Lin Dan takes men's singles title at badminton China Masters

BEIJING (AP): World No. 1 Lin Dan of China battled pastcompatriot Bao Chunlai 15-6, 15-13 Sunday to win the men's singles title at the inaugural badminton China Masters.

Olympic champion Zhang Ning took three sets to beat Zhou Mi 11-3, 5-11, 11-3 in the women's singles final, another all-Chinese affair.

Lin's win was a form of consolation after being thwarted in his run at a first world championship title by Indonesia's Olympic Champion Taufik Hidayat in the finals of last month's Badminton World Championships in Anaheim.

"Only victory could prove my world number one ranking. The final was tough but I won," said Lin, who showed his trademark exuberance on the court and fell to his knees after the final point.

Zhang said she felt all of her 30 years on the court, but is still angling to recover her top ranking with more victories.

"I never thought of my age on court. I still feel full of energy. But today I really felt tired," Zhang said.

"The idea of retiring has yet to come to my mind," she added. (**)
