the classic Icuk v Swie King World Champiinship game on tape?

I'm willing to pay/trade for this one. If anyone is interested I've got various bits of matches from 87/88 including a full game between Morten/Icuk in the All England finals, and some rare snippets like Sze Yu (Aus) Verus Steve Baddley (Uk) in the commonwealth games.

I'm prepared to buy/trade with anyone from any Country.

I used to have it too until someone borrowed it and taped over it! Absolutely outstanding match with good camera angle. Also great commentary from Kevin Jolly. And Sze Yu.. in the British Airways Masters at the Royal Albert Hall ?? Might still have that one somewhere. Used to have some of the 85 Calgary finals as well. Again victim of third party overtaping! Got them from someone at Hendon BC (R.I.P.) (NW London) many moons ago. Love another copy myself. I'm still in the area so I'll see if I can track a copy down.

Oh man, you've done it now. Kevin Jolly Commentating! The guy used to train down at my local SC.
Sze Yu played at the BA masters, I went to that match, remember it fondly, also had it on tape for a while.
Man, you must be well annoyed with the guy who taped over it!
Are you still neaer Hendon? I'm near a tube station in N.London. So perhaps if one of us tracks it down we can help each other out? I'm asking around all my clubs this week.

Whilst hunting for tapes pls let me know if you come across

any old geezers with tapes form early 80's as I am looking for

old AE matches circa 1980-1983.,featuring Rudy Hartono. Lin Ying/Wu Dixi etc.

If you suceed in helping me I promise to make your day.

Ok - will do. I'm trying footage companies too so I'll see if something springs up.

Just got a reponse
Nothing before 83 I'm afraid
They've got the original 83 swie king/sugiarto match on tape but to get it a)I've got to set up a company and b)it's going to cost upwards of $500. Not very good news.

Which company is this?

Bbn

Must be talking about IBf's licensee TWI or IMG.

A lot of footage in ITN but no response.

Anyway keep looking around clubs, UK player,

worse come to worst if you don't find it in 3 months time, I can

tell you how to get it for nothing.

I actually saw some people in Uk taping Ae matches in late

70's.I wish i knew how to locate them.

If I remember correctly the copy I had was from a Channel 4 transmission on Great Sporting Matches or something. I probably got my copy 1987 or thereabouts if thats any help

Cheung

Yes it was channel 4. Roger somebody or the other was another commentator. Surname "Mills"?

"Look at that jumpsmash by King" I remember him saying..

I had a copy but lost somewhere.... :(

UkPlayer

Oh for Gd's sake, stop making it worse, Roger Mills used to be my coach lol!

Derek Talbot did some great commentating on the All Englands in the late 80's, not least because of the hilarity of some of the comments.

UkPlayer

TWI, they're a footage company based in the UK. They won't sell footage for personal use though.

UkPlayer

Lol that sounds interesting!

I'll keep asking around the clubs.

The guy I had the tapes off before went back to India so no joy there.

Have you thought about getting a group of people together and hiring out a researcher to get these early tapes tracked down?

Cheung
01-30-2002, 09:50 AM
Perhaps you can form a company with some other enthusiasts and then share the costs.

UkPlayer
01-30-2002, 10:10 AM
heh! I was thinking that too Cheung. I wonder how much interest there would be if it was released as a video. 100% quality and complete.

shuttlejunkie

I can sell you a uk company for £59 !!!!

shuttlejunkie
01-30-2002, 01:30 PM
Was that right at the end where he went on " A complete carbon copy of the one he played at 3 all" or something ??

shuttlejunkie
01-30-2002, 01:48 PM
Thinking about it I could probably do one for £20 (simply the government fees)

UkPlayer
01-30-2002, 03:29 PM
lol - one of these off the shelf companies. Thanks I will bear it in mind, it's the licensing fees that are worrying!

kwun
01-30-2002, 03:41 PM
does it need to a be company registered in the UK? surely, among all of us all over the world, someone must have a registered company, no?

