Haha, I like to think that other sports improve my badminton ;). For example, Volleyball has definately helped my overhead stroke develope as well as baseball as I was a pitcher. Volleyball and basketball also helped my jump and quickness on court. And of course running has helped my cardio. I think that to be a well rounded player in badminton, playing other sports (Cross training) is very benificial.

i read somewhere that kids should learn to play as many sports while they're young to learn basic skills for other sports. an example is like catching a flyball in baseball and catching a football thats over your head. both are in the same motion and very similar. i played basketball a lot during elementary school and when i picked up badminton starting in high school, the footwork i learned in basketball helped a lot in badminton.

Muhahaha I know this stuff from gcse PE.
When you're a child your school is meant to involve you in small ball sports as early on as possible to develop key skills which are the basis of all sports.
English schools
Dance was to develop balance and agility
Gymnastics was to further develop balance and agility
Any small ball sport was to develop hand eye co-ordination
and larger ball sports are to develop other co-ordination
But the way they are taught is a waste of time.
I got into badminton after playing Tennis so i had really good hand eye co-ordination when i first started playing.
And playing badminton has helped my rounders bat swing...

Baseball,

I was playing at University of Texas, at Austin, one of the player came by was talking to me, he told me that he was Tan Joe Hoek*(sp?) former classmate at Rice university in Houston..

later, I found out from this guy that Tan was offered a scholarship for baseball ( pitcher) by baseball coach, once the coach found out that Tan was World champion in Badminton.

I asked why badminton player was offered to trial for baseball,
his asnwer was "STRONG WRIST"

*Tan Joe Hoek was international caliber player before Rudy Hartono.

believe it or not, in the athletics too, since I started badminton, my reflexes have gottten alot better (faster)
And in the 100m sprints, I find my self start sprinting about 10milliseconds before the other people, this gives me an edge and a better chance to accelerate before the others...

I find that martial arts help a lot for a multitude of sports. My reflexes were much sharper in my Taekwon-Do days. Reflexes, speed, coordination, cardio, you name it. If you practice any kind of full-body sport you're bound to develop skills needed in others.

I really enjoyed the advantage jump-kicks gave me in soccer.:D I could kick the ball before anyone in my class could even touch it with their heads...
