How far this young Indonesian pair can go?
I saw them play for the first time on 2005 Indo Open final. What a play! They were amazing. Dahsyat!
"Untuk bola-bola tipis, Markis dan Hendra memang yang terbaik," said MD coach Herry Iman Pierngadi in Tabloid Bola. Meaning : Markis and Hendra are the best for "bola-bola tipis" (steep shots?).
The Malaysian pair they beat on the semifinal looks so frustrated with Markis/Hendra's attacks. Even Candra and Sigit had no answers for their amazing shots. Until now they have beaten almost all best MD pairs in the world such as Cai/Fu, Sigit/Candra, Jonas/Lars, and Tony/Howard in several tournaments.
It was indeed a huge dissappointment for them when they failed to participate in the 05 WC. But I think it was also *a blessing in disguise*. The failure did give them the highest motivation to prove themselves.
"Kami bertekad untuk meraih gelar sebanyak-banyaknya," say Markis Kido to Seputar Indonesia daily newspaper. (Translation : "We eager to win titles as many as we can.")
"Kami ingin membuktikan bahwa kami layak dikirim ke turnamen berkelas seperti kejuaraan dunia." ("We wish to prove that we deserve to be sent to world-class tournament such as the World Championship").
Time will tell, but I do believe that Markis Kidho (not Kido)/Hendra Setiawan have the potential to be the future world champion!

Very true indeed, i can see the exploding aura from this pair. They are 100% capable of becoming the next Candra/Sigit if not better.

Ya, I hope so. Hendra Setiawan have excellent smash in front of the net. Not just fast and powerful, but the angle is just unbelievable. It's remind me of similar shots by Park Joo Bong. Excellent! Can't wait to see their next action.
Hope they continue to perform their best everytime they play.

I remember after they won the Indo Open final, they were asked whether they are ready to be the next World Champion or not. "Siap jadi Juara Dunia?" (Are you ready to be the World Champion?) and both of them (Hendra, followed by Kidho) said "Siap" (Ready)... Well, I just hope that they will do their best and be the next World Champion just like their seniors before... Btw, were they semi-finalist or the finalist of the World Junior Championship in 2000?

Markis/Hendra will be sent to compete in the coming Holland Open and Denmark Open 2005. They will also be going to the SEA Games in Manila.
However, it seems that Rudi Hartono is still skeptical about the pair. He said that their victory at the Indo Open was because it happened that they faced Candra/Sigit (an old pair) and it was held in Jakarta. Plus the fact that the Chinese pairs were not even there. The test will come in the Denmark or China Open and he expected that they WIN at least either one tournament to show that they really can become Indonesia's no 1 pair.
Oh come on....it will be tough for any pair to win at Denmark or China Open and u expect them to win AT LEAST one? In my opinion, a semi-final placing in the 5* and 6* rated tournaments and a top 5 ranking by the end of the year will be a good achievement for this young pair.
I am thinking that he's being too demanding and a little unfair! What about Luluk/Alven....they haven't even won a single tournament yet this year. Let alone Flandy/Eng Hian, whom I think should retire since last year's Olympic.
I do agree that the real test will come in the Thomas Cup. I am pretty confident that they can beat China's second pair of Sang Yang/Zheng Bo. However, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun will be a tougher nut to crack. But the same thing apply to other Indo pair. They seem to have difficulty playing against this Chinese pair.
This is the quote from the article in Bola.

I don't think so. As far as know, Markis Kidho and Hendra Setiawan were just paired up in 2003. It was Christian Hadinata who "menjodohkan mereka." Before that Markis used to be paired with Hendra Riyadi, didn't he?

Another media say it differently. It is said that Sutiyoso told Markis and Hendra, "Prepare yourself for the Thomas Cup."
Most likely Markis/Hendra will be included in the TC team. Good for them !

Maybe Rudy Hartono said so just to motivate Markis/Hendra further, so that Markis/Hendra will have another 'proving ground' after the Indo Open. :)

Ups sorry, it's a typo. Markis Kidho's former partner is Hendra A Gunawan, who is now paired with Joko Riyadi.

