HONG KONG: Malaysia's Wong Choong Hann will be out for revenge when he takes on Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia today in the men's singles third round of the US$250,000 Hong Kong Open.
Yesterday, the 28-year-old Malaysian scored a convincing 15-2, 15-5 win over Thailand's Poompat Sapkulchanart at the Elizabeth Stadium to set up a meeting with Taufik.
The talented Taufik slogged for a 15-9, 15-10 win over Hong Kong's Chan Yan Kit 15-9, 15-10 in another second round match.
The last time Choong Hann met Taufik was in the third round of the Athens Olympics last year. Then, Taufik emerged as winner.
The winner of the match between Choong Hann and Taufik will most likely play Malaysia's number one Lee Chong Wei, the Danish Open champion, in the last eight.
Yesterday, Chong Wei eliminated John Gordon of New Zealand with a 15-4, 15-7 win in the second round.
Malaysia will also have three other men's singles shuttlers - Yeoh Kay Bin, Kuan Beng Hong and Lee Tsuen Seng - in the third round.
Kay Bin, the world number 43, upset 16th seed Dicky Palyma of Holland 15-11, 17-15 to set up a meeting with China's Bao Chunlai.
Beng Hong faced little resistance in his 15-8, 15-4 win over compatriot K. Yogendran. Beng Hong's next opponent is top seed Lin Dan of China.
In the absence of injured Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Tsuen Seng received a free ride into the third round.
In the men's doubles event, three Malaysian pairs – Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Chew Choon Eng-Khoo Chung Chiat - reached the second round.
Malaysia will have two representatives each in the second round of the women's singles and mixed doubles events.
