same play format like the one held in Anaheim. With 4 events on the Finals being held on Sunday.
Season-ticket package starts at 150.00 EUR = 183.441 USD (highest price)
to 60.00 EUR = 73.3643 USD (lowest price)

Trance 08-23-2005, 05:31 PM What a strange place to host the World Champs....
I was planning to go the the 2006 World Champs, but I don't think I wanna go to Spain lol.
Kamikaze 08-23-2005, 05:52 PM spain, what a horrible location. i bet the running of the bulls will attract more spaniards than the wc '06.
madbad 08-23-2005, 06:27 PM Firstly, the selected location is probably in line with IBF's globalization strtegy. Secondly, I suspect the IBF is trying to appease the Olympic head honchos to keep the sport in the schedule.
DaN_fAn 08-24-2005, 12:00 AM Hmm...i doubt Spain would have won the bid to host the WC if it was known that London would win the bid.I think the IBF awarded the WC to Madrid coz it was a bid city. i would think Aarhus[Denmark] would make a better venue.Anyway i just hope that they do a lot prior to the WC and ensure a build up atleast this time..especially since it's in Spain.
ctjcad,is the venue made solely for Badminton?
BTW,are u gonna be an LO there?
ctjcad 08-24-2005, 11:24 AM It could be part of the globalization IBF is trying to promote. Esp. now, they are doing it yearly, instead of every 2 yrs. event.
As far as the place itself, i'm trying to find out the website of it. But from what i can find out, the place also hold music concerts and the likes. My guess it's quite similar to the Pond, a multi-purpose hall.
And will i go there and be an LO also??..Ehhhmm, no. Most likely not. Only if IBF or US Badminton asked me and willing to sponsor me, sure I'll think about it. :p And most importantly, if i go, i have to learn some Spanish first. :p As for the Indonesian team, I don't know who will be their LO/interpreter there, or will they be bringing in their own interpreter..

cooler 08-24-2005, 12:32 PM some one told me that 2007 WC will be held in Malaysia, is this correct?
ctjcad 08-24-2005, 03:15 PM Yes, that's correct...And the promotional materials will most likely be sent out next year in Madrid, Spain...And on that note, look for some Malaysian players' success..
I also met a couple of the IBF people and they said that they will be "laid-off" pretty soon because the office in England will be closed and moved to Malaysia soon. So this will be their last "big" assignment. Actually there are only about 11 or 12 IBF staff headquartered in England.
some one told me that 2007 WC will be held in Malaysia, is this correct?
seven 08-26-2005, 06:14 AM I think Madrid is a GREAT location personally! :D
No no, I'm not saying that because it's near my home... ;)
Anyway, I will be going to Madrid for sure, and I encourage all badminton fans who can to do so too! :)
Neil Nicholls 08-26-2005, 07:57 AM some one told me that 2007 WC will be held in Malaysia, is this correct?
So with Sudirman and World Champs gone to the East
will the Thomas Cup be coming back to the West ?
Of the 23 TC, 2 in the West, 21 in the East (last 11 in the East)
Of the 14 WC, 11 in the West, 3 in the East (last 8 in the West)
OF the 9 Sudirman, 7 in the West, 2 in the East (last 1 in the East)
jamesd20 08-26-2005, 08:07 AM If it (TC) comes to europe, I am there
egibooga 09-13-2005, 06:34 AM we should have world champs in TAIWAN!!!! :):):) that would be GREAT
svplaw 09-19-2005, 03:22 AM So is this final? World Championships to be held in Madrid in September? Pardon my ignorance but I am managing some Filipno players and I am interested in making them join this event. How do we go about this? Could you give us some information on how to join, the costs involved and the requirements that need to be submitted? Thanks a lot, I will appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Yes, the World Championships will definately take place in Madrid next year (and Kuala Lumpur in 2007). This is official.
If you want the exact rules, have a look at : http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/wldchmps.PDF
and (for qualification process) :
http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/wldchmps_elig.PDF
64 players/pairs are qualified in each event (MS,MD,WS,WD,XD) and the qualification is based on world ranking so your players must have the best world ranking possible in order to qualify...
Since World Championship 2005 was such a big success in US, why not continue to be in Anaheim? If badminton is going to survive well then US is the key market to penetrate, Madrid is not going to help in promoting this sport. Just look at the attendance of Olympic 2004 in badminton event ... so pitiful. Furthermore, the headquater of BadmintonCentral is also in California, I rest my case :-)

I mean, the places where badminton is popular are already hosting annual events anyway and that is something that they need a dependable base for spectators and sponsors. For the WC, on the other hand, players and sponsors will be interested anyway just because it's the WC. Having said that, one has to wonder why they wouldn't benefit from promoting in different countries twice in 5 years. It would be nice if they could promote it in countries where badminton has potential but still not overwhelming interest. I'm thinking the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Australia, New Zealand. The nice thing is that facility demands are not so limiting. It isn't like skiing or speed-skating WC, after all and it isn't even like the World Cup in 2002 when the size of the FIFA-standard stadiums gave rise to fears that they'd have rows and rows of empty seats for games not involving Korea and they actually made plans to empty middle schools for such situations.
The pattern seems clear, though. The only times in its history (including 2006)...

Volts 05-21-2006, 02:07 PM it's time Canada gets to host a big tournament which i doubt lol
event 05-21-2006, 06:07 PM it's time Canada gets to host a big tournament which i doubt lolWhy Canada? We already had the WC once, in 1985. Canada is too small a market with too much competition for viewers/fans from all those sports that are marketed seamlessly from the US. It's also too big and sparesely populated so people from regions not near the tournament won't book 5-hour flights to go see it. Korea, which has never had a WC, would make more sense with 45 million people (including many times the players of Canada) in an area a little bigger than Lake Superior. Anaheim made sense because of the big-time population density in southern California, not to mention the large number of immigrants from strong badminton nations who don't have access to world-class tournaments. These are reasons that make sense in hindsight even if we now know that the hope for US TV coverage was a pipe dream. India is another example, perhaps. There seems to be some interest there but it isn't a recognized badminton market. A mobile population isn't necessary there given the size of its cities. I can appreciate that there must be other barriers to having it there.
Cheung 05-22-2006, 01:00 AM Going back to the very first post, I wonder if the bid from Madrid was just a very, very good package. Why should it be so good? Because Madrid is bidding for the Olympics. It makes sense for a city bidding for the Olympics to host some world class events beforehand to brighten its prospects.
