will be happy to as long as it doesn't turn into a thread about OCBC politics. i think most badminton players have enough of those discussions.

Thanks Kwun for creating this thread. But from what i have observed for a few years now, compared with other badminton related Forum, Badminton Central moderators have always been very fair and objective when come to point of views and its opinions. Plus their moderators have been very strict in maintaining proper order and quick in giving warning when seeing stuffs getting out of hand or turning into politics and character bashing or character assasination. Whereas other forum tend to be rather subjective and did not give proper warning when things got out of control. My main purpose for the creation of this thread is for informational only to badminton players in the States and also all over the world since Badminton Central has readers from all continents. But if there is any one from any where is trying to use this thread to stir something out again, please by all means, give them warning or even block their posting right or access. THanks.
thanks harimau. :)

OCBC limits the brands: OCBC and Yonex; however, you can find them via your own source, not only from the in-situ shop.

Samkool, OCBC is a private club and it does take money to run it. Having to use their birds doesn't seem that bad to me. It's just part of being a member there. True, the price for the birds there are a bit more than what you can get outside, but if you buy in bulk, it's pretty cheap. With people complaining about the price of OCBC, you should take a look at the new clubs openning up in N.Cal. They are about the same price as OCBC.

The rules and behavior of a club is "All part of price you pay" when you join. There is always a balance. Member should put on a business person's hat before complaining and club owner should just shutdown before complaining about losing money. For the members, it is very simple: Work within the rules and Vote with your own pocket book. For the owner, it is more complex, there are various aspects to balance: money, fame, and stature. It is not just money alone.

1. Regular OCBC Group Training Program:
The Regular OCBC Group Training Program is an intensive, year-round training program for selected participants who trains for three hours per day in the afternoon from Mondays through Fridays with the OCBC Coaching Staff:
Cai Zi Min
Coaching Manager
Ignatius Rusli
Coach
Tony Gunawan
Coach
Eti Gunawan
Coach
Cindy Shi
Coach
Participants have the opportunity to train with some of the best coaches in the United States as well as to practice and play with some of the best United States badminton players in the OCBC Elite and Junior Teams.
The annual program fee for the regular afternoon session is $7,500.00*, which works out to less than $9.75 per hour* of training!
Only participants in the afternoon group training program have the option of adding training in the morning for two hours per day from Mondays through Fridays by paying the annual program fee of $2,500.00* for the morning session (total fee for five hours per day, Mondays through Fridays: $10,000.00* per year.)
2. Introductory OCBC Group Training Programs:
For 2005, the following Special Introductory OCBC Group Training Programs headed by Coaching Manager Cai Zi Min are open to first-time participants with a maximum age of 14 years old:
2 days per week from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM - $2,000.00 annual program fee*.
3 days per week from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM - $3,000.00 annual program fee*.
5 days per week from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM - $4,000.00 annual program fee*.
The 2 & 3 days per week introductory programs are a great deal since the hourly training cost for the entire year works out to less than $6.50 per hour* of training! The 5 days per week introductory program is an even better deal at less than $5.25 per hour* of training!
3. Non-Local Resident OCBC Group Training Program:
The Non-Local Resident OCBC Group Training Program is open to participants who have residential addresses that are located more than 50 miles from OCBC (proof of non-residency required).
The monthly fee for this training program is $1,000.00*. This fee must be paid at the beginning of each month. Alternatively the fee for this training program can be paid daily at $50.00* per day.
Participants in this program will have full access to both the regular afternoon group training sessions and the morning group training sessions of the Regular OCBC Group Training Program and will have full OCBC membership benefits while they are in this training program (an OCBC membership not required for this particular OCBC training program.) Training shuttlecocks are also included.
* Important notes:
A. All the listed annual program fees are for participation in the admitted group training program through the end of the calendar year regardless of when the participant starts training in the group training program. There is absolutely no discount for starting participation after January 2nd.
B. All group training program fees are non-refundable and must be paid prior to participation in the group training programs.
C. Except where specifically noted, all OCBC Group Training Program participation requires OCBC membership, which is not included in the training program fee.
D. All OCBC Group Training Program participation requires approval by the OCBC Management.
E. Group Training Program participants do not automatically become members of either the OCBC Elite Team or the OCBC Junior Team (admission to either team requires separate OCBC Management approval.)
F. None of the OCBC Group Training Programs include any lodging or meal arrangement.
G. All the information regarding the OCBC Group Training Programs are subject to change without notice.
Please contact OCBC Manager Tim Mangkalakiri (timocbc@aol.com) if you are interested in participating in any of the above group training programs or if you need more information.