No matter what had happened, Indonesia double players are fearsome and unpredictable in their tactic. Their players can combination well and switching partners even make them more unpredictable.
Their young players keep on making names in the world badminton arena. Other than Malaysia, the rest still have a lot to catch up. Else, in years to come we will see the same scenario as to what had happened to F1, the race is dominated by a few driver. We will see that the sport is losing its popularity.

Berlatih Menggunakan Bola "Kura-Kura"
Written by Kompas
Thursday, 19 July 2007

Training with "Turtle" shuttlecock
Written by Kompas
Thursday, 19 July 2007
Jakarta, kompas -Different with the other 2 doubles pairs, Luluk Hadiyanto & Alvent Yulianto and Joko Riyadi & Hendra AG, Markis Kido & Hendra Setiawan did not attend the Philippines Open which was held on July 17-22. Instead they are focusing on the upcoming World Championships, August 13-19, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
"We are indeed being prepared to play in the World Championships", remarked Kido, on Wednesday (07/18), who competed last weekend in the China Masters and advanced to the Final.
In that tournament, Kido & Hendra lost in the Final against the host's MD pair, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, the opponents whom they defeated when they won the 2006 China Open.
For the upcoming World Championships, Kido stated, the training program he and Hendra take will focus on strength. This matter is being worked on to anticipate the "slower" speed of the shuttlecock, which is usually the case in Malaysia.
"In Malaysia, the shuttelcock is usually heavier/slower, so our strength must be increased, beside having a strong defense. In order for us to play with a heavier shuttlecock, during training, the shuttlecock feathers' tips are being bent(out)", added Kido.
Last yr, Kido/Hendra became a main focus from their competitors after winning titles in 2 tournaments in only a month, which were the HongKong and China Open. But it wasn't until in China Masters, last weekend, where Kido and Hendra were able to reach the Finals.
Besides Fu & Cai, Kido said, Koo Kien Keat & Tan Boon Heong and Candra Wijaya & Tony Gunawan are the toughest opponents which he'll face in Malaysia. "Luluk and Alvent have also played better", added Kido, who defeated his seniors in the semifinals of China Masters.
On top of the World Championships, Kido & Hendra's appearance this yr will be their second time after attending last yr in Madrid, Spain. At that time Kido & Hendra were eliminated in the Quarter Final, losing against Anthony Clark & Robert Blair (England).
Overall, Indonesia failed to win even 1 title just like what happened in the 1999 and 2003 World Championships.
*Boy, i can imagine, that must be some real slow birdies being hit.:p

Apparently they met when they were recruited in Pelatnas and both of them from Jaya raya club.
before that markis Kido was born in Bekasi and started playing at PB Dian Jaya ( Bekasi before moving to Jaya Raya.)
Now Richasari is a coach of PB Purnama in Solo...
He is a big fan of Thierry Henry ( Barcelona)....

well...now we know he cheated his age ( as per Krisna's )...if paper said that they has been together for 8 yrs, now MK is 23 yrs old and GF is one year younger (22) so basically they have been dating when MK was 15 and GF was 14....very unusual age for dating especially for Indonesians..if I use Krisna's so MK is 25 or 26 and GF is 24 or 25...otherwise it is too young for his GF to be a coach as 22 oyrs of age,,...
Hahahah.... thats true.. kekeke.. well as many has mentioned in the other thread about age cheating.

