View Full Version : Pimp my frame.
So I went to the local badminton shop today and I decided on getting a nanospeed 8000. we started talking about balance and then the worker there asked if i liked it head heavy... so he goes through a couple of racquet and weighs them and picks me out an 86g n8k. At first he adds about 2 grams to it with lead tape and it didnt feel rite to me quite yet. so then later he adds another 6 more grams of lead tape, all at the head mite i add, and woohoo... i think i found my mp100 2u replacement... haha... so yeah this nanospeed 8000 is now my muscle power 8000... without the mp, weighing in at a good 94g. :D
cooler 05-15-2005, 09:47 PM y dun u get a 3u At700? cheaper than a ns8k
pb_aznstyle 05-15-2005, 10:11 PM yeah... that's weird. if you like head heavy raquets then why didn't you try our an armortec? especially since a nanospeed was engineered to be head light , i don't see th poin of having to weigh it down in the places engineers worked so hard to lighten up while keeping strength... oh well... your money.
Brave_Turtle 05-15-2005, 10:20 PM Its like some ppl trying to put weight on a Ti-10 grip in order to make it head light.
I haven't tried it but im sure a NS8K with lead tapes will feel different from AT700. Could be very interesting.
But hey, personal choice and pocket right?

personal yes but it speakth of his .....:p
if u want to weight up a racket head, why start with a head light racket??
if u wanna mod a car into limo, would u start your mod on a honda civic?
i'll post later about how it feels after i string and hit with it... and why not get an armortec 700? cus i believe in nano technology :p

The Yonex marketing machine has done their job..... :D

And so did the store sales person. ;)
FEND. 05-16-2005, 09:27 AM Come on guys, at least he's trying to 'pimp' it. What have YOU GUYS done then :p:p
fingerpower 05-16-2005, 09:53 AM Come on guys, at least he's trying to 'pimp' it. What have YOU GUYS done then :p:p
Well If He would really Like to Pimp it I guuess buyin a paintbrush set would be smarter than buying a healigth-racket and adding tons of lead-tape to it ;-)

Brave_Turtle 05-16-2005, 12:12 PM OMG ppl in BF getting so rude these dayz... C'mon Its an experiment and the guy is willign to give us some feedback.
I don't see anythign wrong tryign to do this.
I think his idea is very interestign because it costumize the racquet to our own specific taste. Adding more lead tape until it reach what he likes would be smarter than buying an AT700 because:
1- He already bought NS8k
2- Adding weight to racquet head is easier than making it head light
3- Even if he gets another racquet I'm sure he will have to go trough some modification to reach his own taste
It's like finding the right weight no? You preferably start with light and you go gradually up in weight until you feel thats enough.
I tried to put lead tape on my Ti-10 once, like it wasnt enough heavy. Felt like a baseball bat and didnt like. However with my Cab21 adding lead tape was quite good. However I had to take it off since I'm a stylish guy and it looked a bit weird
And Fingerpower, from what I understood the goal of putting lead tape is to change balance point and weight of his racquet no paintbrush needed.
Gollum 05-16-2005, 12:49 PM Rudeness or honesty?
I think it's a pretty dumb thing to do. You take a precisely engineered product - that's why you bought it, Yonex convinced you of all the techno-hype - and then you mess with it.
Why not buy a racket closer to your desired spec, and for less money? It will probably work better than your crude attempts to adjust the NS8000
cooler 05-16-2005, 12:56 PM - adding weight to frame will void warranty.
I guess it isn't techno-hyped enough for some people :D
well, if i had bought a racquet that is already head heavy and added tape to it, itd probably be too heavy cus the ideal weight i am looking for is around 92-94g. so buying the headlight frame, i would be able to make it a more usable racquet i guess.

peel off lead tape before turning in :p

a 3u AT700 weighs about the same as a 3u NS8000.
u have to put weight on a ns8000 first just to match up a oem AT700.

