haha both her and Zhang Dan are so funny. They spent a lot of time taking pictures with people that they almost missed their bus back to the hotel at the WC. I told them they better run fast. :p

I think they were new to the whole "be flooded by your fans and crushed to death" thing

Yeah yeah, i like her too:D cHEERS!
Especially VERY fun to watch her 'yelling' at her handsome/huge partner XZB in mixed. Wondering is the typical CongQing girl:)
How do u guys think her way of playing compared to GaoLing or Zhao TT?

I never heard of someone being in a bad mood after winning a match unless they were expecting 21-0, 21-0 victory. :D

Oh well, I have got a nice collection of autographs this time round. So I am happy enough. :D :p

Zhang Yawen is soooo cute (the short hair is great!!). I saw her at the AE this year playing WD with Wei Yili in the semis and finals (against Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen) and the crowd was really behind ZYW and WYL. I think it was partly because they were so vocal and their opponents silent; but it was also because they seemed to be more involved in the game. (BTW, just my opinion, but in the final, Wei Yili made so many mistakes.)

Re XD: have ZYW and XZB won a lot? It seemed to me they were always getting into the semis or finals, but never actually winning, esp if their opponents included Gao Ling on the other side. But if they're seeded world number 1 I guess they must've.

I've had the impression recently ZYW has been quite quiet. I watched something on CCTV where she was being interviewed about some injury she had. From memory, the interviewer also told ZYW she was getting fat (!!) and ZYW answered her in all seriousness, "I don't know why either, I'm working on it." Unbelievable.

yes I think that's correct (altho with the caveat that I don't think there's any singular thing as 'Chinese culture', since I have Chinese friends who would be upset by such a question, and others who wouldn't). It's always seemed to me that many (mainland?) chinese have little problem commenting on weight gain/loss. It wasn't stated in a rude way but rather very matter of fact. But I was still appalled.

Myself came from the north part of CHN. In my region (at least, back then), telling a person who "gain weight" actually means a good thing, just like saying you are cute or something, especially, if from an elder to a young person. In our culture, saying "gain weight" usually means "been through good things / well rested". ;)

Leaving aside ZYW's total and utter cuteness, I'm curious about her status as a badminton player. She seems like the only chinese woman, other than gao ling, who plays both XD and WD on the international circuit. Does this signify she's considered that good? I actually don't know how it works: why is it that some chinese women players play both XD and WD, and some don't? The only other player I can think of who does on occasion is Zhao Tingting and ugh, I'm not a fan.

I think it's a combination of factors that qualifies them to play in both xd and wd. Look at YW/ZJW, they are both great WD players but can you really see them playing mixed? YW seems to lack stamina and ZJW isn't as technical as Gao Ling/Zhao Tingting/ZYW. Same with Du Jing, she doesn't seem to have the technique and probably not the right mindset for the mixed game. Also look at Huang Sui, never a mixed player really. Basically it seems that it would come down to the chinese women being separated as front court and back court players.

yeah, ok, that makes sense. can you give me an example of the technique/mindset you are talking about? I think that's quite interesting.

I guess ZYW is a more of net player then, since her regular partner Wei Yili is best at the back? I like ZYW and all, but she isn't anywhere as good as Gao Ling at the net, yet.....

Gah don't get me started on Zhao Tingting . anyway this is a threat about zhang yawen. :o

Zhang Yawen is good no doubt. I like her enthusiasm on court and how she's so animated when she plays.

However I think crowning her as the best females doubles player is a little over the top. I think GL, ZYW, YW, and HS still have one over her.

Her victory celebration and current CO is very classic by tossing the crowd her racket.

hahaha!

my honest observation is she can blend with different partners, and still win the finals, she can asked her partner to do what she wants to do inside the court. Try to observe her net plays. She's underated player. but, mental and physically, she's one tough lady!:D

i think she's one of the gems of Chinese women's doubles, although of course she's also a very good mixed doubles player. she's been through several partners and has been very versatile, as proven by the diff. titles she won with them. i won't be able to name all of her achievements but what comes to mind now are the ff:

ZYW is really one heck of a fighter and genius!!! she is just full of fighting spirit and always has strong desire to win... it is her quality (both technically and mentally) the brings out the best from whoever partnered with her!!!

I just cannot recall any other doubles player comparable to ZYW who could do that and win big with every and so many partners (7 all together??)!!!

Have to say, she's one versatile lady.

Guess she didn't have the luck of the draw in terms of partners and achievements at the 'prime honours' like Olympics and consistent partners.

But really in terms of achievements in a holistic sense ( both breath and scope of wins) as a womens' doubles player, she probably ranks on par with Ge Fei and Gao Ling. Of course in terms of prestige and domination of the competition during their reign, both Ge Fei and Gao Ling will always outshine her.

- 4 unbeaten years in all international competitions between 2 Olympic titles for Ge Fei and Gu Jun. With a mixed doubles world title somewhere in there for Ge Fei.
- 2 Olympic mixed titles and 6 All-England ladies doubles for Gao Ling, something any player can only dream about.

like yu, they belong to the special class called 'tomboy':D:D

In xd, average to short lady partner can be a plus, harder for the opponent's shots to nail her on plus extra dexterity help her return smashes better:p
Maybe except for Ra, i find tall gals like juhl and Lee Hyo Jung a little bit clumsy at times.

Again, ZYW got the Silver with changed partner.

I'm also wondering, in spite of her great skills, why she seems to have had difficulties in grabbing the Gold in the finals. I thought it was partly due to her weak partners. But I might have to think about it more honestly.

(When I watched their game in the first round beating the #1 seed LYD/LHJ, I thought they were a great team. But they lost to their team mates in the final.)

I think Zhao Yunlei will prove you wrong and put Yu Yang second in place. She will soon prove she is capable of winning more titles than her in both WD and XD. Wait and see her in action during OG 2012

Yu Yang didn't play well and achieve much from XD field but yes her WD is nearly invincible. Zhao Yunlei now has her chance.

Well, winning more titles doesn't mean better. I just feel that LYB doesn't give her opportunities not sure if it's because of her height, and kept pairing her with 2nd tier guys and young WD players. When she partnered with Tian Qing, they were doing quite well and won a few titles.

Nah, Yu Yang is not destined to excel in XD. LYB has already experimented her with several guys, He Hanbin, Zheng Bo which did enjoy some success but not by winning Big Titles. So i think the attention should be focused on Zhao Yunlei instead of Yu Yang since YY has her own category to look after while Yunlei is being busy juggling her fitness and time for both.

Back to Zhang Yawen, I would think Ma Jin is her true successor

It's looks not cause ZYL height but since had success in XD, LYB seems want her more concern in XD than WD. That have been shows if all chinese match happened, ZYL/TQ is more often retired than YY/WXL...