As I knew Richasari was from Tangkas. She was recruited in to Pelatnas in 2002 (or early 2003) and droped in end of 2003 (in this periode a lot of players less than 1 years stayed in Pelatnas, included Andre Kurniawan). Interesting to watch, why a lot of players from Solo and arround choose to join Jakarta clubs instead of Djarum that near from Solo. I noticed Icuk, Joko, Bambang, Nova Widianto, Hendry/Wandry Kurnia Saputra, Eny Erlangga, Eny Widowati, Richasari until junior player Nandang Arif. Also players from Tegal and arround, Simon Santoso, Hendra Setiawan & Heny Budiman.
Djarum has strong relation with players from Surabaya and arround, Maria Kristin (Tuban), Alan B.K., Yohan H.K., Minarti Timur, Sylvinna Kurniawan, Shendy Puspa, Holvy De Pauw, Arif Rasidi (Surabaya), Chindana Hartono, Wiwis Meyliana (Tuluangagung), Ari Yuli Wahyu (Kediri). Also the Palembang players Fran Kurniawan, Fernando Kurniawan, Chandra Kowi, Yulianti, Lili Siswanti, Debby Susanto, M. Ahsan.
Suryanaga and other clubs around Surabaya had strong relation with players from Yogyakarta and arround, Tri Kusharyanto, Finarsih, Aprilia, Fauzi Adnan.

Interesting to watch, why a lot of players from Solo and arround choose to join Jakarta clubs instead of Djarum that near from Solo. I noticed Icuk, Joko, Bambang, Nova Widianto, Hendry/Wandry Kurnia Saputra, Eny Erlangga, Eny Widowati, Richasari until junior player Nandang Arif. Also players from Tegal and arround, Simon Santoso, Hendra Setiawan & Heny Budiman.
Djarum has strong relation with players from Surabaya and arround, Maria Kristin (Tuban), Alan B.K., Yohan H.K., Minarti Timur, Sylvinna Kurniawan, Shendy Puspa, Holvy De Pauw, Arif Rasidi (Surabaya), Chindana Hartono, Wiwis Meyliana (Tuluangagung), Ari Yuli Wahyu (Kediri). Also the Palembang players Fran Kurniawan, Fernando Kurniawan, Chandra Kowi, Yulianti, Lili Siswanti, Debby Susanto, M. Ahsan.
Suryanaga and other clubs around Surabaya had strong relation with players from Yogyakarta and arround, Tri Kusharyanto, Finarsih, Aprilia, Fauzi Adnan.
Newspaper said that Richasari was from jayaraya....markis mentioned that they both were from Jayaraya club....so which one is right???

Kido and Hendra both ARE from Jaya Raya, the club owned by Ir. Ciputra, one of INA's property tycoons.
There are 4 articles profiling Markis Kido: his background, hobby and comments from Coach (Sigit Pamungkas).
I don't think Kido cheated age that much...I presume he's at most 25
Hopefully, Kido's achievement could spur Bona Septano and Pia Zebadiah to train harder so that they can be on par with their older brother. I have a feeling Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan could follow Kido/Hendra's footstep in becoming a world class MD pair  Both are only 20 this year.

MK should be 25-26.. I don't see many Badminton players of 22-23 years old who can execute so powerful and deceptive smash..
BWF can't do anything about it? Age cheating is a serious issue in sports.

Fu's only 23, and he's got the biggest hammer in MD. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, he's been smashing his signature bombs since 2002-2003, when he was only 19.

That's just a direct translation from his Indonesian name "Heng De La" -- Hendra. I am not sure if he does have a Chinese name like Candra Wijaya or Tony Gunawan. The other younger generation INA shuttlers (Simon Santoso, Sylvinna Kurniawan) do not seem to have Chinese names as well.

You need to watch 2007 WC Final match or 2008 Beijing Olympics Final.
INA style is quite different with CHN and KOR. Esp. look at Nova, Chandra, Taufik; they are great technicians, they can manage all kinds of shots with limited movement; on the contrary, due to their limited techniques, KOR and CHN should move a lot in the court.
Kido has a long problem with his knee and now it's got serious. You can't play like the past with this problem; even in top matches, very small problem makes very different result.
They did very well but the problem is the injury; many other players have retired due to the injuries. Don't need to say bad to Kindra. :)

Kido's job is to be in the back hammering smashes down like a madman. If his knee doesn't work, he can't get it done. BCL doesnt' have to be jumpsmashing for his job as much though, so he can rely on other strategies.

