And myself of course :) Cheung 05-31-2005, 08:50 AM Go to the Tian He stadium (in Tian He district). There is a football stadium that fits 60k-80k people there so it should be easy to find! Along the ground at one side of the stadium are lots of small shops that sell badminton gear. Apparently there is another street somewhere in GuangZhou that sells lots of badminton but I don't know the exact details. valkyier 05-31-2005, 09:08 AM Hmm...buying from Guang Zhou...I am sure you know of the risks...If I were you, I would just go for the clothes, grips and other stuffs...but not racquets unless if you really know that what you are gonna buy is a genuine piece.:D Cheung 05-31-2005, 09:37 AM Agree. Tian He stadium should be fairly safe though. I've seen blatent fakes in other shops. One of the shops there is run by Yu Jin Hao/Gong Zhi Chao. That one should be pretty safe!! LazyBuddy 05-31-2005, 10:09 AM One of the shops there is run by Yu Jin Hao/Gong Zhi Chao. That one should be pretty safe!! I believe their shop name is "Ying Hao". ;) Maybe this is also a good chance to get an autograph. ;) ruth1 05-31-2005, 10:54 AM Thanks! I'll be staying at the TianHe Sports Center so I'm guessing it should be pretty easy to find. I just didn't know they actually had a badminton store right there on location. How exciting! And don't worry, I have the rackets I need, I'll just be looking for clothes and other apparel. Unless of course I see a great deal on a Nano. I'll be careful though in choosing. Thanks again. Also, are the items such as clothes and shoes cheaper in cost than they are in the US? jump_smash 06-02-2005, 10:10 PM Thanks! Be prepared to bargain! Best to go with a friend/associate who can speak Manadrin or Cantonese. Rough map attached, sorry this is the only one I have on hand, I can scan in a better one later with Chinese and pinyin names if required (Ershado is the grey island on river with the Guangzhou road running through it ruth1 06-06-2005, 11:42 AM Wow! Thanks a lot jumpsmash. I will print your map before I leave. LazyBuddy 06-06-2005, 01:49 PM Also, are the items such as clothes and shoes cheaper in cost than they are in the US? If u shop for more local / less famous brand, then it will generally be cheaper. If u shoot for Yonex, then the brand new stock / model will be same or close to the US price, but the older stock might be easily obtained with a decent deal. ;) jump_smash 06-06-2005, 09:33 PM Wow! Thanks a lot jumpsmash. I will print your map before I leave. Ruth1, No worries mate!, if you require any more info or have questions PM me, and I will try and help. It has been a little while since I was in Guangzhou, last time was 2002 Thomas Cup when I went with some friends. I do have a friend he who is originally from Guangzhou, so I can collaborate answers to questions. Note there a lot of shops nearby to the Stadium, you can purchase many things, with bargining and beening careful - cheap DVD movies etc. Also note there is a large shopping centre, you guys call them malls (?) nearby, Teen Plaza. Consider going to Beijing Road for general shopping, as there are a lot of shops, clothing etc there. Try using underground link to go into the city (purple lines on map) which is cheap and quick, or use taxi. Have a good trip and enjoy yourself there! Cheung 06-07-2005, 01:52 AM Ruth, going for the first time? read this. it will help you understand the experience. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2438&highlight=China ruth1 06-10-2005, 12:28 PM Thanks for the replies everyone! They definitely help with my apprehension of traveling to China for the first time. I'm especially nervous about the training being extremely difficult, so it's harder for me to get nervous about the culture shock and my complete lack of knowledge of the Chinese language. But everyone's advice has helped. Thanks so much. I'll keep posted about the training and experience up there. It's going to be a great 2 months :) |
