I just wanted to know if it is safe to use other types of shoes for badminton play? I live in Calgary and there's no good badminton shoes around here (If there is, I just don't know where to look I guess.) I was wondering if I can use basketball shoes instead, because the sport itself also moves in short distances, good footwork and need good ankle support.
If basketball shoes don't work, what shoes would you recommend?
Thanks for reading this and thanks for the help all! :D

I heard volleyball shoes were good since it's even more similar to badminton.

Well there is Sport Chek and Sport Mart but their indoor shoes don't have heel support (Reebok and some other brand) and quite frankly... they're ugly.
And I want to buy online, but I had this bad exprerience in eBay (received a cracked Cab30MS and didn't get refund) and even though it's not the same as ordering online, I don't trust the web for shopping anymore.
Unless, you have any websites that you would recommend (you have bought it and received good service, merchandise etc.)
Thanks for the help guys

I have to disagree. Running shoes' balance is all wrong. your heel is too hig in them, and it's easy to roll your ankle.

running shoes are in fact *VERY* bad for badminton. they have poor traction in indoor courts, their soles are too thick and can cause sprained ankles, and the top of the shoes have no lateral support. in fact, among all sports shoes, running shoes would be the worse fitting to badminton.

So forget about runners...
Basketball is still in question...
Volleyball shoes are hard to find, but I will search...
What about Cross-Trainers?

basically, the only type of shoes that is close to badminton shoes are volleyball, beyond that is tennis shoes, anything else are a no no.
you can find more discussion about shoes by doing a search.

aside from volleyball shoes, squash or racquetball shoes will do too.
tennis shoes are another option.

If u take badminton seriously, i would say that basketball shoes should not even be considered as it is to heavy for the sport. Ur best bet is either volleyball, squash, racketball, or even indoor soccer shoes.
