3 All-Indonesian Finals and 3 confirmed GOLD MEDALS.
The problem for the officials is to "let" who win....

MEN'S SINGLES
Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Simon Santoso
-- if there is team order, I believe the coach would have told Sony to "let" Simon win --> so that this win can be a platform for Simon to really become a world class player and go all the way next year

MEN'S DOUBLES
Luluk Hadiyanto/Alven Yulianto vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan
-- on form, no doubt Luluk/Alven will clinch it! Team order will also let them win because Markis/Hendra already clinched 2 titles this year.

MIXED DOUBLES
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs Anggun Nugroho/Yunita Tetty
-- world champion to win their third title this year! BUT, team order could also let Anggun/Yunita taste their first ever gold medal.

Now...for the more important clashes:
WOMEN'S SINGLES
Wong Meow Choo vs Adrianti Firdasari
-- I am rooting for Firda to win! A SEA Games gold will boost the entire women's singles department. Hendrawan also deserves something for his coaching in the past 1 year!

WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Jo Novita/Greysia Polii vs Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui
-- as I mentioned in other thread, Wong/Chin has the tendency to falter in the final. Jo/Greysia has improved a lot these 2 mths and they have beaten the top seed Saralee/Sathinee. They and Atik Jauhari deserve a fitting end to the year.

I Agree with you. My prediction are same with u but i think Sony will win because Sony has more experience and sometimes Simon is not constant, If in good form he can beat the top players, and i think he has stage fright. (ayo Son kamu bisa)

For Luluk/Alven i know them very well. Now is the time to them win the Gold for Indo. I think Luluk can be more confidence now because the opponent are not strong enough. Maybe Kido/Jangkis can be the dark horse. (Mas Luluk nanti di Cipayung aku traktir klo menang)

Nova/Butet i think can win because they have more exp than anggun/yunita. the 1st indo pair can get the gold on the final. (Ayo mas Kidengg)

Adriyanti Firdasari in the top form now but wong is the good player. the chance to win is 50-50. Perhaps Indo can beat Malaysia. :)

Jo/Bogel In the top form now. kak Atik maybe can happy if they can beat the msian pair. Last meeting Jo/bogel lost to msian pair (If i'm not wrong) Perhaps they can revenge. Ayooo Bogellllll

On an side note...hmm...why are Hendra Setiawan called "Jangkis" and Greysia Polii called "Bogel"? This is the first time I heard these nicknames. Just curious who are the Indonesian chinese among these batch of young players. I am pretty sure that Butet, Hendra, Greysia, Yunita, and Firda are. For the generation above them, I suspect Alven and Jo (could be her chinese surname) Novita are. I couldn't tell because the chinese papers are not reporting their chinese names. For the veterans still playing now, only Candra (Chen Jialiang) and Eng Hian (Xu Yongxian) have "official" chinese names.

Seems u are pretty close to the Cipayung players and officials ah? I saw most of them while they were at the HK Open, training on the multi-purpose halls in between matches, eg: Simon, Candra, Ko Herry, Sony, Anggun, and Yunita

Also chatted with Minarti Timur and an Indonesian official (forget his name). Bumped into Yunita Tetty as well after she has finished her quarter-final match against Lee/Lee, but, didnt chat with her. Also saw Butet with her video-camera during the match between Jo/Greysia and Emms/Kellogg. Saw one other women double player which I didn't recognize...could be either Lita or Nathalia.

Hmm....if I am around in HK next November, perhaps I will volunteer myself as a liason officer during the HK Open and hope to know these players more!

you *should* badMania, when you have the chance.. :)
but since you are living in HK and they hold HK Open practically every year, you can see & meet the players often, if they decide to come...Us folkz living here in the states, bleh, won't have many chances to see many of the international pro players playing in our backyard.. :p :(

I might not be around in HK next November because there's a chance that I will have to go to the States for several months from end 2006 till early 2007. If they hold the HK Open as originally scheduled at the end of July, I will definitely be around!

It's hard to know some "North Sulawesi" players (Liliana Natsir, Greysia Polii, Nathalia Poluakan also Heny Budiman, Lily Tampi, Deyana Lomban & Flandy Limpele in men) are native Indonesian or Chinese Indonesian, they are looked similar. For those name I'm sure just Poluakan is Chinese Indonesian and Flandy & Deyana are native Indonesian. Lita Nurlita is mixed Chinese & Sundanese.

Simon Santoso, Jo Novita, Yunita Tetty, Hendra Setiawan, Alven Yulianto are Chinese Indonesian.

