I thought I read in the "Laws of Badminton" that it is illegal to block a downward shot at the net (with the exception of protecting ones own face.) But I cannot find even the word "face" in the "Laws of Badminton" on the top n sites spewed out by Google.

Was there never such a rule or was there a change? Many thanks in advance.

Dear D. Yuan,
If you go to site bamalta.cjb.net and browse on the laws of badminton you can find the faults in badminton and the rule you are talking about is 13.4
I think there was no rule which mentioned the face cos I don't think anyone is going to put his face on top of the net :) while there is a shuttle near the net and the opponent is comming to Smash it.

Hi Yuan,

There used to be a rule that made it illegal to block a downwards
shot as you say, but that rule has been changed.
Now it is only a fault if you obstruct you opponent in such a way
that he can not execute the shot properly.

Yes, provided that you don't disturb your opponent's follow.through. As long as he hits the shuttle on his side of the net, he is allowed to follow through over to your side.
