Kuala Lumpur to host 2007 badminton worlds

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The International Badminton Federation (IBF) has awarded the right to hold the 2007 World Championships to Kuala Lumpur, it announced here on Sunday.

"Denmark and Malaysia had a fierce competition in the bid for hosting the 2007 World Championships. Through democratic procedures,the International Badminton Federation decided to award the right to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia," said Kang Young Joong, newly elected aspresident of the sport's world governing body Sunday morning.

It will be the first time since 1989 an Asian country hosts a badminton World Championships following the successful bid of KualaLumpur, becoming new headquarter of the IBF in October this year.

Europe has been hosting the world championships since 1989 untilthe 2005 version was awarded to California, United States.

The new IBF council also decided that Incheon of South Korea willplay host to the 2006 junior world championships.

The IBF held the annual general meeting here Sunday morning, naming Punch Gunalan from Malaysia deputy presient and selecting six vice presidents as well as 17 council members.

The newly elected IBF officials will preside over the Sudirman Cup, to be held here through May 10 to 15.

At least now we can look foward to participate the 2007 WRC :)

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will be the host for badminton's most prestigious individual event – the World Championships in 2007.

Kuala Lumpur were declared as the hosts after prevailing over Denmark in a close fight at the International Badminton Federation's (IBF) annual general meeting in Beijing yesterday.

The tournament will thus makes a return to Asia for the first time since 1989, making KL the third Asian hosts after Jakarta (1987) and Beijing (1989).

The upcoming edition of tournament will be held in Los Angeles in August and it will be the last biennial championships in the series. It will become an annual affair from Madrid next year.

The last time Malaysia hosted a major world badminton event was the 2000 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary, Gangga Rao, expressed his thanks to the newly-elected IBF deputy president, Datuk Punch Gunalan, for his assistance in helping Malaysia win the bid to host the world championships for the first time.

Meanwhile, the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) chief Kang Young-joong was elected as the new president of the IBF.

Young-joong was the only candidate nominated following the decision of current president Korn Dabaransi of Thailand not to run for a second term of office.

yeay! i can meet all d shuttlers again ! met them in mlsian open..bt ths time around hope to see more good games especially by lee chong wei,lin dan n taufik hidayat !

Do anyone need volunteers for the World Championships? I've not participated in any of those tournaments before, so would like to gain some experience in it. If you do need, pls inform me. I'll be available on weekends.