but you are right, the biggest hurdle is finding the fund. $500 is a fair amount of money. do we "own" the footage once we bought it? can we copy it and sell it to others to recover the cost?

does the $500 only buy us that one match, or is it the whole tournament?

with so little TV coverage in so many countries, i can see a market for badminton tapes. be it new or old.

kwun
01-30-2002, 03:58 PM
add to my post above:

if, for the $500, we are allowed to legally distribute copies of the tape, then perhaps 10-20 of us can chip in the cost of the tape, we can find someone with a registered company to buy it, and then make copies.

unfortunately, the internet isn't mature to the point that we can set up a video site and download full quality videos. or else that would be a via medium.

I've tracked most of the tapes down to BBc,Radio/TV msia

and possibly in Denmark.

But I'm not allowed to have them because of copyright issues.

Bbn

Don't worry too much about getting hold of videos, fellas.

I know several people who keep hundreds of videos, all

commencing from 1980, when VCRs were commercialised.

Of course it would be next to impossible to get anything before

that because of licensing problems, but who wants to watch

grandad play baddy anyway.

Most of these people are former coaches past 60 or so.

Can Kwun start a video exchange forum where people can

swop videos?Of course one needs to have something to offer

first, just look around for next 3 months or so.

I wasn't essentially given a quote of $500 that's just a very optimisitc guess in retrospect. I was given more of a 'we don't deal with personal enquiries' when I contacted them. I would imagine that it would be more than that, we'd have to approach them for a quote as a limited company to find out.

You don't have to be a uk registered company to get this footage.

The license fees are territorial, so if a group of us from say 3 different countries wanted a copy, we'd have to buy the rights for each country, doesn't sound cheap.

They charge per match as opposed to tournament, but more importantly they charge on a per minute basis.

They also charge based upon how many times it is going to be shown, so if you wanted to own it on video you'd have to buy the commerical rights to it.

I don't think 10-20 people is going to cut it, although it's probably worth getting a quote.

It would be interesting to see how much it would cost us to formulate a 'Classic Matches' tape of several different classic matches, and how many people we'd need to buy it. I think you'd need to hire a commentator too as this is the original footage. If you got the commentated footage it might be different, but then it probably wouldn't be as complete.

I am starting to see why TV stations only put out highlights!

I think you're right about there being a market for badminton videos, but judging from the little evidence I've seen so far, I can see why the intabadfed aren't putting these tapes out.

IBF can't put tapes out because they have given the licence to

TWI !

UkPlayer
01-30-2002, 07:53 PM
Oh dear, how silly of the IBF!!!!

How does the BBC copyright work? Who owns it? Is it that they won't let you copy it or that you have to buy license fees?

UKP

Yes!!

Roger sounded like a carbon copy of himself!

What about those video clips from Stan Biscohf's site?
Aren't those restricted by copyright as well?

Bbn
01-31-2002, 03:39 AM
Here's how I think it works:

1) The BAof E owns rights to Ae recordings. It regularly produces promotional videos of recent AE's.It used to rent/sell 16 mm films to clubs in 70's but no one knows where these films
are now.The Baof E probably doesn't have resources to reproduce old fils, neithet is it feasible because of limited demand.

2) The BBC may have kept some old films but does not reproduce them as there is no demand.

3) The IBF owns rights to IBF tournaments and also makes promotional videos but have given their rights to TWI who only
deal with cos and charge us&100 per minute of footage.Probably same goes for ITN.archives.com.

4) Msia TV will give footage on request to M'sians as a public service but receiver must make an undertaking not to reproduce them or face a penalty.

It seems the only way to get tapes is to hunt around in clubs or if I may suggest to Kwun to start an exchange centre here and encourage more people to join in to widen the available resources.

Ok I have a simple solution.
I haven't read any of these threads so I dont know whats going on here, but how about everyone make a single copy of all their videos, and donate them to me? and I will help compile a library to send out to all of you?? :p
Of course I get to watch all of them first
Anywho... back to more serious matters.
