Three teams tipped as badminton title contenders at China's National Games
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2005-10-06 10:57

Three among 12 teams competing in the badminton women's group at China's Tenth National Games are champion hopefuls, observers said.

Hunan was the champion for the women's team event in 2001. Facing a series of problems including lack of young talents, it is almost impossible to renew its glory.

Having talented players in both singles and doubles at hand, Jiangsu, Liaoning and Guangdong provinces are serious title contenders this year.

"I am not sure who is to win, but Guangdong and Liaoning are highly possible," Chinese top player Gao Ling on the sidelines of the event.

Meanwhile, some experts said host Jiangsu also has the potential to claim the women's team gold.

Guangdong is not only powerful but also lucky as it was pitted in the E bracket against Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi, Fujian and Hubei. As the preliminary results count in the final phase, Guangdong needs only to beat three provinces to be the number one of the E bracket.

Jiangsu, with good players at different ages, called back Dai Yun and Qian Hong from abroad. "Jiangsu has many talented players, they are on the first ladder in China. They shall be successful," Hunan coach Tang Hui said.

World women's number two Zhang Ning, although at the age of 30, together with Du Jing and Yu Yang builds up another hopeful team, Liaoning in north China. Liaoning in the F bracket would need only take limited efforts to win a ticket for the semi-final game, as it beat Chongqing and Zhejiang in the tryout.

A total of 265 players from 16 teams, including top players Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang, gathered here Wednesday for the badminton event of China's Tenth National Games.

The badminton competition is set to be of world class. Star players who will feature in the competition include men's singles world number one Lin Dan of the People's Liberation Army delegation, women's singles world number one Xie Xingfang of Guangdong province, Olympic champion Zhang Ning of Liaoning province.

The National Games, billed as China's mini-Olympics, is a multi-sports event which feature both summer and winter sports.

Badminton: Tough Duel between Star-Studded Hunan, Host Jiangsu

2005-10-10 08:09:57 CRIENGLISH.com

Star-studded Hunan will face powerful host Jiangsu on Monday in women's badminton team final at China's 10th National Games.

Hunan has the chance to realize narrow escape, as the coaches can decide the order of players' entering the arena in team event this year, making it possible for a team to beat a stronger opponent.

Hunan delegation is led by former world top players Gong Zhichao and Gong Ruina, who are much troubled by serious injuries, while Guangdong is featured by world number one Xie Xingfang and Athens Olympic women's doubles Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen. Observers have said that Guangdong is in its golden era while Hunan was relatively fragile.

Hunan entered the final by clever arrangements of athletes' playing orders, beating rivals as planned in advance. If Hunan still had the luck as before, a victory chance is right there.

The most important thing is that Hunan's two Gongs should avoidXie Xingfang in the singles games of the final. Gongs have the possibility to beat younger players of Guangdong, but not 2005 World Championship winner Xie Xingfang.

Another prerequisite for Hunan to win is that Gong Ruina overcomes the burden of injuries. Gong was force to leave the national team to go back to Hunan receiving treatment in June.

Badminton: HK Finishes 4th at National Games

2005-10-10 08:05:00 CRIENGLISH.com

Dark horse China's Hong Kong, who made history by advancing to top four of the men's badminton team competition at the 10th National Games, lost to much better Fujian 3-1 on Sunday in the third-place playoff.

Hong Kong, who were shut out by Guangdong in the semifinals, never gave up in the dual with Fujian, and their first doubles Liao Guohua/Yang Lifeng upset Fujian's out-of-form Hu Zhilan/Zhang Weihong 15-6, 15-3, after their first singles Chen Renjie was beaten by youngster Xie Xin of Fujian 15-9, 15-2.

Then, Chen Hong from Fujian, who lost an important match to rising star Chen Jin from Jiangsu in the semifinals on Saturday, eased through Wu Wei from Hong Kong 15-12, 15-9. Guo Zhendong/Qiu Bohui from Fujian crushed Hong Kong's pair of Lan Kaide/Tan Letian 15-5, 15-0 to seal the victory.

Title-hungry Fujian, aiming high before the event, took home a bronze. And the undauntable Hong Kong team has impressed all the experts and spectators by their great progress.

The final will take place on Monday, with Guangdong hoping to take revenge on hosts Jiangsu. Jiangsu, the hosts of the 10th National Games, upset Guangdong, then hosts of the Ninth National Games, four years ago.

Badminton: Jiangsu Claim First Badminton Title at National Games

2005-10-11 11:00:38 CRIENGLISH.com

Hosts Jiangsu took their first badminton gold, after beating Guangdong 3-2 in the men's team event at the Chinese 10th National Games.

