A new kind of tournament has been founded : Continental Championship.

According to Indo's paper Jawapos, for the first time, it will be crashed between Europa and Asia.
If this event success, later on all continents will have its representative.

The event will take place in Manila, Philipine on 12-14 July 2005, 2 days after Malaysia Open.
For this year (first time) the players will be choosen by the organizer. Later will be choosen by the regional organization (ABC, EBU, etc.....).

Each continent send 9 players. There are 7 matches : 2 MS, 2 WS, 1 MD, 1 WD and 1 XD.
From Indonesia : Taufik Hidayat and Luluk/Alven.

The organizer will give a money price for the winners.
The winner get 50.000 US$, the runner up get 20.000 US$.
The organizer will take the players from KL on 11 or 12 July and back to KL on 15 July. This is for the players who attend to Malaysia Open.

just read in badminton-indonesia.com that there will be somekind of inter-continent badminton match in manila(i dont know about it, so if u do, please explain), it says that it will be held by both abc and ebu, that there will be 2 ms, 2 ws, and on md, wd, and xd

I remember reading it myself in 2 websites.The details,i dont know,but what i read was i think it said...-in 2007 a new badminton super league will be started in which different countries will host matches for over a week or so.Dont know if it will be team or individual competition.

When looking at world ranking, only WD seems an obvious match.
Europe is better ranked in three matches and Asia in four matches.

So nothing so obvious just like that... it will all depend whether both sides have their best players fielded or not!

My line-up is only theoretical based on world ranking...
Obviously Taufik would have a good chance of playing second MS.
Also Mia Audina could be playing in WS for Europe.
Not sure Asia would field all Chinese WS and WD (not needed anyway) so there could be some tighter matches there too...

If they are having such an event it could be a good idea to limit the no.of players from one country.u want to see a asia vs europe battle,so u are right too many chinese would not be right.

i dont know, but badminton-indonesia.com says that abc has requested taufik, luluk, and alven to play, but i dont know if it is confirmed, it also says that the rest will be confirmed on 20th of june

i am soo agree, lets say, asia has this superb combination of CHINA, indonesia, korea, and malaysia, then europe will be,,,well, sure, they have formidable xd , nathan and gail, but the rest? i think they still have to rely on denmark, but then again, i think what dan_fan said was right too, becos this way maybe we can see some new good players from europe, and so that european badminton will not be too denmark-y (not that anything is wrong with that, as we all know they have what it takes to dominate europe (and they do)))

Good point.Did n't strike me.Well if it's rankings based then the rankings decide,but if it is an invitational tournament then perhaps u may find more danes and less chinese, given the asian superiority of the game over europe .

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's top ranked men's doubles badminton pair of Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat will feature for Asia in a revived tie against Europe in Manila from July 12-14.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) deputy president, Datuk Punch Gunalan, said that the competition was aimed at strengthening the ties among players from the two regions.

揥e had this competition a long time ago. We have revived it but we are introducing a new format. We hope this competition will create a good rapport between the badminton nations of Asia and Europe,?said Gunalan.

揥e are inviting the best players from Asia and Europe. This will certainly excite the public.?nbsp;

Well,the format does seem very very interesting.It's a 3-day event,so it could take 3 days to know the winner[asia or europe??]and also like gunalan said it will be important that the captain field the right player on the given day.Pretty interesting as well.
We have all been critisizing the IBF a lot lately,but i think we should spare atleast a second to appreciate such efforts to bring in new ideas and interest everyone and also on it's efforts to establish training centres around the world.

PBSI has decided that Luluk/Alven won't play even they get an invitation from ABC. From Indonesia just Taufik will play.

The Filipino brother-sister mixed doubles pair of Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion (no. 24 world ranking) will be playing for Asia. On top of the hometown crowd cheering them on, they will need all the luck they can get since they will be going up against Robertson and Emms. Whew!

Out of Asia, Australasia, South America, North America/Mediterranian, Africa, Europe, seems that there is a very very very huge gap between Asia/Europe and the rest. It could be 15-0 for every match between Asia/Europe(if all top players are fielded) and RTOW, maybe except for Gunawan/Bach pair.

In an event that will further boost local badminton’s growing popularity, Europe’s best and Asia’s brightest collide in the First Manuel V. Pangilinan International Badminton Championships or MVP Cup from July 12 to 14 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Patterned after golf’s Ryder Cup format, 10 players from Europe and 10 from Asia—including local bets Kennivic and Kennie Asuncion—will clash three straight days in chase of the top team prize of $50,000 out of the $80,000 pot.

China’s Lin Dan, the world’s top-ranked player, heads the Asian squad while Germany’s Bjorn Joppien, the world No. 17, banners the European team in this event held in honor of Manny Pangilinan, the chair of telecom giant Philippine Long Distance Co. that is sponsoring the tournament.

"Asia versus Europe is a first in badminton. It’s a sport that Filipino can excel, and this is the best that we can offer. It’s a way of telling Filipinos they have the potential to be great in the sport," Pangilinan said at the launching of the tournament at the Mandarin Hotel in Makati City.

Also returning to see action in the unique championship is Indonesia’s talented but mercurial Taufik Hidayat, the 2004 Athens Olympics men’s gold medalist, who is a local crowd favorite.

Asia also boasts of China’s Zhang Ning, the reigning women’s world champion, and Uber Cup titlist See Yoon Hee of South Korea, who is ranked No. 16.

On the other hand, Europe has the world’s top mixed doubles of Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms of England, who will face the Asuncions in the last day of the MVP Cup co-sanctioned by the Asian Badminton Confederation and European Badminton Union.

The biggest international badminton event to be held in the country since the 2000 Asian championships, the MVP Cup is organized by the Philippine Badminton Association and the International Management Group.

Completing the Asian team are Malaysians Chan Choon Ming and Koo Kian Keat in the men’s doubles and Thailand’s Saralee Thungthongkam and Sathine Chankrachangwong for the women’s pairs. Europe will also have world No. 18 Robert Blair of England (men’s doubles) and IBF’s No. 4 Yao Jie of Netherland for the ladies doubles.
