View Full Version : Music while Badminton?!
oneshot_onekill 09-09-2005, 09:04 AM Had anyone tried playing badminton while listening to music?
I just got the idea if i listened music during games i might be in better mood and perform better...
Got any ideas?
restricted_ 09-09-2005, 09:26 AM i thought of it before. haha. but didn't try it though.
oneshot_onekill 09-09-2005, 09:28 AM i think im gonna try it in my next trainnin ^^
Andy05 09-09-2005, 10:58 AM I tried it before with a MP3 player but it kept falling out of my pockets when i smashed.
But i haven't tried with a proper CD player at the side of the court, yet.
If u try put a song u hate on repeat and play someone and see the score. Then put on a song that gets u psyched (eye of the tiger) lol. and play the same person again.
ribroy 09-09-2005, 11:26 AM If I play on a Wednesday the sports centre has keepfit classes on court 1 with badminton on 3 and 4. I really dislike playing when they have the music on. The music is very loud and overpowers hearing almost the hardest shots.

If you need a good mood, go watch a funny movie or tv before you go to your gym. If you need a even better meed, smoke a joint outside before you play. I really think music and badminton does not mix when you have 6+ courts in a gym. Also, If you play double, you would not be able to hear your partner untill your expensive racquet clide with his/her then you cry "WHYME! WHY ME!"
madbad 09-09-2005, 12:36 PM I wonder if players hear music as "music" or just "noise". I mean would a noisy non-music environment bother you? Kinda like at big pro tournaments where there is crowd noise.
fast3r 09-09-2005, 03:22 PM Quite often in my club we do training routines and shadow with music, sometimes even playing sets with the music. I quite like it as it makes the training seem less serious and also it dispels the feeling of emptiness in the hall. I hate playing when it's just me and my opponent in the hall
smash_master 09-09-2005, 04:17 PM I remember one time when i went to play a saw a guy playing he had his mp3 on his arm with one of those holding bands, anyways i have played with music before but just not like that like with an mp3 players or minidisk but with like a cd player off court just blasting. We had some techno going so nice beat and all that i found that i really got into it and felt alot better...although i was like moving my body and getting into it between every point

Well, there was this idea/theory that came up quite a while ago -- that if you put on, say an exciting music in your head( not necessarily physical music ), you tend to move as according to that music's paste. However, it is better to select a song that you don't know the lyrics to ( or else you might be concentrating too much on the lyrics of the song but not the game ;) ). All you need to do is follow the rhythm. I've heard that if you put on an exciting music, it improves your quickness on court ... hmmm ... anyone care to try it out  ?
oneshot_onekill 09-09-2005, 10:22 PM yeah i will try it out... though havnt got like mp3.. maybe i will just plug speakers into my cd player :P
but that way.. my opponment will play better as well hahaha
wedgewenis 09-09-2005, 10:30 PM if you have an mp3 player you should use it when you work on your singles footwork - it makes it alot better :D
music is good for training.. doing drills / practicing
i dont think it should be on during games / matches
Wizbit 09-09-2005, 10:54 PM The only music you need in a badminton court, is there already. Next time when you play, before you enter the gym/hall, stand outside and listen to the beautiful sounds; the 'squish' of the shoes on indoor surface, the booming smash sounds, the 'dink' of the delicate drop shot, the 'woop' of a high underhand clear, the rhythm of the game...whether is it a quick one or slow one. That's if there were people playing before you! Go make your own beautiful music on court ;)

SomeDudeInBlue 09-10-2005, 12:44 AM We were at an opposing school during a school game. When we had the courts to warm up, they started playing hip hop and other song for us while we warmed up before teh games started. It was distracting to me because I would just start singing to it and mess around lol

But of course  ... Which is why I highly recommend you guys to choose a quick-paced music without lyrics, or one that is unfamiliar to you so you won't be concentrating on the lyrics. All you have to do is listen to the quick rhythm and try to reflect the rhythm on court.
oneshot_onekill 09-11-2005, 05:11 AM can anyone give any examples of music? artist?

Work OK for me during worm-up. But when playing I wouldn't like the music. To me it's sometimes as important to hear how the opponent hits the shuttle, as it is to see it....just by the sound I can decide where the shuttle will go.
But before games, do what ever makes you happy. I use to listen to music, or sleep:D

pengu1ns 09-11-2005, 02:05 PM I wouldnt recommend playing music while playing a game, not least because the other players may not want the distraction, but you may well find you automatically start hitting the shuttle in time to beats, which may well have a negative influence on your game.
It is true however that if you listen to certain tracks BEFORE you start playing you can feel more energetic and speedier. In fact ive got a couple of tracks that i have for that exact purpose, although i dont rely on it, it may well be mainly psychological.
EEEK forgot to mention, music should make repetitive training etc seem shorter because less of your attention is on what you are doing, so you dont notice it. I do this when doing long, simple excercises that i dont need to concentrate to complete
DarthHowie 09-14-2005, 10:59 AM music should only be for training, warm ups, cool downs...
music while playing a game is a no no.
Music that mostly doesn't have lyrics would be dance/techno/trance.
What i listen too: Ministry of Sound, Tiesto are some examples.
ViningWolff 09-15-2005, 08:52 AM The gym where I hold my annual tounrey is wired for sound - so we have music going the whole tourney via an Mp3 player or laptop.
The response has been overwhelming positive, thoughwe do have to keep an eye on the volume (the one corner can get get a little loud).
I liek having music going while I'm playing/training.
BoboTheBadder 09-15-2005, 05:11 PM I always listen to Sugarcult's "Memory" before playing baddy if I wanna feel pumped up for it that day. It's just kind of one of those songs. ;)
BethuneGuy 09-15-2005, 05:56 PM When I want to calm myself down or breath properly, I sing the "Why do birds, suddenly appear" song, I forgot the name. But it was so catchy, I heard it during a movie. Now, I recite it when I play lol.