According to Kompas website, the stocky Markis has high blood pressure and had even fainted once during physical training.
Following advice from coach Sigit Pamungkas, Markis has now been ruled out from the world meet, which will begin in Hyderabad, India, on Monday.
On Wednesday, it was also confirmed that the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) had notified the Badminton World Federation (BWF) of Markis-Hendra’s withdrawal.
This is not the first time that Markis has faced such a setback. He was laid low by a knee injury and even took time off from training following the death of his father early this year.

Markis might be still not in because of that (his father passway, knee injury, etc). But I really feel sorry to Hendra that cannot join in the big events. I think right now he is so frustrated because of it. PBSI must search another player for Hendra ASAP.
Anyway, I still prefer Hendra paired with Markis if Markis still have motivation in this sport.
Anyway, I wish the best for them.

Olympic champs may boycott Paris
SINGAPORE: Indonesia’s Olympic and former world badminton doubles champion Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan are threatening to boycott this month’s World Championships in Paris over a row with their national federation.
The duo, ranked second in the world, are upset because the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) failed to enter them in the China Masters, a leg of the lucrative Super Series tour.
“If we can’t play, then we won’t represent our country in the world meet,” Markis told the Jakarta Globe.
“In our contract with our sponsor, the worlds is not a mandatory event but the China Masters is.
“We were ready to play in Paris and represent our country. In fact, we were going to use our own money just to get there. But I think we have to think things over now.”
The PBSI said the 2007 world champions had failed to file the proper paperwork and therefore could not be entered for the China Masters, which takes place from Sept 14-19.

For China Master, they were excluded by PBSI, althougt they already register thru their club.
Somehow their province association didn't send it to PBSI.

KinDra played an evenly match to CaiFu in WC SF until they give up and let the CHN pair crush them by 5 consecutive points in the 1st set and 8 cnsecutive points in the 2nd set both happened after they're level (1st set : 16-16 & 2nd set : 13-13). How could it be ???

Very effective chinese strategy of keeping HS out of the rally. CY/FHF'd rather lift to MK than to tempt HS at the net. Since CY/FHF are defending exceptionally well, MK will eventually gives up the attack. MK was also too happy power smashing to mix in a few drops.
Surprisingly, FHF/CY has become a lot more balanced. Quite a few points with CY at the back. I'd say that while we finally have the good old MK back, the chinese pair has evolved.
Despite the lost, I think that match was a spectacle! Definitely a match to remember. Best rally is 13-13.

I wouldn't be so surprise about that because i already thought that they're much more balance pair compare to KinDra, LYD/JJS & KKK TBH. They just simmillar with Ricky/Rexy of 90's who also good to play either in front and back.

Why is Markis Kido partnering Sigit Budiarto in Indonesian Grand Prix? Is Hendra Setiawan injured?HS does want to play with MK anymore.......just kidding :)
On a serious note, MK is not at the level to play with HS anymore but its just my opinion. Having said that, it also wont be easy to find a replacement for MK especially after they resigned from pelatnas and signed a contract with Flypower.
I guess its not like the time back in the 90s and early 2000 where 5 of INA top MD players (RM, SB, TG, CW and HH) can switch around partners and performed really2 well.

how do you mean by MK is not at the same level as HS?i mean i've noticed their performances have dropped quite drastically since 08 (due to the high blood pressure ,etc ,etc.) but i think the problem lies within their performances individually, they're not as tactically aware as they were in PBSI...i watched their AE semis against LP/JR this year and quite frankly hendra isnt as threatening at the net anymore and kido's smashes arent as lethal as before either...and the overall picture or INA's MD is really quite worrying...ahsan/bona isnt as good as we all expected having only won philiphines GPG...sigh...sigh...i wish the top 5 players you mentioned were 10 yrs younger...

