From Malaysia newspaper The Star :
Youngsters Bin Shen-Soon Hock crash out in Hong Kong Open first round

HONG KONG: Youngsters Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock’s attempt to break into the world’s top 10 suffered a setback when they crashed out in the first round of the men’s doubles event in the US$250,000 Hong Kong Open at the Elizabeth Stadium here yesterday.

The duo, currently ranked 11th, went down 17-15, 15-12 to China’s Zheng Bo-Sun Junjie.

Danish Open champions Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Wong Choong Hann-Chew Choon Eng will play in the first round today.

In the men’s singles, only four Malaysians were in action yesterday. Choong Hann easily cleared the first round, beating England’s Andrew Smith 15-2, 15-7.

James Chua wasted the chance to set up a second-round meeting with Choong Hann after losing 15-17, 2-15 to unheralded Poompat Sapkulchanart of Thailand.

Two back-up shuttlers – K. Yogendran and Yeoh Kay Bin – also reached the second round. Yogendran defeated Hong Kong’s Hung Yuk Wong 15-7, 15-3 while Kay Bin eliminated Wong Shu Ki, also of Hong Kong, 15-8, 15-11.

In the women’s doubles, Ooi Sock Ai-Mooi Hing Yau and Fong Chew Yen-See Phui Leng went down 3-15, 0-15 to China’s Wei Yili-Zhao Tingting.

The Hong Kong Open, a 6-star event does not have a functional website, let alone one that updates results. This is absolutely pathetic. We all on BCBF are receiving results in dribs and drabs thanks to members who have managed to scrape them up. My God! This is 2005 (almost 2006). Haven't the HKBA heard of the internet. And they are not the only guilty party. The IBF should mandate compulsory internet access for all their sanctioned events. Surely they know this to their benefit and would help immeasurably with the exposure of the game. Damn, I sure hope things improve. Arrghh!!

Now I have vented, I'll get my coat...

Hafiz has gone Dutch plus licking a silver medal in Dannish pastry, its more than enough for a month's work and not bad by any player's standard.

For any world class player, its hard to peak for a lengthy time, take Taufik as an example, unbeatable at Olympics and at the Worlds, but a month later got a duck 15-6, 15-0 from LCW.

Though Taufik is heavily favoured this time again but i doubt he will win. I stick my neck out, I don't think the winner of 2005 HK open is going to be Taufik or Lin Dan.

Actually I don't think he really cared for the Malaysian Open after winning the 2005 Singapore just a week or two earlier. Word has it that he got drunk the night before the match which may be the reason why he performed poorly and was shut out in the second set. Even IF he lost, I think the score would have been more reasonable if he didn't get drunk the night before.

As for LCW's match against him in the 2005 World Championships, I don't know what happened in the first set for Lee Choong Wei. He did so well against Bao Chunlai the day before but lost badly in the first set to Taufik!

Having said all this, it is very hard to win back to back tournaments, Cheng Hong did that in 2003.

Sorry to mess with you again but is it called an upset when Pi, a higher-ranked player, beat Mia, a lower-ranked player? We all know ranking does not really describe the players' ability 100% accurate since Mia won the Olympic silver medal two times in a row. Technically it is not an "upset" since Mia's ranking is below that of Pi's.

Nevertheless, you are right! It is sad to see good players like Mia Audina and Lee Hyun Il exit early in a tournament :crying: .

Lee Hyun-il lost but Shon Seung-mo won beat Sony Dwi Kuncoro, apparently. I think that was Day 3. He has advanced to the round of 16. So have Seo Yoon-hee (over a Scottish woman) and the mixed pair Lee Jae-jin and Lee Hyo-jung (over an Australian pair).

Wiratama, who beat Lee, is the guy who also beat Simon Santoso in the first round. He's having a good tournament.

If LCW (or anyone other than Lin Dan) beat Taufik, it is still considered an upset, even if Taufik is ranked lower. So, ranking does not matter as much as perception of form. Months ago, perhaps Pi beating Mia would be considered an upset. But currently (after seeing Pi's form in the Danish Open), I would consider the reverse an upset.

Anyway, this tournament is officially the worst in 2005 in terms of results dissemination. It is especially shocking given that it is a 6* event in one of the most advanced countries in Asia. Not only does the official website fail in this capacity, even the local media does not seem interested.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of her inconsistency so your point is taken. A lot of us are more surprised to see her lose in the first round than we are to see Pi Hongyan beat her. The inaccuracy of the rankings is obvious, though. To use an extreme example, Gong Ruina, even officially retired, is ranked 98 but who honestly believes there are more than a dozen women in the world (let alone 97) who could beat her right now? Even stepping off a film set in high heels, she could have her way with most of the women in the top 50.

In fact, she did win two silver in a row as she couldn't participate in 2000.
About her defeat against Pi Hongyan, it appears that Hongyan is in top form after winning Denmark Open and Mia isn't at her best, so it isn't so surprising.
Unlucky draw this is...

And this can definately not be called an "upset", as Hongyan is higher ranked than Mia and is the seeded player of the two.

I think right now, Mia is living on her past reputation and achievements. Hence every defeat seems like an upset. In reality she is not in the best of form and has become inconsistent. The main reason though IMO, is that her weight problem has finally caught up with her :D :D :D

Oh and by the way, the last time I checked, I seem to recall young Miss Pi was a pretty good player in her own right, and deserving of her high seeding :D :) Let's not sell her short.

Sometimes its quite ridiculous for a 5-star tournament not to have a result service. A trivia for you, this guy who beat Hunf Il, Johan Wiratama is the younger bro of 1992 Plumpic champion, Allan Budi Kusuma. Don't ask me why the names are so different, well, if Panama hats are made and produced in Mexico and Bombay Duck is actually a fish, I won't argue..