MouZe 09-16-2005, 03:47 AM Hmm, its okay for warmups indeed. But not for the games. I tried it lately, but after 4 min, i turned it off. Reason is because i automatically tried to hit the shuttle on the beat of the song. it messed up my rythm.
Daylightkiller 09-16-2005, 09:44 AM I tried it, got good rhythm but the wires got in the way, when i played on speakers i played pretty good but pissed of my opponent:p
smash_master 09-16-2005, 06:21 PM ok well i dont think it would be bad for playing in a game cause you might not even relize that theres music playing in the 1st place. heres an example well happened today so anyways we had "IB friday" and well time to do Projects and all that so i start listening to some music and doing physics what happens i do the physics fine and i completly forgot that i was listening to the music until i actually stopped for a few minutes and relized that it was on and i had missed so many songs. the same happened in badminton at the begining i would hear the music but as the game progressed it kinda faded out and i could only notice it once in a while, was nice when i made a error it would keep me from thinking to much about it like going all negative. unless its something annoying then im sure you will be more aware that it is playing.
tinkerbella122 09-16-2005, 09:12 PM The main focus while playing a match should be the match itself. If you can hear the music, you are probably not concentrating on the match enough. In that case, you should not listen to music while playing a match for it counteracts with the purpose and act more of a menace

but okay, only music for warming up/training. What kind of music? artists?

I'd say any kind of quick-paced and exciting music, so that it motivates you to move quicker.

oneshot_onekill 09-18-2005, 04:16 AM i like it... still havnt tried practicing with music though... next week definitly

Its true that while you may be distracted by the music, its good practice to play games while music is playing. Why? Because when you play away matches, or tournaments, they might be played in unfamiliar surroundings, this might include different lighting, courts with extra markings, and halls with a lot of noise. The music helps you to adapt to your surroundings
theasiandude88 09-18-2005, 07:56 AM i think the other people will find it distracting and annoying because some guy had to do a experiment on music while playing badminton. just imagine playing badminton with the news or classical music, it'll be like ridiculous. i agree with the people above that the mind should be on the game, however i believe the mind should be 95% on the match, 5% outside. why 5% outside? well dont forget that there might be some idiot running across the court and you dont want to break your racquet by hitting the fool. this is one example, and im sure there are plenty more to come.

What are the chances of that ... ?

Different people see things differently; a person's trash might be another person's treasure ;). If the music distracts you, then turn it off. If it doesn't, *shrugs* it's your preference and decision :).

This does work... we were having so 70's music playing during a match.. and I found myself having very improved footwork.. DISCO ANYONE??? lol!! :)

But what if the place is a different hall, with lots of noise, different light, slippery court, maybe its hard to concentrate. Thats why its good to practice with distractions, because when you come to play in a tournament you will be used to be playing with extra noise etc. Think how annoying it would be if u were a pro with a whole load of people cheering for your opponent. Much more annoying than playing while some guy soes an expt with music.
silentheart 09-20-2005, 03:14 PM Hi Fast3r,
You want to distruction while you practice? Why? I can not usderstand your reason.
1) If you play in a gym with several courts, are you turning off the distrucions from other court?
2) If you got use to the music, what happen when you play in the final when everyone is quiet while you play.
3) If you play in a bad condition and got use to it (ie, slippery court), you will need adjustment when you play in a match with good condition where you will trip because the court does not slip anymore.
Sorry...

I mean not always to have distraction, just sometimes, so when you have distraction in a tourny you know what its like:)
DinkAlot 09-20-2005, 03:49 PM Had anyone tried playing badminton while listening to music?
No need for me, hearing the shuttle go "BOOOOOM!!!" is music to my ears. :p :D
crosstrainer 09-21-2005, 08:53 PM back here in manila, they sometimes play music over the revamped PA system in Olympic Badminton Club. They usually start pumping the music around 10pm when people start to leave, and the massive complex of 20 courts starts to feel empty.
They play songs like "September" by Earth Wind and Fire, and we just dig it! It revitalizes everyone on court, and even people waiting for their cue - you can see them tapping their feet or nodding their head to the beat. Music is loud enough to be *enjoyed* but not overpower everything else, like the sweet WHAPACK of a sweet-spot smash, and the *gentle* murmurings between partners trying to figure out how to defeat their opponents.
Even when on court, you can feel yourself quite relaxed and you tend to forget your fatigue, and it makes for a much more pleasant badminton experience, for me at least. Conversely, there are some (minute minority) who dislike music when playing, and these usually are the cranky ones, on and off the court.. hehehehe.
Deathmetal music = headache
"Jologs" Songs (sucky filipino pop music) = makes me wanna tear down the speakers :D
Sentimental/Classical music = zzzz....
Trance/Chillout music = great badminton experience
Tasteful Pop/R&B/some retro music = great badminton experience
badminton should always be fun, whether you're winning or losing, or practically killing yourself training. Music can help you lighten your load :)
