You don't need a calibrator if you have a drop weight machine. Anything else, get one. The item is good if you can get it on sale or if you can not get a spring to test yourself. You can also build one with a stronger spring and figure out how much the spring extend with a 20 lb weight. Mount the spring to a fixed object and tension your machine @ 20 lb to see if they extend the same length.

It's not much use for badminton. It is more for tennis, and not even all that good for tennis.

For badminton you should be able to find some fisherman scales that measure up to 50lb in 0.5 lb divisions for the same or less money.

Thanks for the tip, I'm going to buy a Fisherman's Scale tomorrow. :D

I have one, it's OK, mine is off by about 0.5 to 1.0 lbs. It's marked in 5lbs. increments do you have to use your best guess for anything not in 5lbs. increments.

Hmm are they to trust?
Some fischerman scales systems which are better (more precise) that other?

Please calibrate the fisherman sacale before you use as calibrator. As I said it before, get a spring and test the spring constant and use the spring for testing...

I search on the internet.. and i found a 'Salter Super Samson' fisherman scale - it should be one of the few which is allowed to use for fish-records and tournaments ;) I think I'm gonna buy one today..

My fisherman scale read 42lbs today, when I set just 20lbs of tension on my new Eagnas 860 machine. I hope it is the scale that has that wrong measurement, since Eagnas claims their machine are calibrated correctly before delivery.

or maybe you set 20kg on the machine, which would be 44lb....

That sounds about right and I would hope so. If set at 20 and you truly get 44...

Incidentally, my ST-200 has settled down and when it reads 20lbs., it's actually 24lbs. Go figure. I was going to adjust it but it's very consistent now so I just don't mess with it and use my tension calibrator to compensate. :p

I don't know whether this would give an accurate measurement, but here goes. For drop weight machines can't you just place a normal weighing scale (for weighing your body weight) under the arm? If you jack up the level of the scale, the arm would rest horizontally on the scale. There would be no need to purchase a tension meter.

They don't work like that
the bar rotates about an axis
the string is pulled at a fixed distance from the axis
the weight slides along the bar to adjust the tension
the tension is derived from the (weight x distance of weight from axis) / distance of string from axis
and weight is moveable weight + weight of bar

like using a spanner. A long handle means you can apply a lot of force to a nut without having to apply much force to the other end of the spanner.

so your scales would register less than was being applied to the string

no, it is in fact 20lbs not KG that I set on the machine. I have weighted my scale today and it is 4 lbs off~ which means my machine is off approx 20lbs???

Dang! Read the instructions on how to adjust the tension crank and good luck. The instructions are confusing, at least for me. :p

so which scale / calibrator are you using now??? Mine is off by 4 pounds, that is too much for badminton.

And back to the post for the Eagnas calibrator, anyone have experienced with it? It is precies for badminton use??? I need to buy one soon or I will have to live with my 20lbs off machine.

I'm using the Eagnas calibrator. I know mine's only off by 0.5 to 1lb. because I used my digital shipping scale, loaded up exactly 20.0lbs. of weights and then pulled it on my Eagnas calibrator. It was off only a very tiny bit (0.5 to 1lb. conservative).

Each time I string a racket, I calibrate it, just in case.

Yes Sir, I'll do some detailed comparisons as I have a digital shipping scale good to 0.1 lbs. I'll be happy if this scale is accurate to 0.1 lbs. as well, I'm not greedy. :p

So I have calibrated my new fisherman scale and re-calibrate my machine today, the result is the same with the dial set at 23lbs, my scale display no less but 46lbs.

And here is my advice for Eagnas buyer, their machine DOES NOT CALIBRATED PROPERLY BEFORE SHIPPED as claimed in the menu. And I have broken my test racket, 1-pack of BG-65 and 1-pack of BG-80 for this matter.

What is the range of your machine dial in both lbs and kg. What kg does your dial show when it is set at 23lbs?

Hi and omg what a thread this has become  ;)

I have a bit of a problem.. I have calibrated my machine for 13kg..and have just made a racquet! But I think that the 'ping-sound' (when i hit the strings) is not right....normaly I would expect to hear a piiiing-piiiing-piiiing..but i only hear piing-piing-piing..the tone is not either that high (or what you say?)..

Anyone who has some idea of what I might do wrong? :o