Well as far as i can see HS is still the best player in the net evidently in all recent matches including the TC final againts CY/FHF most of the points scored started with HS moves on the net, i can see the fear and respect of CY/FHF towards HS. IMO HS drop, interception, cross net, net kill are second to none. On the other hand MK smashes are easily returned and oppponents even gave him chances to smash and smash until he droped death or make mistake. MK number of mistake are too high for me. It is a tactic that was intentionally played. Another example of MK decline is the latest result in the INA GP where he partner SB and lost to Moh Ahsan/Bona Sep straight set, it really shows the level where MK is now belong. Sorry if i sound discrediting MK here, its just my opinion. And by no mean playing down his great achievements down the years, Im really greatful to witness such talent of the chubby master :)

Just watched their video against Ko/Yoo in Macau.
Im pity with HS..coz MK keep want to make trick shot but fail and also too many unforced error from MK when HS played so awesome in net shot..and also MK look underestimating the KOR pair..
hope MK realized that! :(
Just wonder if HS didnt accompany MK to leave pelatnas..HS can pair with Ahsan..still remember when Ahsan replaced MK in SC09,HS/Ahsan troubled CY/FHF in 3 sets
Will HS back to pelatnas?
apparently..no one can pair and has the same level play with HS instead of pelatnas player, Ahsan should be!

Its so obvious that looking at the performance and sesult from Denmark Open 2010 that MK needs to be replaced if HS to have any chance of glory once again. I took a note and OMG i cant believe how many unforced error that MK made its like mirror the points that HS created. I hope HS still have the motivation to win again, and if so he should realise to find another new bomber.
Its a different story/argument with Tony Gunawan (arguably the best net player ever) could win with different partners, i would say TG would also find it hard to win (at the top level) should he partner MK. Its a shame that perhaps MK suffered big injury blow and now is not the same player as he was before, i hope he also realise that and let HS find a new partner. Whether MK likes it or not HS is still INA best hope for OG gold in 2012 (unless ofcourse the new MD pairs improve a lot in the next 2 yrs or so)

With 3 Major Titles in the pocket, these are the titles they have yet to win (in order of importance):
All-England
Indonesia Premier SS (they won the Open version and it will be nice if they can win the first INA Premier SS)
Singapore SS (closest to home, yet, they could only reach the SF and F in the past two years)
India SS (new event, upgraded from GPG)
Korea Premier SS (with the chilly winter condition in Korea, it's unlikely they can win it)
I believe Kido/Hendra will still compete at the London Olympics 2012 (only 28 yo then). So, they have at least 2 more chance at the AE title.

Coach pelatnas badminton men's doubles, Sigit Pamungkas certainly would resign from Pelatnas Cipayung, East Jakarta.
Chairman of Development of Achievement PB PBSI Lius Pongoh in Jakarta, confirmed the news that the coach who brought Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan won gold medals 2008 Beijing Olympics that will come out of Cipayung.
"True, he had spoken to me and Chris (Kasubid Pelatnas, Christian Hadinata) about it," said Lius are contacted in Jakarta as quoted by Antara on Wednesday (8 / 12).
According to the Lius, Sigit PB Jaya Raya asked his club to keep the 2012 Olympic gold medal chances in the pair Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan who had already left the hostel Cipayung in late 2009.
In an award ceremony for the success of the Jaya Raya Kido / Hendra won the gold medal Asian Games in Guangzhou last week, Sigit said that the 2012 London Olympic medal chances remain to couples who fosterage since 2001 it.
But then, Sigit not yet sure whether he will be out of Pelatnas to handle fully no.3 men's doubles world rankings. "Just wait for further news," he said some time ago.
Kido who contacted separately claimed to be happy if true Sigit will be back to handle it. "O happy, because he had often trained me," said Kido who were playing in Hong Kong Super Series. Besides Kido / Hendra, Sigit also help couples Flandy Limpele / Eng Hian won bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