Congratulations to Tony G & Howard Bach for making a history at the first World Championship in the US soil. There is never be a better time than this one because Badminton Worldwide needs a big boost in order for the sport to grow to the next level. All we need is to confince American corporations that badminton is not a backyard sport as it has notoriously been labeled with.
Thanks to Mr. Don Chew for having such a vision 9 years ago. He has single-handedly transformed US badminton into world wide mao.
Thanks to Tony & Howard for making such a dream become reality.
Please keep up the good work !!!!!!!!!

Chinese Taipei NO 1 WD Players, CHeng, Wen-Hsing has been playing badminton in OCBC during this week. She stays back right after 05 World CHampionship since she was invited to do some exhibition and coaching for some junior players in the east coast area. Then she has a few remaining days before her flight back home, she spares some time to practice and play game with OCBC Junior Elite Players. What a great honor and fortune to get this rare opportunity !!!!
Thank you so much, Cheng, Wen Hsing.......Good luck to you !!!!

Good question about the Olympic eligibility. At this moment, if there is nothing happened about the USCIS (previously known as IRS) and the immigration laws, the answer would be NO, since the regulations are strict and the government workers are inefficient. If you had seen the DMV here in US, then you know why.
BTW, people have the right to choose where they would like to live. Badminton is not like volleyball or basketball which is very team oriented. Is it really important where the players were originally from? BTW, if there were some good incentives from some countries, I believe many professional players would be very interested in moving there (for a better life). Also, badminton is a very gentleman and lady sports. We are not playing American football here. Showing respect to the opponents is also important (and polite). Everyone knows Tony and Halim are great players, they play their best, and would give their opponents as few points as possible. Therefore, there is no need to be sarcastic about anything.

05 USBDF Winter Jr International, a year-end jr event has just been concluded yesterday. It was in fact a 3 day fun, excitement, thrilling-filled event where all junior players slugged it all out trying to outplay, outsmart, eventually outbeat his/her opponents. About 180 players from Mexico, Canada, East COast, Nor Cal, South Cal, MBBC, SGVBC, plus some highschoolers were among the participants of this event. It was a huge success ........ in a sense that we have seen more new faces esp in the lower age group like U-9, U11, U-13, and U15. If this trend is to be continued, then USA Badminton will have a brighter future of having more selection of players ....

Thanks to OCBC for hosting the tournament! We always enjoy your hospitality, and this year was no different (despite the flu going around).
I agree about the new faces. And it was nice to see some kids improving a lot.
Looking forward to 2006. Re: the Spring Jr Open, is that the BAJO or another tournament? I can't find it in the web sites.

Regarding the upcoming 06 USBDF Spring Jr Open, USBDF boards have not picked up the exact date yet so far. But since 06 US Adult National which will be at OCBC falls on April 7 - 9, 06. So i would assume the Jr event will run either one weekend prior or one weekend after that. Which one would you guys prefer ??

Well who knows ?? Right .... like maybe the re-emerging of Trisna and June Hu for the mixed double contenders, or Alex Liang for MS ..... or maybe Elie Wu for WS or Elie Wu & Shannon Hsu for WD ......
Or perhap other good players who have never tried out suddenly re-surface to take on the challenge ..... the more the merrier ....
I just wish more and more badminton players can come out and support the sport especially in a USA Badminton sanctioned event so that years after years we dont see the eroding number of players coming out for the trial.
When you look at the number of recent participants to the US Adult Nationals, NTF Trial events, they have been rather discouraging and disheartening. I mean we all talk the talk of trying to promote the sport of badminton in the US; but do we walk the talk !!! I know for a fact that they are lots of excellent players in the West Coast region (region 5) esp in SGVBC and perhaps Nor Cal clubs, but unless they come out to support these natioanl events, then the sport will really go no where !!! And how can we present the sport to the corporate America to get sponsorship if the National event only drawing about 40 players or 60 maximum for all 5 events ??? Think about it !!

I spoke with Alex (he's my coach) yesterday and his stance is similar to Trisna, Jun and Grace and the other players of their caliber: they don't have the time to train to compete at that level. They may play a tourney once in a while but to continuously play and train for every tournament, they just cannot devote that time. They've had their glory and it's time to move on (so to speak). So the "re-emerging players" (as you call it, good name) while only re-emerge once in a while or in Alex's case, once in a blue moon when I plead him to play a tourney with me. :p
Or perhap other good players who have never tried out suddenly re-surface to take on the challenge ..... the more the merrier ....
This is the best possibility as in the 6 months I've been at SGVBC I've seen a few Junior Nationals improve in leaps and bounds. Also some young 20 somethings improve at a tremendous rate too. In a year or two, it'll be interesting to see if they can compete.
I just wish more and more badminton players can come out and support the sport especially in a USA Badminton sanctioned event so that years after years we dont see the eroding number of players coming out for the trial.
Of course, we all wish that. :)

Again, playing in tourneys is very time consuming, not all people can get out there. I know some 40 somethings that play a very decent game and ask them about playing in the U.S. Open or other tourneys and they all say, too much time. They don't have the time. It's very hard to get out there.

