PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Kuan Beng Hong marched into the quarter-finals of the US$250,000 China Masters in Beijing yesterday but Mohd Roslin Hashim's challenge came to an end.

The 22-year-old Beng Hong, seeded fifth, slogged to beat 20-year-old Chinese Li Yu 15-7, 4-15, 15-9 in the second round to set-up a meeting with world number five Bao Chunlai.

The odds are stacked against Beng Hong in his meeting with Chunlai after losing to the lanky Chinese in their four previous meetings.

Veteran Roslin failed to go through to the quarter-finals when he went down 15-10, 3-15, 12-15 to Denmark's Niels Christian Kaldau.

In the men's doubles, Malaysia will have two representatives in the quarter-finals.

Seniors Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah defeated Chinese Gu Jian-Lu Jian 15-9, 15-8 to set up a meeting with the top seed Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China in the quarter-finals.

Both pairs have met three times with the Malaysian winning twice.

This time, the Chinese will be the favourites as Wan Wah has yet to fully recover from a knee injury.

Malaysia's back-up pair of Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif also did well to reach the last eight. The duo defeated Chinese He Hanbin-Gong Weijie 15-13, 5-15, 15-6.

They will take on China's young pair Guo Zhendong-Xie Zhongbo who upset third seed Sang Yang-Zhengbo 15-11, 15-12 in the second round yesterday.

World junior champions Hoon Thein How-Tan Boon Heng however crashed out in the second round after going down 6-15, 3-15 to Japan's top pair of Tadashi Ohtsuka-Keita Masuda.
