View Full Version : Did Swie King Jump the Net?
UkPlayer 01-11-2002, 08:43 PM I seem to remember a game where Liem Swie King jumped the net at the end of it.
Have I been dreaming too much of badminton or did this happen?
If so who against/when/where?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

I guess Jumping the net is no big deal! I mean when i was in school I was a high jumper and my record still stands! I jumped 5'7 actually 173sms! Teh school record still stands after 7Yrs!
We dont have sponge o do a F.Flop! We have to do teh old style of sci on sand! so much as to facilities in India!
So i guess a Five feet jump is no big deal for a person who pracise Jumps In Their Practise!
But then i have never heard of anyone do it1 Prob i shoudl try it today!
No kidding !
I have about 15 taped matches of Liem plus magazine articles
from 1980 to 1988 but don't ever recall such a thing.
Maybe it happened before 1980 ?
Anyway nice to know people remember the guy, especially
from UK.
It seems that videotapes used by TV stations from 1976-1976
were in some kind of maxi format tapes. There are no more
machines in existence to play such tapes, this means any tapes
during that period is as good as lost.
Seems a good story. No record of Liem having been a high-jumper in school or anywhere, and I doubt that any player would risk his arm, leg or even neck by trying that 'derring do' even if he is on a high after winning a major. In fact, especially not after a strenuous match when you are pooped. You might end up splat on the floor on the other side - quite messy I would think. Anyone for 'jumping the badminton net'? John
UkPlayer 01-12-2002, 09:34 AM In my memory or dream, he 'hurdled' it rather than did a forward or back flop. Of course Morten Frost used to be an Olympic standard High Jumper so no doubt he could have flopped over it!
It's pretty strange if it's only a dream because it is such a vivid memory. Maybe it wasn't Swie King at all but someone else who did it. I got it into my head that it was Swie King at an epic World Championship!!

UkPlayer 01-12-2002, 09:38 AM Yes, I definiteley remember Liem Swie King, I saw an old tape of him when I was about 14 and he certainly opened my eyes to the game. One of my favourites along with Prakash and Icuk.

i don't remember he jumped the net, but i remember when he played against icuk in the final of world champ '83
that's one of the best game ever in badminton history.
Well for people who have never seen LSK play you can
see his spitting image in Taufik Hidayat.
He had nicknames like "muscle boy" , "smash hit" etc
and really knew how to put a shuttle hard and fast.
Of course he didn't have the stamina to sustain it in the 15
points system but would have been unbeatable in the 7 point
system. He was a real star like Frost, Zhao Jian Hua, Yang
Yang etc.
I would imagine he might have been very happy winning his
first All England in 1978 beating Rudy and might have jumped
pver the net or something but then we will never know.
You are probably correct if you had been following the AE
over BBC from 1976- 1980.
Hmm... is it even possible? I wouldn't compare myself to Liem, but I'm 194 cm and a decent high-jumper, and I wouldn't even dream of hurdling a badminton net...
Well Mag in SEA they play a game on a badminton court
using a badminton net with 3/4 players on each side and instead of using a racquet and bird, they use their legs and heads to hit a rattan ball over the net very much like volleyball.
Some of them can kick the ball just as it crosses the net Bruce Lee/Eric Cantona style and some can flip over and kick the ball
scissors style overhead Brazilian style and still land on their feet.
Maybe LSK also plays that game. Ha.You should try the game sometime.
Sorry for being so ignorant, but what is a "rattan" ball?
OOOPS, rattan is a type of cane in SEA used for making
furniture. It looks like bamboo but is about 5-10mm in diameter
and used to used as teachers canes to whip recalcitrant
juveniles in class in good old days. You see it in Tarzan movies
or George of the jungle when Tarzan clings to some vines and
swings from tree to tree. But don't try it as in its original state the vine is very thorny.
Anyway the game is called Sepak Takraw and is played by the
natives of Msia, Indonesia and in Thailand. It is quite fun to watch as is like playing soccer and volleyball on a badminton court and the plyers are very agile and acrobatic.
I see. Sounds weird, but cool!
I have seen The 3 player edition! One guy throws the ball to the guy in the middle and he smashes! that is the SERVE!
It is like volleyball excpet that U cant use ur Hands! they will spike using their legs and they will control it liek Soccer!
Vey very difficult game! I was taken back by it! I think Thai or malay are th ebest in that Game! Weird but i strongly believe that That is One game that i can Nver even try to play!
as to mag u jumping 5 feet i think it is a Mental block! It is a Piece of cake! i guess if i can reducve abt 9 kilos and start excersising then i can do it in a Months time! No problems! It is like 7 yrs Since i did a HIGH Jump! That is a OLD record that i still hold!
It is one of the sports included in every Asian Games.
Cheung 01-14-2002, 02:50 PM It is certainly an amazing game.
The rattan ball is very hard.
trapped-never 01-15-2002, 12:57 AM Here in Czech we play similar game called 'nohejbal'. We use tennis net and soccer ball. Number of players is 2/3 on each side.
A visitor from Eastern Europe!
Tell us more about badminton in East Eurpe other than Ukraine!
Yogi, you got me wrong. Not that it really matters, but I didn't mean I'm not able to high jump a badminton net. I meant that I doubt I could <B>hurdle>/B> it, which is another thing altogether.

Sorry, got lagged, apparently clicked "post" twice... I hate that.

trapped-never 01-15-2002, 08:17 AM When I was reading through this forum I had an feeling that there is not that big difference to other countries.
Here we are maybe a little less equipment oriented. If I want to improve my game I typically concentrate on harder training of footwork and speed instead of finding a better racket.
Recreational baddy is on rise here. I work and play in city with 300000 inhabitants. Compared to four years ago (when there was nothing) we have here 4 places where you may rent a court (alltogeather 11 courts) and it is more and more difficult to reserve one. I am visiting all open tournaments that are less than 100km distant. This gives roughly 15 tournaments a year. We have one profesional coach here available for recreational players. I train with him once a week one hour. Alltogeather I play 5 hours a week in average.
My biggest problem here is that so many players play just with nylon and they do not want to play feather even if I provide it. Honestly speaking I do hate playing nylon.
We have quite the same problems with media attention to badminton as other Europian countries. Ice hockey and football are much more popular here. It is miracle if you see badminton on TV. The last game I have seen on TV was MS World Championship final with Hendrawan vers. Gade...
ever thought about playing in the German league?
ever thought about playing in the German league?
trapped-never 01-16-2002, 12:53 AM No, I am not skilled enough. I started to play badminton 1.5 year ago. I am close to 30... I think about turning to registered player in Czech this autumn.
