maybe u can wear a ankle guard (not sure is that the correct term but i am referring to the cloth type which hugs relatively tight to your ankle) on that volatile ankle next time?

Hope you get well soon..

I used an active ankle (rigid one hinged at the ankle) very light and comfortable and only allows your ankle to move on the joint axis and not go over on its side.

Recommendations:

Treat with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression bandaging, Elevation above the heart. The ICE parts are annoying, but can help in the first few days after the sprain.

Consult your doctor. Consult a good physiotherapist.

Don't rest more than you need to. Keep your ankle moving with gentle activity, provided that it feels stable and is not too painful. You can expect it to be a little sore all the time, but stop your activity if it becomes more painful. Keep it mobile.

If you rest for too long, then you will form scar tissue around your ankle that will never go away. By keeping active you minimise the formation of scar tissue (though there will probably be some). Gentle activity keeps the ligaments flexible and returns them towards their normal condition; without activity, they will "set" like concrete in their current, mangled position.

Wear an ankle support at first, to improve stability of the joint. But stop wearing it once you feel confident that your ankle is stable enough to perform the activity without support. Wearing a support for too long prevents ligaments from learning how to support your ankle again. The purpose of a support is to allow you to be active without risking another sprain; a support does not help the injury heal in any way, other than by protecting it against further sprains.

I know this because I had a bad sprain on my right ankle. Fortunately, I returned to activity as soon as I could. I started playing badminton again -- but very gently! I was walking around the court for months; if a shuttle was to far to reach, I just let the point go.

Be patient, be thorough, and be disciplined. A responsible attitude now will minimise the effects of this injury, and give you the best possible sporting future. A careless attitude now will cripple your sporting future.

You can still practice your strokes without moving around. You can improve that, at least. Either way, keep working on your defense. It's the first thing you lose.

I won a Taekwon-Do tournament in my division with a sprang ankle once. The competition was just sad, but still...;)