It is the first time for a team to win the event three times consecutively in the Chinese National Games history.
Chen Jin, Jiangsu's ace in the men's singles, was fielded as the first singles again to play Guangdong's Wu Yunyong in the first round. Wu, Chen's teammate in the national badminton team and ranked 118th in the world, was not his counterpart's match for both skill and speed, losing quickly 15-6,15-2 in only 35 minutes.

Chen, 26-ranked in the world, much younger but given more chances to participate in the international events than Wu for the nation, due to the nation's new-star making policy, built the initial lead for the host's defending prospects.

The second round was played between Jiangsu's Cai Yun/Xu Chen and Guangdong's Chen Qiqiu/Fu Haifeng, shuttlers all from the national team.

Cai and Fu, who are even partnered in the national team, had to battle as enemies on the court. Their familiarity with each other made the match more unpredictable.

To a roaring crowd, Cai/Xu stormed over their rivals 15-9 in the first set but the stubborn Chen/Fu seemed to weak up and adjust their tactics in the second with a 12-6 lead. Although hosts' duo managed to have three points in a row, Chen/Fu still took the set 15-11 with powerful attacks.

Cai's right knee injury, which he suffered unluckily while saving a ball in the second set, started to affect Cai's pace and experienced Chen/fu took great advantage of it, racing to a 11-2 lead in the third. Cai, who couldn't hold the line any more, gave up the remaining part with Xu.

Li Yu, another rising star in the Jiangsu team, paid for his tension and impatience in the third round, losing to Guang Dong's Zhu Weilun 15-11, 10-15, and 15-12.

Liu Yong and Sun Jun, the last hope for Jiangsu, don't let the home crowd down by beating their rivals Yu Jinhao/Zhu Lihua 9-15, 15-9, 15-9.

The last appearing Qiu Yanbo secured the top-valued team title for the host with a 15-10, 15-9 win over Zhu Pengxiang.

On Monday afternoon, Hunan also claimed the third consecutive women's badminton team title at the National Games, after beating Guangdong 3-2 in a close match.

nope, LU Yu (or Yv actually) beat PG in the first round, and then lost to chen yu in the second round, chen yu then got to the semi finals and lost 2:1 to Bao CL.;)

XXZ went out in the second round to WU something. ;)

Chen Jing beat XUZ (15:7, 15:2). He is going to meat Lin Dan in semi. What a game, anyone is going to record this? By the way, this is an all out game since they represent different places (gold is important in Chinese National game). Even in the future, Chen Jing would play for the 1st line Chinese national team internationally, LYB may order one to lose if they met in opens.

Wang Chen withdrew the third fight with zhu ling(shanghai) due to injury & zhu ling got the bronze medal.
But after the match wang chen explained that her major reason of withdrawal is feeling very disappointed to the unfair judgement in semi-final with jiang yanjiao.
And she declared that she WON'T go to any competition held in China!

HK's media widely report this incident. I am really amazing to see wang chen being so angry & losing her temper in front of the media.

LYB said he doesn't think there is any unfair happened & he think players shouldn't blame others after losing the match.

we won't know the truth because there is no livecast of this semifinal.

I can't deny that there are many "dark side" in china, however i think sportsmanship is very important to such a big country. 2008 olypmics will be held in beijing, i can't imagine the impact if such "unfair" happened again towards those former chinese players such as Pi hongyan or Yao jie.

what do u guys think abt this?

How come Lin beat Bao so easily in the 2nd game? Who defeated Chen Hong in the SF? Is it Bao or Lin?

Bao defeated Chen Hong in SF, while Lin Dan defeated Chen Jin...
Bao's explanation is that he lost the confidence in the 2nd set, i dunno the details as i didn't see the match. and the media report that Bao cried after losing to Lin again! Bao Bao so poor....:crying:

btw, many players give up/withdrew the less important game to save energy..such as Gao ling almost give up XD in QF in order to save energy in WD, at the end GAO ling/WEI yili beat YANG wei/ZHANG jiewen which we can't believe it! also ZHANG jun/QIAN hong withdrew XD's SF, so that Zhang Jun performs very well in MD.

Also, the "older" players didn't play for 3rd-8th fight after they lost the chance to go further, e.g. Gong ZC didn't play any game after losing in QF, SUN jun/LIU yong didn't play the 3rd fight too..

Go Bayi! :P My coach was from that team way back when.

There's a funny story with the Jiangsu team. If what I hear was correct, they wanted to pull Ge Fei back from retirement because Jiangsu badminton hasn't been really strong in recent years. Sun Jun wouldn't allow it and offered to play instead, which is why he played for the team in this year's national games. I guess they were practically begging him and/or Ge Fei to play. It's good to know all the players in past generations can still compete with the current stars, and it's also quite scary at the same time...

Since there is a big event like the Chinese National Games, where there are team as well as individual badminton events, it is very likely that there is no further need for another individual championships.
