The draws are out in www.worldbadminton.net (http://www.worldbadminton.net)
Tough draws for Taufik because he probably has to face Wong Choong Hann in the third round. Next up will probably Lee Chong Wei, the winner between Lin Dan and Peter Gade.
In the other half of the draw, Sony is also facing a tough time. He will have Park Sung Hwan, the winner between Hafiz and Shon Sheung Mo, and probably the winner between Bonsak and Kenneth.
For men's doubles, Candra/Sigit is expected to meet either Fu/Cai or Paaske/Rasmussen (their farewell tournament perhaps?) in the semi-final.
Markis/Hendra should meet Flandy/Eng Hian in the second round (if they beat Thomas Laybourn/Peter Steffensen). Luluk/Alven has two Malaysian pairs to beat: Chew/Wong and Chan/Koo before an expected semi-final showdown with the winner between Markis/Hendra and Eriksen/Lundgaard Hansen.
For women's doubles, not much hope for the Indonesian pairs because Lita/Natalia will face up against the world champion Yang/Zhang as early as in the second round. Jo/Gresya has another tough match against Saralee/Satinee in the first round.
For mixed doubles, Nova/Lilyana is drawn to face the Olympic silver medallist Robertson/Emms in the quarter-final and the Olympic gold medallist Zhang/Gao in the semi-final. Anggun/Yunita is expected to face the new Danish pair of Rasmussen/Andersen (they have to first qualify for the main draw) as early as the first round. If they win, they should face another Danish pair in Eriksen/Schjoldager. Meanwhile, Sudket/Saralee is in for a tough match against the World Championship runner-up Xie/Zhang as early as in the first round.

The draw looks tough for most of the discipline and very competitive indeed. I am going to watch the semi-final and final in the Queen Elizabeth Stadium . Anybody else in HK planning to watch it together?

Personally, I feel the winner of this tournament won't be Taufik. And to an extent, i would feel the same also for the upcoming China Open. My reason is because,
1. As far as i know, Taufik didn't really set any "personal goal" of winning either of this tournament. He has been saying all along ever since his WC title, that his main focus will be on next year's All-England and prepare for the Thomas Cup.
2. it's nearing the end of the year and most likely it's time to wind down
3. Most likely, he will approach this tournament just like last year when he played in the invitation event of Copenhagen Masters. There's really nothing much to "prove" for himself, other than going deeper in the tournament.
On that note, i'll *be surprise* if he wins this tournament. Esp. with his "lack of hunger" attitude showing up again, esp. in the recent Indonesian Open(for whatever reason).
My best "bet" player to win this tournament is LinDan(as he showed to us what he did after the Olympics last year)
My "dark horse" player to win this tournament is Sony DKuncoro

Not so good draw for the INA teams. The only pair that has a chance to go all the way to SF is Candra/Sigit. Bottom group has Luluk/Alven, Falndi/EngHian(i don't know why are they still going) and Markis/Hendra. I only think 1 of them will go all the way to the SF.
I'm interested to see how the MAS pair is progressing. Rexy already put a burden on his top pairs to perform well. Also, i want to keep an eye on the other MAS veteran pair(argh forgot their names, who recently defeated Tony and Halim). We shall see..
My best "bet" pair to win this tourney is Candra/Sigit.
My "dark horse" pair to win is Markis/Hendra. Will this be their coming out party? Will they be able to at least reach the QF stage?? We shall see..

This looks like a very fun and wild field. Yes very interesting!! I would love to see any of these matches. All Heavy Weight contenders participating, hopefully with no major injuries, unlike in World Championships..WOW!!!!! :)
Well, the current WC(Nova/Lilyana) have their work cut out for them. They will have 2 tough tests before going to the Final. If everything goes as planned, they will play Robertson/Emms in QF, WOW!! then if they pass them Gao/Zhang is on their way in the SF, WOW!!. Then if they can pass them, either Sudket/Saralee or Lee/Lee are
about to meet them in the Finals....pheeeew..wow, what a draw!!..
Pressure will be on them, but if they can win this tournament, it'll validate their WC success and will undoubtedly be the "top pair to beat" for next year..:p:)

This will probably be a "warm-up" tourney for China's players. In 2 weeks, when they participate in the China Open, hopefully we'll probably have the same "atmosphere" again like we had in the Sudirman Cup Finals(ie. Taufik vs. LinDan, Nova/Lilyana vs. Gao/Zhang)...hehe..:p:)
On that note, will the Japanese squad send their players to China Open??..Seems like they are skipping these last 2 tourneys..

