AFAIK, they're basically lower-tier tournaments as opposed to IBF star-ranked tournaments (e.g., World Championship, All England, China/Denmark/Malaysia/US/Indonesia Open, etc.).

Satellite tournaments are 'A grade' IBF events.
A victory in an A grade event is worth 1800 world ranking points.
In Grand Prix events, victories are worth :
2400 points for 1*
3000 points for 2*
3600 points for 3*
4200 points for 4*
4800 points for 5*
5400 points for 6*
6000 points for 7*
Hope this helps... :)

Very unlikely. But Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand do sometimes send its second or even third team to a satelitte tournament. It's an experience for youngsters before they eventually move up the ranks to compete in the 1 to 3* events.