All 3 players (Firda, Maria & Fransisca) are native Indonesian, not sure with Wiwis Meyliana & Rosaria Pungkasari in Pelatnas.

Hmm...never expected Simon Santoso to be a Chinese...he doesn't look like a Chinese to me  I am actually pretty convinced that he is not. Well, at least the other ones are pretty obvious. Currently, their chinese names are direct translations from their Indo names.

On the other hand, Firda does look like a Chinese. Similarly, for Butet and Greysia.

Simon is chinese. He is from Tegal. Greysia is half chinese half indo. She is from manado. Maybe for all the women's singles players are not chinese(not really close with them). Butet is chinese. Hendra setiawan is chinese. Kido is not chinese. Lita and nathalia also not chinese. Jo Novita is chinese.:)

Indonesia had a chance to sweep all golds in the individual events. At least a consolation after losing out in for both men and womens and team events.
No body could expect this kind of results.. even me. Only 2 msians in the finals and suprisingly in womens event.

Off the topic:
Well, I was there in January, in Phillie and NY. Suprisingly, Phillie has a pretty large population of Indos (both students and working adults). Some even told me they are working in factories

Another easy win for the world champion. I actually prefer it if they face Sudket/Saralee in the final. The trend is all the opponents they face in this year's final are not considered world class yet! The opponents have done the hard work for them in eliminating the supposedly better pairs.

When they do meet the world class pairs in the quarter-final or semi-final, they tend to loss (eg: Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms; Chen Qiqiu or Zheng Bo/Zhao Tingting; Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung). I hope Nova/Butet can at least show more consistency by beating these few pairs next year. The first test will be the All-England!

sorry folkz, this is getting really off topic... :p :p , but last comment from me on this silly issue:
Sure, his family name, Santoso, "doesn't look like chinese" if you are referring to Lin or Chen or Bao etc. However, he has a Chinese name. My guess is, it's written as Santoso because it is an Indonesian-Chinese name and most likely for his status/passport purpose. Thus, i'm quite sure Simon Santoso is of Chinese heritage, just by his name and looking at his pics.

Let's hope PBSI sends her to more big star tournaments. Then she can realize a top 20 ranking equivalent to WMC/Salakjit/Li Li combo.

Polii/Novita too, I'm impressed with the way they fought Wong/Chin. MAS pair had better technique, skills and deception, but Indon pair were damn stubborn.

Even Wong/Chin said they were quite rattled at the end of 3rd game, not able to finish off the one point from 14-8 to 14-13 when Indon clear went out. Chin even complained about stiff arm with so much smashing.

I 100% agree with you..
But..as usual they have a classical problems..money!!
No sponsorship..no fund!!
That's why Rudy Hartono said that PBSI will send their player only at least he/she/they can reach semifinals..i'm not 100% agree with that..

There must be investment to achieve a result. Not too long ago (after Sylvia Ng era, about same era as your great Verawati) our BAM was of the same opinion as PBSI now, and the girls were confined to local tourneys. I'm surprised with Rudy Hartono's comments, these days skills alone don't win tournament, unlike in his playing days. The Chinese had reinvented the game with unlimited resources and factory-like training methods.

How do you guarantee that someone will reach semis if you don't blood them in tournaments? PBSI and BAM can only teach on http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon12.gifskills, but not on match temperament. Only investing in tournaments can do that.

Take Wong/Chin, for eg. They have not won a final until today. Now that they have, they'll become better players in 2006. And when players become better, they will automatically attract sponsorship. And PBSI stand to reap rewards, but they must invest first.

I'm really sure..our players still have good tehniques but they're less temperament on tournament like you said..:o

...for getting 4 out of 5 individual event golds....i know some of the other top players in the world didn't participate in this event, but i'll take the results anyday, even just 3 golds is very good!!..:) ..after a bit of disappointing results in the team event, that's a very good ending and finish and hopefully all the players go home with a renewed confidence and hunger for more next year..i have some ramblings from the Finals:

-NW/LN pair, well, not much competition i guess for them in this SEA Games, as they are only able to compete in the individual events. The Final was almost like a sparring session, beating AN/YT in straight sets..
-Sony, well, he was able to retain his SEA Games MS title. But good effort by Simon in reaching the Finals, albeit WCH and LCW were probably not in form. Surprise Sony didn't have to play other top players in the Finals(LCW, MHH, BP).
-MK/HS pair, good job also. Redeeming themselves after their disappointing show in the Team event's Final. LH/AY, well, after being a surprise last year, this year has been a struggle for them. Perhaps it's time to shake things up for them. Maybe a *temporary* switch in partnership with either MK/HS?? just to see..
-GP/JN pair learned another good lesson in the Finals, just like they did against other pairs they've lost to, but a very good effort nonetheless...They're still quite young, so they should be able to continue to build on their experience next year..Congrats to the MAS WD pair for winning their match..Should be more meetings for both pairs in the future..:)
-And last, Adrianti, well, what can i say...She has been a surprise this 2nd half of the year, winning and being in contention in most of the tourneys she attended..

