May 12: MALAYSIA inched closer to the Division Two play-off of the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships when they thrashed Russia 5-0 in Beijing yesterday. [/url] Malaysia could even afford the luxury of allowing Lee Chong Wei play in the mixed doubles with Wong Pei Tty and the pair defeated Vladimir Ivanov-Valeri Sorokina 15-5, 15-6 to give them a 1-0 lead.
Hafiz Hashim, rested in the first match against Taiwan on Tuesday, hardly met with any resistance from Vladimir Malkov in registering an easy 15-1, 15-2 win.
Malaysia took an unassailable 3-0 lead after winning the women’s singles through Wong Mew Choo who defeated Ella Karachkova 11-9, 11-0.
Men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Chan Chong Ming stretched the lead when they defeated Vitaly Durkin-Alexander Nickolaenko 15-0, 15-8.
Pei Tty and Eei Hui completed the rout when they secured a 15-10, 15-11 win over Nina Vislova-Valeri Sorokina in the women’s doubles.
Malaysia will meet Netherlands, who edged Taiwan 3-2 in another group A match, today and a win will put them in the play-off against either Japan or Singapore tomorrow.