Well, apart from the poor spelling (FingerPower, my friend, was probably drunk when commenting ;-P) I could see his point..
Why buy a racket spcially designed to be headlight in the first place (an expensive one as well I may add), If you really dont want a head-light racket?? Even if you can't test it you can just swing it in the shop to realize just how headlight it is!!.. AT700, AT800OF, Ti10 etc would have made more sense if you want more head-heaviness.
I could see the point of buying a head-heavy racket and add some "extra heaviness" for training, power or whatever.
But buying a headlight racket if what you "really" want a head-heavy one, would be like buying a 2-seat roadster car and then rebuild it to a 6-seater, rather than buying a station-wagon and go from that to build your 6-seater
(or even better find a ready made 6-seater ;-) )
I am sure it wouldn't be a problem to trade it for a YY ti-10, AT700, SOTX Woven 11 or 13 etc if he indeed wanted a different balanced racket design.
My 2 cents,
Twobeer
P.S. wouldn't it be nice with some custom paintjobs and design for rackets ;-) D.S.

i meant the balance would be too crazy head heavy if i had put tape on an already head heavt racquet, like that one guy said, swinging a baseball bat.
i'd also like to say that i dont like any of the current yonex racquets balances, so yeah, i decided to get it more balanced towards what i like. dont care if it was engineered to be a certain way, i'll engineer it to be my way... bwahahaha :D

Gollum that was the whole point. The fact is that he already bought the racquet. If no Yonex racquet fits his preference then adding lead tape can help alot.
But Cooler, you get a good point there about the warranty. :p

Oh I see. So he bought a top-of-the-range racket without seeing if he liked it first.
I still don't expect people to do this, because it also seems dumb :p But they keep doing it, my expectations notwithstanding.
well actually, i demoed the racquet for about a week, and thought that it was okay, but now that its head heavy, i'll probably like it more. imma test it out tonite so yeah.
Joseph 05-16-2005, 03:49 PM You should let me try out the racquet Quan ;)
pb_aznstyle 05-16-2005, 07:43 PM did you at least try out the armortec 800 off? casue that thing is really head heavy.
i dont like light racquets... they dont have that solid feel for me.
bluejeff 05-16-2005, 11:55 PM peel off lead tape before turning in :p
That won't work because we already knew you did that :p
jug8man 05-17-2005, 05:55 AM i have to give props to Quan for opening this excelent thread and topic!
i would like to suggest a showcase of Frame Pimpin'!!!!!!!!!!
----> PICS! PICS! PICS!
yeah im talking about racquets with sweet body paintjobs, or modifications done that you wanna show and share with other bc members.
i mean if people do this with cars..... surely we can do this with rackets. share your creative and artistic persona thru your badminton gear fellas!

I think you're right man. Add to that people mod their PC cases with Neons, a flash paint job etc.... Why not racquet.
hmm.. i'll try to put in a tv on my racquet so i can watch badminton wherever i go... haha jk.
as for the racquet... it feels pretty good to me... when i can get another n8k.. i'll probably do the same as what i did to this racquet. i like the balance it has now... has that solid feeling i need out of a heavy racquet. i cant really do a good review of how drops, and net drops and all that other stuff is, cus basically its up to the player to make a good drop/smash/clear... but the feel of the racquet is pretty awesome.

u should post a pic of your pimped racket here to kickoff this show and tell.
jug8man 05-17-2005, 09:59 PM Im thinking of giving one of my rackets a new paintjob.
prob start with a cheaper racket tho
things to remember
1) make sure your grommets / grommet holes do not got stuck full of dried paint! cover the holes with something...... like a toothpick?
2) goes without saying, better to repaint the racket unstrung
3) i think we got to remove the original paint first before applying a new one. use smooth sandpaper. dont use acid.
4) always safety and health first. be careful of sharp objects during work. also..... with all the sanding going on..... make sure you dont inhale any of the 'dust'.
cheers

tried out Quan's racket for a few hits yesterday. while i haven't used a non-pimped NS8000 before, the pimped one that Quan has did feel pretty good. super head heavy (he must have at least 5-6 lead tapes all over the racket head) and very stable.
but unfortunately...
wood_22_chuck 05-23-2005, 01:24 PM hmmmm ... you Kwun, I never pictured you using the word "pimp" and it's derivatives (pimped, pimps, etc) ... It's HILARIOUS! :D
Maybe "personally modified" is what I pictured you saying.

i am just going with the flow here in this thread... ;)
charzord 05-23-2005, 01:45 PM Don't you think you might be putting too much strain on the shaft? Nano may be strong, but lead is very dam heavy.

i'm sure the hits will feel good and solid but at a sacrifice of maneuverability