January, Sigit Handle Kido / Hendra Again
Thursday, December 9, 2010 | 21:55 pm
JAKARTA, Kompas.com - Pelatnas Cipayung Coach, Sigit Pamungkas, will fully handle the pair Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan from January 2011.
"I will begin to actively train Kido / Hendra in January. Maybe i will submit my resignmnet letter in the fourth week of December," Sigit said here on Thursday (9/12/10).
As reported earlier, Sigit will resign from Pelatnas Cipayung to handle Kido / Hendra, who left Pelatnas at the end of 2009.
Although not yet submitted a letter of resignation, Sigit Pelatnas first entered in 1998, claimed to have been socialized resignation to a board, coaches and athletes in Cipayung.
"In principle they accept because I was out also for the sake of badminton. I see Kido / Hendra is also committed, with a note that I have to deal with," he said.
He said his mission to return to Kido / Hendra is the 2012 London Olympics.
"They're still more likely because I see a map of power will still be the same as now. The rival is still that the same thing," he explained.
Sigit also promised not just release the players care (men's doubles) in Pelatnas. He asked his successor will be able to work together on these players.
"I want to Bambang (Supriyanto, Pratt Pelatnas doubles coach) if he went up to double major, so do not be offended if I give such direction to the Bona / Ahsan. Bambang not mind," said Sigit.
Sigit Pelatnas began his career in 1998 as an assistant coach, to then double handle Pratt in 2000.
In 2002 he handled the couple Flandy Limpele / Eng Hian towards the 2004 Olympics, which successfully won the bronze medal. In 2005 he came out of Cipayung and handling Jaya Raya Club, before it was recalled to Pelatnas in 2007 to the present.
Throughout his career dealing with Kido / Hendra, Sigit managed to bring the pair won the world title (2007), Olympic (2008) and the Asian Games (2010).

MK/HS proved my doubts about them being to sustain their performance wrong again! Congratulations on defeating Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae 21-19; 23-21 and with that performance they are definitely top class, no argument. And I was saying the exact opposite yesterday, LOL. Makes me a fool now.

They have proven that without Sigit, they can still beat their arch-rival Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae, this time round in straight-sets.
Having beaten Fang Chieh-Min/Lee Sheng-Mu and Jung/Lee twice in a row, now, it's time to even the scores with Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng and Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen.
Hopefully, the INA pair can peak at the AE 2011.

Another very good performance by MK in the HK SS. I feel like a fool now making bad comments about him, he has proven me wrong. In fact, it looks like HS lost a bit (not much) of his magic touch. With a bit of more luck they could win HK SS.

HS was not focus yesterday and HS is still having knee pain since Asian games...He is flying to Japan for final league against Unissys ( Alvent)
He needs some rests for about 1 week only before SS Final as well as MAS Open and KOR Open...advise him not to take XD seriously in up coming tournaments

I am really hoping that this pair can win the Gold Medal in London OG 2012. Since this is the only reasonable chance from INA team....unless for now...

Jakarta. After 12 years at the national training camp in Cipayung, East Jakarta, coach Sigit Pamungkas has explained why he felt the need to leave.
Sigit announced last week that he was leaving the camp in order to focus on preparing Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan for the 2012 London Olympics.
He said on Tuesday that he made the decision because he believed in the capacity of the top men’s doubles duo to reprise their Olympic gold-winning performance in 2008, despite their recent poor form.
“I think they are still Indonesia’s best chance of winning gold at the London Olympics because I don’t think we will have any younger pairs ready in time to take on the responsibility,” said the 48-year-old Sigit, who started his coaching career as an assistant to Christian Hadinata, the national team head coach, in 1998.
Markis and Hendra have been playing together since 2004.
Sigit has been their mentor since 2005, helping them to win at the world championships in 2007 and the Beijing Olympics two years ago.
Currently ranked No. 4 in the world, Markis and Hendra withdrew from the national training camp in January to return to their club, Jaya Raya.
Sigit decided to quit the camp to train the pair.
“The discussions with them began in Kuala Lumpur when we played in the Thomas Cup in May,” Sigit said.
“We reached a deal after the Asian Games, so I’ll start training them again at Jaya Raya in January next year.”
However, Sigit promised the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) that he would try to help out at the camp on his days off.
“I will try my best to visit them at least three times a week,” the coach said.
Markis welcomed Sigit’s decision, saying: “We’re surprised, but I know he can help us to get back on top again.”
Despite winning the 2010 Asian Games gold medal in Guangzhou in November, the pair has been struggling on the court for most of the season.
They are currently facing a winless Super Series campaign for the first time in their careers.
Their last hope for a title is the season-ending Super Series Finals in Taiwan in January.