I understand that fact too but it depends on what is the motivation to play now. If their motivation to play is to win then of course they have to train hard in order to give him/herself a decent chance to win. But i think with their skills, techniques plus experience most of our emerging junior players will still be unable to tackle them. However, it will be an excellent venue for the juniors to get some kind of experience and sparring/playing with different types and caliber players. As it is now, there is not alot of national level players in the circuit. Did you see the player list i put out at the beginning of this thread ? It will be kind of providing an evaluation for the juniors whether or not they have arrived.
This is the best possibility as in the 6 months I've been at SGVBC I've seen a few Junior Nationals improve in leaps and bounds. Also some young 20 somethings improve at a tremendous rate too. In a year or two, it'll be interesting to see if they can compete.
Of course, they have trained hard and improved a lot too. But then they found no one to test their skills with. All they have now are either the current national players which they still are behind 1 - 2 level or they peer groups. So this emerging juniors do not have the opportunity to play with different players enough to prepare them for the future.
Again, playing in tourneys is very time consuming, not all people can get out there. I know some 40 somethings that play a very decent game and ask them about playing in the U.S. Open or other tourneys and they all say, too much time. They don't have the time. It's very hard to get out there.

Which corporations would want to sponsor an event with such a small spectator bases ? I tried Pizza Hut before they would not even bother. Maybe some smaller businesses would .... but that is not our main target !! We want to go mainstream ..... like NIke, Reebok, Adidas, Billabong, etc etc who might be interested in sports pertinent wears or accessories.
Just my 2 cents.

EVen though it did not draw a huge turn out of high school coaches from the Southern Section, the clinic was so productive and knowledgeable even for people like myself and others who have been playing badminton for years. There were so many new tips being offered by the big names like Howard Bach, Tony Gunawan, Halim Haryanto, and Bob Malaythong.
There must be about 13 coaches from various High Schools like Bolsa Grande, La Quinta, Cypress, Redland HIgh School, Colton HS, Pioneer Middle School, Mira Costa HS Etc. We all learned so much in a 3 short hour of training. It started out from proper warm up procedures, strecthing, basic grips, hitting position, different strokes, foot works, and single & double & Mix double formation and strategies. And then how to do multi-birds feeding.
We must thank the collaboration between Yonex and OCBC, its coaches for hosting such an excellent event. We hope they will continue doing it next year too.
To top it all, Bebe's Cafe sponsored the luncheon for all participants of the clinic plus Yonex gave out gift bags to all of us......
What an excellent way to spend a Saturday morning ........

Is your coach name Mike something ?
I played against him ....He was an old timers; i think he played in the A rank tournament in the 70's. He still has the strokes but since he has not been playing for more than 10 years......he lacks the stamina and the touch or consistencies. But he knows how to play the game .... He should know how to teach you guys the proper techniques. You guys are lucky ..!!

I Know huh. I remember in the 2004 US Open Lili Zhou destroyed Canadian No 1 single Charmain Reid easily during 1 or 2 round of the main draw. The reason of my prediction is 3 to 2 is that we might lose one single and 1 double event.
But yesterday during the playing time at OCBC, I heard US Uber CUp Team has already advanced by beating Canadian Team 3- 0 but i can't see the results yet at www.tournamentsoftware.com

I think the other issue is the Entry Fee is quite pricey ....plus the distance (Gas price is rather expensive now) .... it actually could be keys determinant to the draw of the crowd.
Comparing to the BAY Area Open which draws an average of 250 - 300 players everytime they hold the tourney, i kind of wonder as to why in the down south tourneys we have not seen that kind of number in any tournaments at all. Is it because we dont have enough players in the south or what ???

Who you calling a "street player"?! ...Oh wait, that's what I am. :p
And we don't play until 2-3am, we play until 3-4am, get it right. :p :D
Why? Lots of reasons:
1) Some go to church on Sunday
2) Some have family obligations
3) Some play for fun, not for glory
4) Some don't like tourney formats/the wait, your whole weekend is gone
5) Some don't feel they are good enough to play :p
6) Some only want to play a few matches, not potentially 5-6 matches that can last all day/weekend: physically too demanding
7) Entry fees cost a lot these days :p
8) I'm sure there are many more reasons that are time and commitment related.