Overall, without the presence of Taufik and esp. Candra/Sigit(in the team Finals) to "bail" them out, the rest of the team did well. Lesson learned from this week tourney : the younger pairs/players still need to be send and compete in more international, of higher stars, tourneys for exposure to build up their confidence and mental aspect of the game. IMO, win or lose in those tourneys, that is/should be PBSI's goal for next year.

Oh last, don't want to forget, but a very nice job for Sandy for doing all those typing and scoring update!..:)

You guys know badminton players very well. You must play very well, too. I need your help. I have been posting this question everywhere but I haven't gotten any replies yet. I need an answer asap. I hope you can help.

What score should be recorded on the official score book for games won by default? Is there any official rule on this? If yes, where can I find it?

Thanks again.

Hi bird,

In normal open tournaments, the loser always get eliminated. If someone withdraws, the opponent gets a walkover. No score needed. Just add w/o on the record for the winning player/s.

However, in group matches, where number of sets and points per set may be required for countback, the default score is the duck (15-0, 15-0). Remember, this is only needed for group matches where the loser is not eliminated immediately, like in Thomas/Uber/Sudirman Cups.

I am also happy that we can take 4 out of the 5 golds on offer today. No doubt losing the men's team event is disappointing, because we know we can win. Too bad, Sony and Markis/Hendra were both off form that day.

I agree too that the best result of this SEA Games is the women's singles gold. I predicted before the games that Firda will at most enter the semi-final, yet, she surprised everyone and beat Xing Aiying, Salakjit Ponsana, and Wong Meow Choo consecutively. Earlier, she also beat Li Li. So, for the entire games, her record is 6-0. Hendrawan's work definitely paid off. All those cancellations must have worked and the gals definitely improve a lot this year.

What I would like to see next year is for them to be sent to 3-4* tournaments like Chinese Taipei, Thailand, ABC, Phillipines, and Malaysia Opens; the 5-6* home and neighboring opens (Singapore and Indonesia Opens). With at least Round 1/16 or Quarter-Final placing in most of these tournaments, I am sure some of them will go up to at least top 20.

Today's women's doubles was definitely the best match and oh boy..it was a close one at the end. I thought Wong/Chin will have taken the match at 12-4, but, Jo/Greysia showed their never-to-die spirit and fought all the way till the end. Atik Jauhari should be a happy man too despite the eventual loss.

Jo/Greysia have certainly established their position as one of the top 4 pairs in South East Asia, alongside Wong/Chin, Saralee/Sathinee, and Jiang/Li. They should have no problems breaking into the top 10-15, with a current ranking position of 22 at the moment. To be as competitive as the top 4 pairs will be difficult to achieve, but, I expect them to record more wins against the other top 10 pairs and some upset wins against the Chinese and Korean pairs. They have the potential!

As for men's doubles...the 2 pairs we sent here are more or less world class standards (esp Luluk/Alven). Luluk/Alven isn't young anymore and next year is a crucial year for them. They need to really clinch the major titles like All England and WC. Only by doing that then they can be considered a real world class pair. If by end of next year, they still couldnt perform, a split is necessary!

As for Markis/Hendra, I strongly disagree with breaking them up. They are still 21 and I am certainly happy with their achievement this year. The key is to maintain the consistency. They certainly have the attacking edge, what they need is to play smartly and not to attack mindlessly. They have beaten most of the top 10 pair (except maybe for Fu/Cai and Eriksen/Hansen) this year and they will definitely be a world class pair in 1-2 years time. A couple of 5-6* titles will be required of them.

Here are some ramblings from me, if you don't mind badMania...
Yes, while i agree that probably now is too early and not the right time to "break-up" either of them, i would say splitting them up for a *temporary* period is not bad either, just to see if they can work with another partner. Now, i'm not trying to say that Luluk/Alven are not going to work, but after going *the whole year* without even 1 title in their pocket, if i'm not mistaken, Luluk/Alven def. have gone the opposite direction from last year's success. One whole year without 1 single title, yet they are "supposedly" going to replace Candra/Sigit..?!?!..But OTOH maybe i might be wrong also, maybe next year Markis/Hendra will struggle and the opposite could happen with Luluk/Alven...hmmmm, we shall see.. :p

Ok...off the topic of badminton.

