View Full Version : What are the IBF trying to do to badminton?
UkPlayer 01-27-2002, 05:16 PM Saw the Copenhagen Masters.
Boring!
I mean, I admire players like Sigit, and they are exciting, but I found the games were boring, and the commentating ribbish.
I don't want to harp back to the 'good old days' but through the late 80's when I was watching televised badminton in the UK I couldn't get enough of players like Frost or the Sidek.
Now it just seems like table tennis. Bang Bang Bang and it's over. I was left cold.
Why do the IBF want to raise the profile of the sport?
Surely it's popular enough in the far eastern countries not to be changed?
I mean would American football be changed to two halves to make it more pallitable to other countries? No they would not.
If the sport is not being televised in the western countries, altering it's layout is not going to do anything for it.
I think the IBF are making a BIG mistake going along this line.
What's wrong with 15x3???
Please someone explain it to me.

Should read - why do the IBF want to raise the profile of the sport in this manner?
cooler 01-27-2002, 06:03 PM ibf thought (but thought wrong) that the 7x5 format would be more suitable for television because of potentially having more commerical breaks in between games. IBF took a gamble on the format without appreciating how 7x5 format would WRECK the badminton game itself. Lost are the intricacy, the flares, the deceptive shots, and the nail biting comebacks. Now it's just wham, bam thank ma'am. There is NO foreplay.
I apologize if the above description is too graphic for the younger audience. I was just trying to make a point with an analogy.
PS: kwun you may delete this post if you find it inappropriate for this forum. I would not object to it.
UkPlayer 01-27-2002, 07:51 PM LOL I like that, I'm going to use that one tommorow night. Cheers

UkPlayer 01-27-2002, 07:57 PM Oh, and by the way thanks for the information on 5x7 I didn't understand the commercial aspect of it previously. So now I can understand why the chose that format.
I don't think 5x9 would be any better either. After the history of all the 3x15 classics I would have thought they'd leave it alone. It's a lot to sacrifice.
Perhaps they can have 1 minute breaks every 10 minutes for the commercial aspect and no breaks between games. That would be interesting.
giggsy 01-27-2002, 08:03 PM I agree that the 7 x 5 has taken a lot away out of the game. If it is true that the IBF had succumbed to corporate pressures, then they should be ashamed of themselves! Soccer is Big business in the UK, but you dont hear of 3x 30min games for the sake of advertising opportunities!
Taufik Hidayat in an interview said that the 5x7 has somewhat affected his performance as a defensive player who thrives after a long struggle for a wonderful comeback.
Other players I met in Brunei during the Baiduri Open last year expressed similar feelings.
Personally, I still prefer the 3x15- a longer duration for me to arrange and rearrange on-court strategies, to practice skills, and basically to enjoy the sport longer. But of course during my games you dont have commercials being thrown in your face every so often!
cooler 01-27-2002, 09:57 PM  I wish you wouldn't as i'm not taking responsibility for your tomorrow night romance.
badrad 01-27-2002, 10:01 PM Being the poor cousins in North America, I have yet to see a live telecast of a badminton match. Every match that I have seen is taped or delayed broadcast (sometimes only highlights). So in the case of North America, the reason to change the format to allow breaks for commercials are not as important.
Strange comparison. Sports on TV (well, in Europe at least) practically evolves around soccer and little else. Why would they need to change their format then?
And with badminton it wasn't like there was any real corporate pressure. Nobody has blackmailed the IBF into changing the format. They just thought that maybe, maybe, if we do this then more will be televised... And it seems like it didn't make one bit of difference, other than it made the sport less interesting.
cooler 01-28-2002, 11:55 AM if only ibf had consulted with other badminton affiliations or fans instead of huddle among themself and roll the dice.
Mmm... well, I'm not sure if there was any other way than to actually test it under "real-life" circumstances, though.
cooler 01-28-2002, 12:40 PM hey, everyone here in BC knew that it wouldn't work. Beside, ibf did tested for a few tournaments before implementing 7x5 worldwide. I doubt the test tournaments were spectacular success either.
johnboy 01-28-2002, 01:57 PM Depends on ones point of view. Not everybody is against the idea in fact a lot of the players prefer it.
At least the IBF has tried to do something. OK in this instance it looks like it is not such a good idea, but they tried. Criticize and haranque them too much and they well may shy away from attempting other ideas
Yes, it's better than the IBF sitting back and doing nothing - precisely what some have criticised them for. In the test tournaments quite a lot of professionals liked 5x7 (although some didn't). But I think Mag got it right - is it really going to make a difference to getting increased commercial TV coverage? Doesn't look like it, but if you know differently...let's hear it.
I think a lot of people don't like 5x7 because they are too resistant to change, though I have to concede that 5x9 would seem a better compromise. What does everyone think will happen next...?
johnboy 01-28-2002, 06:13 PM Something very politically correct probably. maybe along the lines of lowering the height of the net so as to be fairer for the more vertically challenged amonst us
>>as to be fairer for the more vertically challenged amonst us
What, like yang yang?
Cheung 01-28-2002, 08:37 PM Why wasn't the 5 x 9 expt continued all those years ago?