Thanks for the feedback, DInk...... i see it they are all legitimate reasons ......
It is just too bad and sad to see cause in northern cal, people who already retired from badminton still come out to support the sport they play even they know that their glory days are over e.g. Ben Lee, Stanley Wu, Kevin Yang, Jin Song, etc..... and esp the highschoolers, they know if they meet one of the USA Badminton Players they will get toasted but they still come out and take up the challenge to find out where they take as compared to our BOB (best of the best). So i dont know what to say .... perhaps players up there have more itch for tournaments than players down south ....just my 2 cents.

You should have Nick and Claudia play. :D

Such small draw, looks like a local tournament.
Hardly anyone from east coast coming to this tournament.
I guess the OCBC players scared everyone away at the Boston Open.
Seems tournament participation is getting lower and lower.:(
viper .... who won in the boston open? ... i assume guys from cali?? the boston open organizers haven't updated their website yet and the people i know who played left early when they lost .... just wondering who won.

Come watch the game ......it is free entry !!!
During the last two days of 06 US Adult National, i am so glad to see so many junior players stepping up to participate in it. I mean they know that they might not have the chance to win but the courage to take part in it is worth mentioning and earn an applaud for them.
Despite that, i have seen huge improvement from these juniors namely Rena Wang, Joanne Chen, Vimla Phongasavithas, Cheryl Chow, Priscilla Lun, Thuy Hoang, Laurent Todt, Daphne Ng for the girls and Yau Hwa Chan, Emmanuel Pun, Bartolo Chan, Randy Hsia, the Lin Bros (Marvin & Calvin), Chris Lun, Azam Ali, Sasha Boyarin, and of course, Arnold Setiadi, Andrew Todt, Ronald Sou plus others like the Shu Bros, Stephen WOng etc.
Keep up the good work .....

I saw most of those junior players also myself...They do showed courage and tremendous improvements from the last time i saw them compete, despite their end result..
I know some of the players mentioned are from Northern California, and they are not part of the OCBC training center...
But personally, not too sound i'm undermining the training up north in NorCal, but i strongly believe some of them have the talent and skill in-par or close to par with the OCBC-trained juniors(esp. Bartolo Chen and Arnold Setiadi for Men's and Daphne Ng and Lauren Todt for Women's field)..But IMO getting trained here @ OCBC will really polish their game even more...Just to name two junior player i saw with a big improvement was Jack Shu(the big, tall MD junior player who really showed some power smashing) and Kuei-Ya Chan(WS)..:)..
If they do decide to move down here and train @ OCBC, which i hope those juniors will, boy i can see and picture the US National team really continue the success without any degradation...And i can't wait to see them improve even more and win future US Nationals/IBF tournaments..
Of course, if they are also able to be sent to outside international tournaments, have it Satellite or 1 or 2 stars tournaments, who knows what the limits..:)
After all, they are and will be the future of US Badminton, within 2-3 yrs...:)

SGVBC has an informal "Pot" on Monday and Thursdays. Entry fee, $5 or $10 per person depending on the number of people that sign up. It's single elimination, minimum 4 teams, max 16 teams, winners take all. Pairing is dependent on who's playing and how many.
Recently there hasn't been too many true Pots. Just one match side bets.

Too bad Tony Gunawan nor Halim Haryanto (nor other badminton fanatics in the U.S.) didn't sign up and participate to play..but the players who participated were very good themselves..:)
Did you watch last year's World Championship here in our own backyard @ the Anaheim Pond??..If not, you really missed a wonderful treat..
On that note, no worries, wait til you see and attend the upcoming US Open, which hopefully should come this August or September..Now, that's a real IBF grade tournament with other international players participating(albeit a 1* tourney)..

Yes, best of luck to them also..
They should already left, if not within a day??..cos the competition is starting on April 27th??..
Some personal thoughts:
Hmm, noticed Eva won't be playing 1st WS, as a matter of fact not even in a Single event??.. but rather Lily Zhou and the veteran & coach Cindy is playing 3rd WS?? I guess they want to save her(Eva's) energy for the WD event??..But if they go with the current format, SSSDD, hopefully one of the 3 WS player can win, if not they'll be sitting and not playing..
Unfortunate for Ms. Keszthelyi, but what a good news & big break for Ms. Todt..
For 3rd MS, i thought Howard Bach should play instead..Cos it will be the last Men's event, in case they go that far, and he will already played his MD(1st) event with Tony..I thought they should've added Bartolo Chen also, so Raju and Eric Go can just focus on MS..hmmm
Anyways, some of them will have early jitters, but should be fine as the tourney progress. Long wish, but looking fw to them at least reaching the QF..Good luck and they should get lots of experience from this..And hope they enjoy themselves and have lots of fun..:)
