http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/4/30/sports/s_p60lee.jpg

Malaysian badminton stars (from left) Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong went on a promotion tour for the forthcoming World Championships which will be held in Kuala Lumpur in August. En route to the Singapore Open, they stopped at the Ayer Keroh rest area on the North- South Highway to meet the fans and hand out pamphlets on the world meet.

Got this from thestar.com.my today. Fact that these guys were giving out pamphlets means the organisers should have the minimum, basic info like where buy tickets, who to buy from, how much it's gonna be etc etc etc, no?

How come even after giving World Badminton Championships 2007 a good Google and visiting BAM's website, I still don't find the information I need?

And please don't tell me it's still early because I started planning for AE2007 in October, that was a good 5 months before the actual event and the organisers were able to furnish me with details then...

It's already May and I hope the organisers realise it...

Anyhoo, I would appreciate it if anyone has the faintest idea on how I can get my hands on WC tickets...Maybe it's just my poor 'virtual search' skills that's not getting me anywhere...:D

Finals, I will see on TV.

Watching on the telly will not be exciting than watching live there, once our M'sian players get a point, you can hear the home crowd roaring away like crazy. Go to Bt Jalil, this is the World Championship 2007 we are talking about.

Yes, watching badminton on TV is not the same thing as the real thing. TV is just in 2 dimensions, not 3-D. You also don't get to watch the Malaysian and Indonesian supporters putting on their best act. No where else outside Malaysia and Indonesia can you get such incredible crowd atmosphere. Watching similar matches in Hong Kong is compararatively a very dull experience.

Hallo, I was part of the incredible crowd atmosphere during the 1988 and 1992 Thomas Cup Finals at Stadium Negara, and no World Championships will ever beat that. Was even sitting beside to our overweight leading Malaysian cheerleader (our secret weapon) in 1988, and that was when he wasn't even formally acknowledged by BAM. Now, BAM even allows him to go and hug the players immediately after a match while they are still on court shaking hands.

In the 1988 Thomas Cup Semis between MAS and INA, we were actually outnumbered by the Indonesian supporters 2 to 1 and the score was 0-2 after Misbun and FKK fell. For all intents and purposes, this was Istora Senayan, not Stadium Negara anymore. Indonesian supporters starting showing their "weaponry", their shouts, flags and winning banners. But it didn't matter, our secret weapon went to work when Rashid Sidek took on Ardy Wiranata, a player he had not defeated prior to that night.

Finally, to cap off a memorable night, that great man shouted "Sungkit!!! Sungkit!!!" everytime Cheah Soon Kit was due to unleash his jumping smashes in the final and deciding match. And Cheah and Ong Beng Teong made history to beat Lim Swie King/Bobby Ertanto in 3 games for a come-from-behind 3-2 victory.

Yep, that victory was as much due to our secret weapon as to the fighting spirit of the 1988 squad ..... :D

The Thomas Cup victory 4 years later was better managed, and this time we outnumber the Indonesians. In the critical 4th match ('cos we are guaranteed to lose the 5th one), with the score 2-1 to MAS, there were shouts, singing and dancing even before Cheah/Soo's match against Ricky/Rexy ended. So much so that we could see Soo Beng Kiang and Ricky Subagja's hands tremble during service ...... :D

Anyway, saw my old friend last at S'pore Open semifinals recently, and in the final, was kinda sad seeing him on TV so forlorn when Choong/Lee went down.

Loh,

No problem, I allocated q-finals and semis day already. But we have to be at the stadium quite early (definitely earlier than SG Open) to get good seating.

antz,

Our secret weapon is old already, and most of his "sparring partners" including me are practically "retired". You and your generation should take over.

But if you tell the MAS squad to keep winning, I'm sure the secret weapon will be eternally youthful .....

05-16-2007, 08:06 PM
Haa, the Sifus would say, "The secret is in the incredible crowd atmosphere!!".

Let the atmosphere engulf you, the "extra Chi" from the crowd will automatically raise your voice, whether you like it or not.

But now, and for the past 20 years, raising voices is not enough. Dominate the surroundings with your antics, like our Secret Weapon Friend. You will be considered a sifu yourself when the TV cameras constantly show your antics and the crowd follows your lead.

Even Thailand have their own version of the secret weapon, you can see him during MAS vs THA sepaktakraw matches. Probably the reason we lost to Thailand in Asian Games .....

I've seen Thailand's secret weapon during one of the Thailand Opens in Bangkok. Frankly, it will take much more than dressing in a tiger's garb to dislodge Thailand's pure serenity in the form of a Thai classical dancer.

It is the dance that forces the voices out of the masses ...... so Ants and Erin must learn real quick ....... :p

Indonesian supporters had always been our "most stubborn opponents" since the Stadium Negara days, and if taufik-ist, Indra, Krisna and others beef up their squad, we will find the going "very tough".

No matter, I'm sure my cheerleading captain will figure out "a winning strategy", just completed his "warm-up tournament" at the Asian Junior Championships recently. Too bad, Arif Latif lost narrowly to Chen Long :crying:, so the captain needs to continue "centralized training" and work on his routines to perfection. :D

BTW, the last two years, if I'm not mistaken it was Star Sports that showed the live telecast, not Astro Supersports. Or maybe live telecast this time is taken over by RTM.

samuel, it is not a question of being outnumbered, it is a question of how the group "choreographs its performance" vis-a-vis "the opposition". :p

Having done "battle" with them a few times over the past 25 years, I have a lot of respect with INA supporters in Malaysia, as "fanatical" as they are, they "played" by the rules. And they never waver even if the chips are down. Because of that, I saw more comebacks from INA players than from MAS and CHN players past and present.

Well, for me i will always support MAS players no matter what happens...INA also have my support (they're my 2nd favorite after my country)...as long as they're not playing MAS player then i will shout for them during WC07. Especially TH (LCW's buddy), MK/HS, & all their mixed doubles and women doubles players...

FYI...I was in Atlanta cheering for MIa vs Bang Shoo Yun...since there were not many INA supporters...I was featured by INDO TV several times as the loudest INA supporters and got interviewed by INA reporters...( KOMPAS)
:)..bro huangkwokhau, if you do make it to KL for the WC, hopefully we'll see no less of an effort as you did in Atlanta, more than 10 yrs ago..hehe:p:rolleyes::D;)

..if the atmosphere during the matches will be much different than those in Indonesia's Senayan stadium:confused:..I heard it could be as loud if not louder:eek::p...I remember the atmosphere at SIS during the S'pore Open was nice and loud, but the crowd was much more orderly..

The atmosphere is about the same, Senayan and in Malaysia. Practically every spectator works the atmosphere. Of course, in this year's INA Open, Senayan was pretty muted ..... not so during MAS Open.

In other venues, only a portion of the crowd works the atmosphere, the rest just sit there and applaud quietly. But S'pore Open wasn't that far behind, esp when Ronald Susilo and Kendrick played ..... probably loudest when Kendrick beat CJ and Boonsak slew LD.

..(from what i remember during one of my visit) at least the seating at SIS was still bearable, even if the fans cheered..I wonder what would happen if the same thing were to happen in the Putra Stadium?!?!..Probably those sitting at "unfavorable" seats will have to find open creases in between the cheering fans..:rolleyes::(:p

:D...then i will have to prepare myself a couple of ear plugs:p...But, phew, fortunately, i've reserved the Lower tier seating for Semis and Finals...I can't imagine how the stadium, esp. the Upper tier ones, will be like if any M'sian players reach those rounds..:p
