View Full Version : Coverage on UK TV!!!
Gade fan 01-12-2002, 04:05 PM Did anyone see the Copenhagen Championship coverage on ITV early hours of this morning. What am excellent and equal levelled match we saw in the mens singles, had you sitting on the edge of your chair right to the very end
Why don't we see more such coverage, and at a better time of the day rather than 2am in the morning!!
I see other articles in this forum cover this same subject, what can we do to get more tv coverage?
Save up and buy a TV station might be the least realistic but best way forward. Badminton is often seen as a pastime, not a 'proper' sport deserving mainstream coverage. I'll have a word with Steve when I see him soon.
Cheung 01-13-2002, 06:49 PM Are snooker and darts deemed 'proper' sports?
nightingale 01-13-2002, 07:13 PM I saw it, thought it was excellent, though not on long enough for my liking, but close to the very end!!
Not sure why there's little coverage on UK TV channels, it's the same on SKY too - very disappointing.
Maybe someone with the right contacts can help build the profile of the sport - it's long overdue..
^shaz^ 01-13-2002, 07:21 PM It was on eurosport in the Uk about 3 times, once at about 5pm, then 2 am then the following day at about 10pm....think they are the ones who cover badminton wel in uk...well in my experience neways
How times have changed. In 70's and part of 80's
come March Saturday and Sunday 2.00pm you can watch
All England live for 4 hours !
I think it is part of trend in UK, nothing comes free, everyone
and everthing must pay their own way. Someone in UK commented that community cntres don't like to rent space to badminton players but prefer masss gatherings.
The IBF gave all their TV rights to a private co. which charges
you US100 for every minute of footage you request.
Latest news is that Baof E will no longer sponsor AE, they are
looking for a sponsor.
johnboy 01-14-2002, 09:30 AM Bit puzzled by your comment that the BA of E will no longer sponsor AE and they are looking for a sponsor,
Yonex have been the main sponsor of this event for the last twenty years or so (although I thinK they may have missed one year about three years ago).
BA of E are constantly looking for sponsors, and have found some, look at the boards around the courts at the AE.
The problem is what can the BAof E offer a sponsor thry can hardly claim huge crowds... last year 20,000 or so turned up and they came from all over the country so a localised sponsor is unlikely to be interested.
The carrot of TV exposure is only relavant if the company wishes to target Denamrk or Asia.
I would suggest that if you want to see Badminton on BBC or ITV you should cajole, threaten and bribe your friends to write to the local, regional and national stations and request coverage.

marshall 01-15-2002, 03:05 PM Yes, because they are an excuse to drink beer while playing. This is not an available option for badminton players, except in Germany, where a club member told me that during most playing times people brought their coolers and took beer breaks outside under the awning between games. I believe him because I saw players having mugs with their lunch or between matches. This was a tournament we were playing in, too. :-)
marshall 01-15-2002, 03:07 PM Good idea. That might get some action.