Ooh...are u one of the guys in Angie forum??? I used to go to her forum during some of the tournaments from 2002-2004. Unfortunately, Angie was injured last year, and have not been able to play for the past 1 year. It is frustrating for tennis fans.

I still remembered the highs during her junior years capturing the Wimbledon, French Open and Aussie Open titles in singles and doubles. Then, also some memorable tournaments like the Wismilak in Bali, the one in Pattaya, Asian Games 2002, and some 2003 tournaments. Angie is definitely one of Indonesia's youth sensation and she even broke into the top 60 or 70 before succumbing to injuries :crying: :crying: :crying:

Well, the women tennis team have been doing well in the SEA Games, thanks to Wynne and Romana. Wynne should capture her third gold and perhaps fourth one with Suwandi in the mixed. But the mixed final is a little tough esp with the presence of the American import in the Phi Team.

I agree with your opinion, watch on some unforced error on SEA Gamesmatch, the "weak" player on both pair are Luluk & Markis Kidho.

PBSI's coach maybe knew it more, Markis & Hendra same age and same club although Hendra paired with Joko Riyadi and Markis paired with Ryan Sukmawan in Junior.
Luluk still couldn't change his temperament when critical points and made silly errors. Alvent is the patience player who can manage Luluk's temper.

Alvent & Hendra have 5 years different old, but Jo Novita & Greysia Polii also had it, I thaught still suitable to be paired.

Hmm, IMO from watching pro players and playing myself, i think the partnership of any doubles pair(MD, WD, XD) should involve different style player(s), in order for it to work "efficiently". Because doubles is a TEAM event, technically. In other words, usually one partner should be doing the "dirty" work in the back while the other partner should be willing to be the "set up person", playing, controlling the net to set up for his/her partner. Of course temperament, mental, communication and in a way how much self confidence the partners has, are important factors as well..
Regarding the Indo MD pair, Luluk/Alven, after watching some of their games, i just think it's more of their self-confidence and mental approach that has to do with their struggles. For example in the recent WC, i was watching the match between Tony/Howard and saw how both Luluk/Alven for some reason tend to just be passive and defensive, which IMO is a sign of their lack of self-confidence or to a certain extent their mental. Then of course, after committing many self-errors, their mental game and subsequently their emotional game falls apart. That's what i heard also from a few of their teammates while watching their match. About Markis/Hendra, i personally havent' watch them play much, so i can't really comment. Regarding age, IMO, i don't think it has any much effects in doubles. Of course, it's not a bad idea to keep the partners' ages quite close(1-2 yrs.).
Hopefully, if PBSI, decides to keep the pairs as they are, Luluk/Alven can overcome their struggles next year and learn from their "disappointments" this year..Pairing up Alven/Hendra is not bad idea, but what's going to happen to Markis/Luluk?? Are they going to be paired up as partner?? If so, boy, with what Sandy has wrote, that won't look too pleasant.. :p

The performance of the players is really erratic. Mental aspec of their game is still raw. Its really dissapointing at times.

I was fortunate to have been able to watch the individual event finals live. Just like most of the people here, I was rooting for Luluk & Alven to win the gold.

I wonder if it's normal for these 2 to 'fall apart' under pressure. Most of the people who watched it in the arena noticed that they seem to be at each others' nerves. When I watched the WC on tv, I noticed the same thing. I guess Sigit & Candra has the edge in terms of the mental aspect of the game.

I hope they work on this, since they already possess skill and athletic ability.

Indonesia had a chance to sweep all golds in the individual events. At least a consolation after losing out in for both men and womens and team events.
No body could expect this kind of results.. even me. Only 2 msians in the finals and suprisingly in womens event.

Yes, one can never be sure. You may win in the Team event, beating the same opponent whom you eventually lost in the Individual event. Just to show that these players are more or less of the same standard and it boils down to the form of the day for them! But your idol and friend, Taufik, did not play in the Individual! Who knows what could have happened if he did ;) ?

Not to be outdone, Ants and I got into the final act of using our cameras on others mostly during the closing ceremonies, as well as on ourselves.

Here are a few pics mainly on the victorious Thai Women Team and the most notable was the one taken with Thai Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, an inspiring gold-medal team member who was so happy with the Thai win which came after 20 years.

Ants was all smiles because he had celebrated the Malaysian Men Team victory earlier. Wong Choon Hann was the ace in Malaysia's bag as third singles (in place of the younger Kuan Beng Hong) and he completely shocked and demoralized the less experienced Simon Santoso in the decider. All hell broke loose after that! :D