Its up for grabs really and I wrote just now that Nova/Lilyana were "lucky" to win the WC in August without having to face either Robertson/Emms, Zhang/Gao, Chen/Zhao, or Lee/Lee. They ended up facing Sudket/Saralee and Xie/Zhang. IF they win the matches against Robertson/Emms, followed by Zhang/Gao and then the final against either Sudket/Saralee or Lee/Lee, they have indeed earned the top billing this year. But, I rate their chance at 50-50. They have a good chance against Robertson/Emms (Nathan still not in full form) and Sudket/Saralee. However, they do not really have any advantage against Zhang/Gao (lost twice, won once) and Lee/Lee (lost twice, won once also)

Agreed also. He's as what many ppl said "angin2 an". I believe if he really wants the title (like the coveted All England title), he will go all out and win it. However, Hong Kong and China Open are nothing for him.......
Lee Chong Wei might also be withdrawn if he won the Denmark Open this Sunday (which he has a good chance). Yap Kim Hock had mentioned in the Star that it will be good to reserve the energy of his top players for the SEA GAMES in Manila next mth. That's why they are skipping the China Open and even Chong/Lee is not playing in the HK Open.

They are Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah. They are not in HK Open. Malaysian has 3 young pairs (excluding CCM/KKK) and I fancy two of these pairs: Lin Woon Fui/Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Tan Bin Shen/Ong Soon Hock. Both pairs are just outside the top 10 ranking and have performed consistently well in the past few tournaments. Both pairs are young too....at most 22/23 yo. They are indeed Malaysian's best hopes in the coming 5-8 years.

Well, as for Nova/Lilyana, yah they are a bit "lucky" to avoid playing the pairs you mentioned and win the WC. But there's a saying also, "sometimes luck is all we/one need"...which they got..:)
You're in HK, so you are "lucky" also, as you'll have access to watch it live..hehe..j/k..;):p :)

no i dissagree with you,
taufik defeated lin dan in wc 2005 but taufik felt lin dan was not what he used to be. taufik may be more satisfied to beat lin dan when he is on top form and that chance are in hk open 2005 or china open 2005.
i think taufik's chance is 90 % in HK open :)

This draw is really shocking, in that, almost looks very similar to the WC draw.
Hopefully the Mens singles final will be more intense this time around.
And hopefully Taufiq will play like he did in the WC.
I cant see how he can be beaten if he plays the same way like the WC's.
He looked invincible, with his backhand and forehand able to perform the same strokes.

Hopefully the Mens singles final will be more intense this time around.
And hopefully Taufiq will play like he did in the WC.
I cant see how he can be beaten if he plays the same way like the WC's.
He looked invincible, with his backhand and forehand able to perform the same strokes.
i agree with u 100 % :D

Sure, Taufik could win the HK Open also, why not. But *i'll be surprise* if he does win it, as I've posted my reasons. I don't know how Taufik can be sure if LinDan is "on top form" or not. All i know is Taufik plays his best based on his "mood" and "attitude". So in other word, the only "player" that can beat Taufik is himself.>> Recent proof, the Indonesian Open, no matter what reasons/excuse he gave.
no i dissagree with you,
taufik defeated lin dan in wc 2005 but taufik felt lin dan was not what he used to be. taufik may be more satisfied to beat lin dan when he is on top form and that chance are in hk open 2005 or china open 2005.
i think taufik's chance is 90 % in HK open :)

I have just been told by the mother of a very young kid, with the name of Ng Ka Wai (not related to Ng Wai), is going to play the Korean Shon Seung Mo on tuesday Nov. 1. This must be a joke. Ng Ka Wai is just a kid, albeit with some talents, who can be beaten by at least 100 or more better players in Hong Kong. I have played with this kid a few times. I think they are sending him to the slaughter house.

it's a rare oportunity to meet world class players for 'uknown' player, i think it's ok to get 'slaughtered' by taufik or lindan :)

It is an open tournament. Should we be surprised by the opponents to be met are big guns for unseeded players? Since there is no qualification round for men's single, unseeded players can only pray for their luck before the drawing is made and try their best in thematches if they will meet those veteran players.
Calling that a slaughter house is an overstatement. Things could happen. I would appreciate that chance to play with Shon if I was KW Ng. The good thing for losing the game to better players is to gain the motivation and konw the weak points to improve.

I would consider myself very lucky if I can get my ass kicked by Taufik, Lin or any top 15 players^^
15-0, 15-0 is maybe a bit too exagerated. He may have 2-3 points each round.

If he gets even one point I think his opponent gifts it to him. I have played with this kid. I sometimes still play with him but only doubles. There are a few other kids who are younger and better.

If Im not mistaken I think you are refering to Chong/Lee (MAS) but they wont be participating in this coming HK Open

I see.. this is good strategy, it gives the young guns more exposure on international stage to gain experience. Lee/Chong has always been my favourite pair, but I think they are getting old.

You might be right, since the World Cup is an *Invitation*. I just hope the organizing committee can ask all the players they are inviting as soon as possible, cos if some of the players will not be coming, then they have to find replacements. I know they are putting the $250K prize money as an "extra tempting incentives", so that the event will have all the top world ranked players.
On that note, my gut feeling is Taufik will agree and attend the World Cup. Whether he wins or loses,my feeling is he will not win it this time. I will be surprise though if he decide to attend and then win it.
Hmm, Dan(s4madman), should i give Taufik a call just to ask him whether he's coming to the World Cup (in China) or not, just to make sure??..hehe, j/k.. ;) :p :)
