PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Chew Choon Eng has been roped in as a reserve men’s doubles player for the badminton team to the Manila SEA Games.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will bear the expenses for Choon Eng to go to Manila as a Category B athlete.
The others for the Games under Category B are women’s singles players Wong Mew Choo, M. Sutheaswari, Julia Wong and Norsyaliza Baharum and the women’s doubles pair of Ooi Sock Ai-Mooi Hing Yau.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) have only approved an eight-man and two-woman team for the Games.
The others in the men’s squad are Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Wong Choong Hann, Kuan Beng Hong and the doubles pairs of Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat and Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah.
The top national doubles pair of Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui are the only female players placed under Category A. The participation of athletes under Category A is funded by the OCM.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said that he did not want to take the chance of having a team without a reserve doubles player.
“I only have two pairs and they have to play in the team and individual events. I have more options to play by bringing one more experienced doubles player in case of injuries,” said Kim Hock.
Choon Eng has been partnering Choong Hann since the Singapore Open in June. However, Choon Eng featured in the World Championships in Anaheim in August with Tan Fook and they reached the quarter-finals, losing to eventual champions Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach of the United States.
The national team’s main task in Manila is not just to retain the two individual titles they won in Vietnam two years ago but also to challenge strongly for the men’s and women’s team gold medals.
At the Vietnam Games, Tan Fook-Wan Wah won the men’s doubles title while Mew Choo became the first Malaysian in 26 years to win the women’s singles gold medal.
The coaches going to the Manila Games on OCM’s expenses are Kim Hock, Misbun Sidek, Li Mao and Cheah Soon Kit.
The BAM will foot the bill for sports code expert Yeap Soon Lee and nutritionist Chai Wen Jin.
