So now we know who to turn to for pretty badminton players. Maybe ants should show us more of his favourites from his collection so that we could also archive for him. How about another young and upcoming Japanese star, E Hiroshe? :p

Come to think of it, Japan's women's team can be a force to reckon with pretty soon, with these relatively fresh faces (including another ladies pair) added to the likes of Mori and Yonekura! :p

For 'older' photos and badminton history, another Malaysian BFer, Bbn, is our resource person. So from KL, we can find two ardent badminton fans. :)

Anyone has Reiko's profile?

Reiko or you may call her Ray is born in 1983. Believe it or not she was the top ranked junior Singles player in Japan during her high school time. Winning the Japanese Junior singles in 2000. She begin her quest in doubles only in year 2001. She also had a temporary professional stint in Holland which she was ranked 3rd in Singles during that time. Only in the year 2002 she partnered with Kumiko Ogura and Womens Doubles events.

This is Hendrawan, arms folded, at the ABC in City Stadium, JB. I suppose Hendrawan did not want too much publicity then as he was the new women's coach of the Japanese team. He rather let Park Joo Bong do all the talking.

Loh,
hmm, from the pics, the guy *resembles* Hendrawan..But IMO, looking closely again from the side profile and front, i don't think he's Hendrawan..
Hmm, i or anyone else, will try to find a pic of Hendrawan and compare the 2 individuals...
No wonder, i saw few posts mentioning that Hendrawan has moved to Japan to coach..But recently in Indonesian media, they said Hendrawan is still the INA women's coach....I'm confused..  :p

Maybe someone who knows Hendrawan personally can verify? ;)

Although I have seen Hendrawan some years back during one of the Singapore Opens, I knew him then as having quite a good crop of hair, still relatively short, but not balding! :p

In these pics, Hendrawan seems heavier although his height is somewhat similar to the Hendrawan that I knew before. My young friend who accompanied me to the ABC used to be a national player of another country and it was he who pointed out 'Hendrawan' to me. And I have read in this Forum that Hendrawan, together with a few other coaches, have left PBSI. There was no strong objection to reject this as being the truth, ie. that the person in the pic is Hendrawan! :)

boy, it sure is hard to distinguish...only way is for Hendrawan to confirm himself for us..:p
hmm, well, i don't know him personally, but for comparison purpose, i've got some pictures of Hendrawan albeit some from 4-5 yrs. back but have 1 recently from last yr(SC)...True, the receding hair seems to be the biggest resemblance..But the guy wearing the Japanese jacket *could be* Hendrawan with some added weight, thus making him look "chubbier" on the cheek.. ;) :)

Medal hopefuls set sights on Beijing

It's exactly a year before the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and athletes are hard at work preparing for the Games.

We asked five of Japan's likely podium challengers to take a brief rest from their busy schedules to give their thoughts on the Aug. 8-24 Olympics.

Judoka Ryoko Tani is seeking a third-straight gold medal and first as a mother, swimmer Kosuke Kitajima says he wants to win a gold for his coach, table-tennis star Ai Fukuhara has pledged to put in a better performance in her second trip to the Games, while badminton doubles pair Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota say they're ready to make their Olympic dreams a reality.

The Asahi Shimbun

* * *

Kumiko Ogura: I first began thinking about the Olympics when I started playing doubles with Reiko.

We were attending different high schools, but eight years ago when we were both in the first year of senior high school, we were paired off in doubles for the first time at a special all-Japan junior training camp.

It didn't feel like it was our first time together because we were in sync emotionally and there was nothing strange about the pairing. That is what really surprised me.

The following year, people began saying, "You should aim for Beijing," and that's when I began thinking about what it would mean to appear in the Olympics.

Reiko Shiota: Until I was partnered with Kumiko, I wasn't very interested in doubles, but it became more fun because we were beating pairs older than us as well as appearing in international tournaments. When we were deciding what to do after graduating (from senior high school), we talked about trying to end up at the same place. That's how we both ended up with jobs at Sanyo Electric Co.

Ogura: When we failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics, it really hit home how much I wanted to take part in the Games. I was injured at that time and we had to give up on the qualifying for the Olympics midway through. It was especially frustrating because we are a doubles pair.

Since then, we have tried our best to come out on top. This time, we've decided to make it a four-year challenge to make it to Beijing.

Shiota: I don't think we failed to make the Olympics because Ogucchi (Ogura's nickname) was hurt. At that time, I only had a vague sense of what it meant to go to the Olympics.

However, I realized for the first time that I really wanted to appear in the Olympics when we had to bow out in such an inconclusive sort of way.

Four years ago, it was still an unclear dream of mine, but now it is more than just a goal but something I definitely want to accomplish.

Ogura and Shiota: We are now in the process of participating in various qualifying tournaments overseas for the Beijing Olympics. The competition started in May and will continue until next April.

Kumiko Ogura, 24, is originally from Mie Prefecture. Reiko Shiota, 23, is originally from Fukuoka Prefecture. The pair won the bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games.(IHT/Asahi: August 8,2007)

Can someone explain that they both work for Sanyo? Is that mean they are Sanyo employees and not exactly a pro (living off prize winning and endorsement money)? Being from Japan and so pretty, they would get a lot more endorsement money from companies like Yonex which practical own the badminton sport. Anyone has any insight?

I don't think they are really employees for Sanyo. I think mostly Sanyo is the sponsor for the pro league / team which they are playing for.

Omegamiko
08-17-2007, 02:38 PM
From what I've heard, from interviews and such, they are actually employed by Sanyo, and from the workplace is where the doubles pair met. Sanyo additionally sponsors their sports activities because they are able to go pro. And even in Japan, it's pretty well known that internationally, Badminton is unfortunately not a high paying career, even with endorsements and prize money (It's not like Tennis, with million dollar paychecks), so a 9 to 5 job is probably necessary, especially at their tournament win rate, the Chinese seem to be an unstoppable barrier, I doubt they could make enough to survive a Japanese lifestyle. The only places where badminton can really be made into a career is like China, where the government employs you to play and pays for your lifestyle, and places like Malaysia or Indonesia, where you are pretty much elevated to God-hood for mastering the sport.

But they're doing very well this World Championship. I'm pulling for them!

vtdl88
08-17-2007, 03:31 PM
That is sad to hear. Why I say that? Mostly because Yonex is a Japanese company and is THE major sponsor for badminton. We, the consumers, pay a premium for the Yonex brand from rackets, to shuttlecocks, to shoes, to clothing, and you name it. Can't they give a little special preference to one of their best players. Not to mention that they are beautiful and can easily be their models to promote their products. Anyone from Yonex reading this ;)

Omegamiko
08-17-2007, 03:53 PM
That may be true, but that premium is often recycled into the numerous tournaments Yonex sponsors. In fact, Yonex probably sponsors every international tournament that has any affect on one's ranking points, and as you can see from the numerous player endorsements and billboards at the stadiums already, Yonex hardly needs Japanese endorsement, its pretty clear cut to the Japanese that they are indeed the best, and the only brand that can compete in the Japanese eyes is fellow home-grown Gosen.

However large Yonex may seem to be in our eyes, they aren't omnipotent. It takes numerous huge sponsors to sponsor a tennis grand slam winner's prize money. With Yonex often being the sole large sponsor (Proton, BAM, Victor, Kason, SOTX, hardly scratch the surface), they can't possibly support the livelihoods of every professional circuit player along with their own business agendas. Especially if their own Japanese players aren't the no. 1s.

The Comedian and the Badminton Beauty
August 21, 2007

Two rising stars from quite different worlds have been romantically linked.

It was revealed yesterday that handsome comedian Tokui Yoshimi (32, photo top left) is dating top badminton cutie Shiota Reiko (23, photo bottom left).

Tokui is the boke half of the duo Tutorial, who took the comedy world by storm when they won the annual M-1 Grand Prix and ¥10 million in 2006 while still relative unknowns. Together with partner Fukuda Mitsunori (32), he is now a regular face on TV. He is expected to go far not only because of his looks but also his comic ability, and he was runner-up in this year's R-1 Grand Prix for solo comedy acts.

Shiota and doubles partner Ogura Kumiko (24) have been Japan champions for the last three years running, and just last weekend they won the bronze medal at the World Badminton Championships. The pair are known as "OguShio" are are popular as much due to their good looks as their medal-winning ability. Shiota is due to publish a photo book next month, a relative rarity for sports stars.

The badminton pair and the comedy duo met when they were teamed up for a double date on a TV show in February 2006. Though the date was only meant to be for entertainment, it led to one real-life romance after a somewhat drunk Tokui expressed his feelings for Shiota. It's just a shame the word "shuttlecock" doesn't have the same comedy potential in Japanese!

Japan's national championships

The Japanese national championships were also held this weekend. In women's doubles, Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota beat Satoko Suetsuna/Miyuki Maeda 21-17, 17-21, 21-9.
How come the trophies are at different sizes? It appears to me as WS champion and runner-up instead of WD.

Those trophies are considered ok size... you have not seen bigger ones given in tourneys in Japan yet. Usually the trophies are bigger and comes together with a certificate as well.

Oh yeah.. I saw a Tv show like two weeks ago in Japan, where Reiko and Kumiko were invited to perform their smashes and stuff.. A K1 fighter smashed a shuttle at 150kmh, and Ogura Kumiko only smashed it at 160kmh .. They then played 2vs4 against wrestlers, soccer players, golf players, etc.. lol They commented that though they're very famous now in Japan, nobody ever talks to them even if they dress in obvious ways to show that they're Ogu-Shio.. lol

To promote badminton, we definitely need more players like Ogura/Shiota. :)

We like guys with idealism - it lets us less fortunate ones to be born unlike Brad Pitt a sliver of hope.
